Very Large Great White Shark Reacts to Standup Paddleboarder

Recently, I've been filming large great white sharks. These are sub-adult and adult white sharks I've been filming this month.
It's is known that large adult white sharks tend to stay offshore in California while the juveniles hang out in near-shore waters. Lately, it's been the large females near shore I've been observing.

You’re exactly correct about GW’s positive impact on our ecosystem. It’s exciting to have increased sightings of GW’s in the Gulf of Mexico, and closer to beaches in Pensacola and Gulf Shores. They’re not babies, either. One caught off Orange Beach, not too long ago, was approximately 13 feet long. Divers have encountered a few while spear fishing. Definitely good news after 2010’s massive oil spill!

But what stands out as different to me about your videos is how centered and balanced they feel, especially for it being around something that can feel upsetting, and this allows the information you’re sharing be received and processed more gently and deeply. Also, your consideration and sensitivity to all in the way you give warnings is much appreciated. Biologists always say that sharks aren't generally hunting people, but it's hard to really process this until you see this kind of footage, over and over where sharks essentially ignore or avoid people even in close proximity. The emphasis on their unpredictability highlights the need to respect their space, but also not to be in constant terror.

The bigger ones are only evaluating how much energy they would spend if they decided to attack you and make you a meal. So, a major factor would be how recently it has eaten and how hungry it is and if it can spare any energy for an attack. It's why they stalk their prey, boils down to energy expenditure. Other reasons for attacking are territorial but that's a whole other story, they're also at times just coming over out of curiosity. Amazing, beautiful animals.

Larger sharks tend to be more skeptical or calculating with their food choices because they seem to realize that every attempt to eat requires a high level of energy. If the venture appears too risky to undertake, they will likely pass up the opportunity for an easier target, like a wounded seal or a smaller food source that will put up less of a fight than something as large as themselves.
