I honestly had forgotten how crazy this video was. 😂 This song got us HARD on the dance floor though. Thanks so much for reacting to this. I absolutely adore him. I recommend 'When the Going gets Tough'. It was a very popular track! Love you guys!
Thanks, guys, for doing my request! I got Star Wars vibes out of this. For a slower version of Billy, try "Suddenly." For another that's a bit faster, try "There'll Be Sad Songs." I really like Lover Boy. Patreon Movie Suggestion: The Dark Crystal.
Yes to Dark Crystal!! I was 12 when Lover Boy came out. The female lead in the video always gave me Kira vibes. Whenever I hear the song, I think of my beloved Dark Crystal.
CONGRATULATIONS JAY & AMBER!! YOU HAVE HIT VIDEO REACTION #2000!!!!🥳🎉🥳🎉🥳🎉 It has been a true joy to follow you for the last two years, and I look forward to the next 2000 songs! (Hopefully there'll be some Joe Satriani in there...) And what a great tune to mark the milestone! Banger song, crazy 80s video! Thank you RSR for making US smile!
I remembered this song but totally did NOT remember how crazy the video was! I think the thing is, we were so used to bizarre videos back in the '80s that we didn't even blink at something like this but to see it in its own years later, it jumps out as being totally insane. Someone must've thought that having Billy perform in the Mos Eisley cantina from Star Wars was a brilliant idea and this was the result. Judging by the amount of detail on all the creature make ups here, it looks like they dropped sick money into making it happen too! Anyway, thanks for the great reaction guys!
It's been a dog's breakfast since I've heard this song much less Billy Ocean. I mostly remember the bass line. The video is a vague memory. But he really belts it out here.
This is from Billy's Oceans 1984 album, Suddenly. It made it to Number Two on the Billboard Hot 100 and went double Platinum. A pop/rock/electronic hit, Billy's beautiful vocals are so recognizable and the instruments are addictive with a great melody. Fab song. Super reaction. Buckets of Maple Syrup love from Canada ❤️ ❤️ 🇨🇦🇨🇦
Such an awesome song and artist!! I know that Billy Ocean is primarily R&B/Soul, but I heard a touch of New Wave in there with the synthesizers. Also the shots of the shore at the beginning and end of the video were great, awesome camera work.
This song is SO great - I've never really liked the video for it. Just really distracts from the song. But very glad you've finally reacted to it - it's one of my top fave Billy songs. But you MUST do the official video for When The Going Gets Tough The Tough Get Going - from Jewel of the Nile. It has Michael Douglas, Danny Devito, and Kathleen Turner as his backup singers and dancers. Really funny - and it's a GREAT song. And his other ballad you have to do is Love is Forever. Incredibly sweet - you'll both love it :)
Love this song by Billy Ocean. He also had a lot of great ballads you haven't gotten to yet. Among them are There'll Be Sad Songs, Suddenly, and Love Is Forever.
"RedLight Spells Danger", "Here's To You", "I Sleep Much Better In Someone Else's Bed", "The Colour Of Love", "Mystery Lady", "Tear Down These Walls, are awesome by Billy Ocean
You have to react to Billy Ocean's video " When the Going Gets Tough, The Going Gets Going, featuring Micheal Douglas, Kathleen Turner and Danny DeVito. From the movie " The Jewel of the Nile " which should be the next movie 🎬 you should react to. And other movie you should react to is " Romancing in the Stone" starting Micheal Douglas, Kathleen Turner and Danny DeVito.
Had forgotten that beginning scene from the video. This whole video is a trip. I had forgotten, lol. Love the tension Billy builds before the chorus. Lookin' a little like Wilson Pickett. Anyway, ... Thanks! Great reaction.
I used to wait by the radio with my fresh cassette ready to go to record this song, hoping to catch it without a DJ talking over it. One of my faves!!!
Awe, memories of trying to catch your favorite songs off the radio with a cassette player. Then your brother walks into the room and drops his change on the dresser.
Greetings and salutations, Amber and Jay! Love this song. Love Billy Ocean. That smooth voice yet powerful. For some reason, the intro always reminded me of “Self Control” by Laura Brannigan. Billy Ocean was one of many R&B artists back in the day who were the masters when it came to romance. Something which has been lacking in pop music for a long time. The last artist I remember who did it was Brian McKnight. It’s become a lost art. But back in the 1980s we had Billy, Luther Vandross, James Ingram, Peabo Bryson, Barry White, etc. I know one song from 1988 that you both will LOVE. “Nite and Day” by Al B. Sure. That song was THE jam back in the day and I guarantee you, Amber and Jay, you’re both going to be pleasantly surprised.
Jay & Amber, for 50's music, you’ll love "In the Still of the Night by The Five Satins 1956. The song was number one for many years in the 70s on a big city oldies station. I have their top 500 songs list from 1977 and 1979 that show it.
I wore out a walkman rewinding this cassette so many times. A walkman was basically an old school mp3 player for you youngsters out there. Also, 80’s video’s didn’t always make a lot of sense, even to those of us growing up then.
AWESOME! I've been waiting for someone to react to this video! Great song! Imaginative visuals! Great memories from 1985! My favorite Billy Ocean song and video!
Thank you so much for reacting to one of the coolest songs and videos sung by one of the coolest musical artists of the 1980's. "Loverboy" was very close to being Billy Ocean's second consecutive number one song. It hit number two on the Billboard Top 100 Pop Charts on February 23, 1985 and stayed there for one week. It got knocked out of the number two spot by REO Speedwagon's "Can't Fight This Feeling". The video is a little cheesy but fun and it's a reflection of the times when it was released. Of course, "Star Wars" would be the greatest influence but so would the muppets of Jim Henson. By that time Henson had already released "The Dark Crystal" (a movie you guys would probably enjoy) and that movie probably had a huge influence on the video as well. Keep up the good work!!
Loverboy and Lover Girl by Teena Marie were popular around the same time, and often in the discos, they would play one after the other. Both sooooo good!
You have to understand how important videos were to 80s kids. Friends would literally say " ya wanna come over and watch MTV". They had to be like movies, regardless of how some of them have aged badly. Lol. Nowadays, music is so unappreciated for the simple fact that you don't have to pay for it. There's no skin in the game. The internet's been a blessing for new artists having an easier platform to become known, but a curse for overall album sales. We'll likely never see diamond album sales certifications again, we rarely see platinum lol. Back in these days, everyone had a working knowledge of music, and could talk music extensively, even if music wasn't their passion. Nowadays, I rarely find anyone I can talk basic music with, much less the music knowledge level I have. Top 40 nowadays is more a fashion show than it is music- based. The music is the soundtrack to the show. "Loverboy" is the dead opposite - the show is terrible, but the song is perfect
Ok, the 80's was a time recording artists started to use the medium of video to get their music out to the public. If people liked the video, chances are the public would buy the music. PHIL COLLINS did a parody of this process in his video "BILLY DON"T LOSE MY NUMBER". Now that you have been exposed to several 80's music videos, you might recognize some of them and find the humor in Phil Collins' video. Michael Jackson's music video for "Thriller" changed the game as his video played like a mini-movie and many artists have tried to do the same. That is a whole other conversation. Back to Billy Ocean. Now that you have watched "Romancing the Stone" give Billy Ocean's "When the Going Gets Tough" a listen. It is on the "Jewel of the Nile" soundtrack, which stars the actors from "Romancing the Stone".
I have never seen the video for this song. Holy smokes, what a trip. I wonder what the context or pitch was for this... Always loved this song, though. Probably my favorite of his. It's totally fun to play on guitar, too-- the groove is so catchy.
Another Billy Ocean suggestion I have: "Suddenly". It's a ballad but it's beautiful. This is also my first time watching this music video for this song. It did give me "Star Wars" vibe from the Cantina in Mos Eisley. However, it also gives me Jim Henson vibes. Like the main girl with the pink hair looks like a Gelfling from "The Dark Crystal". It's actually quite fitting for that time because "The Dark Crystal", "Labyrinth", "Legend", "The Neverending Story" and "E.T." were really popular so that's the feel I get from this video. 😎👍
Great song! Totally off topic but I cant find a single reaction for Mike and the Mechanics “Taken In” official video…maybe give it a look? Same genre and great song
Your reactions are VERY understandable. Even back in the '80's everyone was kinda perplexed by the "Star Wars" vibes this video emoted. If you haven't already done so, check out the following '80's songs: "That Was Yesterday" by Foreigner, "99 Luft Balloons" by Nena and "She Bop" by Cyndi Lauper. If you're interested, I also have a long list of 1980's Hits.
It came out only a few years after the Dark Crystal so I think they were going for that vibe , Plus the video directors back then and cocaine is a hell of a drug :) .
Try some Club classics: Armand Van Helden - You Don't Know Me (USA 1999) Jay Dee - Plastic Dreams (Germany 1993) Junior Senior - Move Your Feet (Danmark 2002) Moloko - Sing It Back (Germany 1999) Mylo Vs Miami Sound Machine - Doctor Pressure (UK 2004) Modjo - Lady (France 2000) Eddie Amador - House Music (USA 1998)
One of my all time fave ones of Billy's, great down to earth humble guy. 😎👌🎶 Red light spells danger & Tear Down These Walls are both great ones too. you think that's weird, there's a 80s band called Blancmange now they had weird MV like the songs called Lose your Love & what's your problem, now they weird ones lol. But my fave of Blancmange's songs is called Living on the ceiling. 😎👌
You need to listen to "When the Going Get's Tough" by Billy from the movie Jewel Of The Nile. It's the sequel to Romancing The Stone that you've already watched. Then you can catch the film on Film Friday.
Now you should react to a song by the group Loverboy, if you haven’t already. Can’t think of a song right now, though I was a fan in the 80s and saw them in concert a couple times. Also, you wanna see another goofy video, you should watch the Official Video of Ghostbusters by Ray Parker Jr.
I just subscribed! I love the myriad of different music you have, so much of it takes me back to a time that I miss and love (late 60s-mid 90s. Please consider doing a video of The Cure (Fascination Street) or The Who (Behind Blue Eyes). Thanks so much and keep having fun :)
Loved this song, don't remember the video, so thanks for showing it. Reminded me of the movie "Labyrinth," which if you haven't seen/reacted to, you should on your other channel. Starring David Bowie!
This video always struck me as odd, even for a wannabe Star Wars ripoff. However, the song is good. A couple others songs of his that you still need to do are: "There'll Be Sad Songs," a slow song, and "When The Going Gets Rough," a more aggressive song from the film "Jewel of the Nile."
Not a fan of either the song or the vid. Nothing beats Caribbean Queen. Amber looks puzzled. If you want a good track, check out There’ll be Sad Songs. It’s a ballad of course and 180 degrees from this, but no one does ballads like Billy Ocean.
This video was crazy lol, but a great song. Also, Loverboy (the band) who was popular at the time said they were going to make a song called "Billy Ocean" hahaha
There is another version of this music video without the starwars like story in the background. Basically you just see Billy Ocean singing in this exact outfit.
So the video us ripping off some popular sci fi movies at the time, Star Wars cantina scene, The Dark Crystal looks like that female alien... The 80s were just a weird time 😂
Billy Ocean is underrated. Kind of like Jon Secada is as well. Both are from the same time period basically and are amazing singers that don't get the credit they deserve. Try some Secada next! Just Another Day.....Angel.....If You Go are all great!
Please do Billy Ocean when the going gets tough the tough get going.the offical video has Micheal Douglas, Kathleen turner and Danny de Vito as his backing singers.the song was used in the movie jewel of the Nile sequel to romancing the stone.
Would have to agree the video doesn't match the song, but back during the times, dinosaurs and Star Wars was real big. Billy liked to do theatrical videos. Also have to remember. MTV was new and you had to have a catchy video to sell records. Billy Ocean was awesome
Alien love in the MTV days of the 80's! I don't remember my reaction to this song when I first saw it on MTV, but honestly, I think most of these video creators were just trying to outdo each other. Watching it now, it looks quite hilarious!
I'm so glad you got to this one. My favorite Billy Ocean track. It was one of my suggestions (but, I'm not taking the credit ). It's a shame it has such a horrific video! I'm sure you'd appreciate the song even more without the video.
At and around that time MTV had gotten really weird with their videos. Most of us really liked seeing the band perform with some interesting play about the song but it got to the point where the MTV directors were creating things that had nothing to do with the song itself. Pat Benatar and her husband were really disgusted with the video made for "Running with the Shadows". MTV producers started making their way into Hollywood and you can tell by the jerky spastic 1/2 second clips they introduced to movies, so glad they were thing out of the movie business.
I love this song, reminds me of my night clubbing days lol I'd forgotten how awful the video was though, I'm with you Amber it doesn't go with the song 😂
