Very fast Upwind Foiling | Watch till the end!

One of the more difficult things when sailing the Nacra 17 is upwind foiling. As if foiling alone isn't difficult enough... Not only that it is difficult it is also very exhausting. The tricky bit about upwind foiling, well one of the things, is to actually make way to windward. Not just speeding around. We try to achieve this by heeling over to windward. The angled leeward daggerboard helps to reduce slipping sideways. Also you have some windward daggerboard in the water following the same purpose. If you are just foiling leveled or heeled over to leeward like on a normal upwind only the tips of the foils could prevent drift.

Geez that's seriously fast upwind!! Did you guys switched from MkI to MkII? Where did you get the helmets btw? I'm switching to MkII and seems like the helmet is quite mandatory^^ Cheers from New Zealand Kia Kaha

We switched form Mk1 to Mk2 in 2018. I would strongly recommend that you book a coach for the first few times you go out. When foiling you don't have that safe option of bearing away, then you just capsize to windward. We use GUL Evo 2 helmets. The come in a nice looking carbon design. But according to the class rules a specific area must be in a bright color so we customized them with electric tape... And yes, it's a good idea to wear them.

Macht es Sinn am Wind den Traveler ein Stück auf zu machen ? Kommt mir ein wenig eigenartig vor, aber ich bin kein Experte.

Hallo Tim Niclas, Traveler fürs Upwind Foilen oder einfach nur so? Einfach nur so haben wir den Travel kaum benutzt und zum Upwind Foilen haben wir auch nur kurz damit experimentiert. Dieses Video stammt noch aus unserem ersten Jahr am Nacra 17. Zu erkennen an den blauen Schwimmwesten und Helmen. Da haben wir eben noch viel Probiert. Viel wichtiger als der Travel ist ausreichend Cunningham zu ziehen. Dann reicht der Weg der Großschot aus um das Foilen einzuleiten. Abgesehen von der Vorstartphase und für längere Halbwindpassagen habe ich den Traveler eigentlich nur fürs Abfallen in Starkwind verwendet und da erst dann wenn ohne Traveler die Großschot soweit aufgemacht werden müsste, dass der Gegenbauch dann stark bremst. Wir gehören eher zu den Teams die den Traveler selten benutzen. Johannes Polger beispielsweise fährt bei bestimmten Bedingungen auch die Vorwind mit relativ dichter Schot und arbeitet nur mit dem Traveler. Es geht also sicher auch anders. Die Frage ist womit du am besten zurecht kommst. Ich bin mir auch nicht sicher ob sich das so einfach auf den A-Cat übertragen lässt. Du segelst doch A-Cat?

What situation would you only have one board down? I’ve noticed upwind it seams like there’s always both.

On the foiling N17 we always used both daggerboards. There is no practical way of lifting one board or have the boards in a different position than fully in. When I speak of "reducing daggerboards" or "take away the daggerboards", I always mean the angle of the boards and not the amount of how much is in the water.
