Very Hot Stuff - Barbara Dennerlein on Hammond B3 Organ

UPDATE JULY 2022 -- New 4K version of this entire song is linked at the end of this video:
Here it is if you'd like to see it now: • 4K -- EXTRA HOT STUFF ...
Seeing is believing. It looks impossible, but it's true, Barbara Dennerlein plays bass lines with her left foot that I couldn't play with my left hand.
Unlike many organists, she did not begin with piano. When she was 11 years old she began playing organ, including the use of the foot pedals. She took lessons for a year and a half from a teacher who played jazz himself. By the time she was 13 she was completely on her own in regard to her musical development.
Charlie Parker was her musical hero and biggest influence. While she respects Jimmy Smith's musicianship and his enormous contribution to jazz organ, she did not model her playing, sound, technique or musical approach after his.
Like Jimmy, she developed her own personal style and unmistakable sound. Her artistic sensibilities are closer to Larry Young than Jimmy Smith, but they are still very much her own.
In the 80's Jimmy Smith briefly moved from Hammond B3 to another make of organ, experimented with synthesizers and even played electric piano. In the 80's Barbara also began to experiment, but she took a different approach.
She integrated midi technology into her B3 keyboard and sampled an upright bass to give her bass pedals a more realistic sound.
This video is one small glimpse into her musical world, I hope you'll view the other clips on my channel, and enjoy clips by other great B3 players. My hope is that music is enjoyed as a celebration, and not a competition - it's art not sport.
Barbara Dennerlein, Hammond B3 Organ. Dennis Chambers, Drums. (Not shown on clip: Andy Sheppard, Sax, Mitch Watkins, Guitar.) Vienna, 1992
Seeing is believing.

She's one of the most phenomenal musicians to have emerged in the jazz world in the last thirty years and yet she's been allowed to slip under the radar to the extent that she now has difficulty getting bookings anywhere outside of her native Germany. This uniquely talented lady should be seen all round the world.

May I ask how do you know that she is not getting bookings easily? I wonder why if that's the case, frankly. I agree that she is absolutely phenomenal jazz organist.

Paul James:If that is true that is a travesty. When this lousy pandemic is finally over promoters need to do all they can to get these truly talented real musicians out there. And we,the fans who enjoy this great music should go out & see them. They are worth the money. This lady is totally amazing.

During the interval of a gig she played in Berlin in 2004 I managed to grab a few words with her while buying some of her CDs and in response to my inquiry as to when she'll playing in London again she said that she had difficulties getting bookings in the UK. Since then I've seen her once at Ronnie Scott's and another time in a small venue in Manchester, but both of those shows were between ten and fifteen years ago and as far as I'm aware she hasn't played in the UK since.

My idol for so long was Jimmy Smith... and I really loved DiFrancesco when he came along. But this Lady of the Hammond B3 really kicks ass. Her footwork is perfect. Many a bass player would love to play her riffs that accurately. And she does it with her feet. She shows the prowess of the B3 in jazz and in concert. I wished she was here in the USA so I could go marvel at her musical genius.

As a pretty decent bassist myself, I agree. Her left foot swings way better than I can. She absolutely kills it. And that is just her foot. The rest of what she does, putting it all together, is mind-blowing. It's like she's an alien--it doesn't seem possible for a mere mortal to do what she does.

Love her unique, instantly recognizeable percussion sound on the upper keyboard. I know it is MIDI-fied, she has the sound module right in front of her. Can it be that she has some synth patch added? Anyway: great phrasing, Barbara signature sound - high precision playing (her footwork - toes only - is nothing short of perfect). Who am I to judge/analyze/ramble??? Barbara: go girl, kill 'em!

Shocking beautiful! Dennis Chambers did a remarkable work here (and not funky, but jazzy at its best with a bit of Afro Latin: awesome). Organ/drumset improvised duet: I love it (feet power and monster brains: two persons playing like seven, composing in counterpoint in real time!)! Too bad that it is cut (a real crime for me) ! All my admiration, a drumset teacher and author.

She is a new name to me, but I'll have to look for more. Absolutely phenomenal playing. There was a line about Led Zep's Jon Bonham, that he had a "crazy foot" when it came to his drumming(if you've heard him live it's amazing), but Barbara Dennerlein's left foot is absolutely Mad Hatter-insane. Even bass players are struggling to catch up to her here.

I just logged on for a second to see this woman play, and she's great! One of the big problems with this internet, is people hiding in the shadows making questionable comments about artists that quite likely have 10 times more talent then they have. I've been playing full time for 40 years, and I'm no slack, but I couldn't play the way this young woman does. Please have some respect for the talent, and the awesome amount of work that she (and many others) did to get to this point of virtuosity!

As much as I know this is something incredibly technical, I'm not _that_ impressed by the actual musicianship on this clip. The bassline is exactly the same through and through, the sampled midi is corny, and the improv on top of it is allright, but nowhere near the sheer power and feel of Jimmy Smith, Larry Young, Lou Benett or Eddy Louiss... again this is incredible, but this is 80s shred for organ to me. What's the point of sounding like a shitty midi synth when there's fatass b3 bass ?
