In this video, we take a look at "Liner" a nearly 40 year old male orca I encountered along the coast of California. Among the footage is a sequence where the orca captures a seal at depth using its echolocation abilities.

Carlos, I am so glad you expressed the need for orca to roam freely. Whilst watching this, I was thinking of those orca that existed and died in captivity. I see 'Liner' swimming in a small patch of ocean, and yet it seemed almost infinitely bigger than those paddling pools the likes of Tillikum and many others spent the greater part of their lives. It should be an internationally recognised criminal offense to treat animals in such a way, regardless of how much money is being made.

@@panicmosem5969 That's inaccurate. Seaworld and other marine parks have never rescued any orcas. During the late 60s and early 70s, orcas were captured from the wild in North America. Following the prohibition of such captures, Seaworld and similar facilities began importing wild orcas from Iceland. Their cessation of this practice occurred only after Iceland also implemented a ban on captures. Only three of those wild-caught orcas (Corky, Katina, and Ulises) remain alive in three Seaworld parks, while the remaining orcas in their possession were born in captivity. Seaworld has not rescued or rehabilitated any orcas, all orcas in their care were either captured in the wild or born in captivity.

Some time ago I saw a video about animatronic sharks. The manufacturer said it was possible to use latex to recreate all kinds of animals, from sharks to dolphins and whales. The animatronic movements of the prototype looked almost real. His idea when designing the model was that animals no longer have to be taken from the wild. And yet we should still be able to see these animals in zoos. Zoos would have the advantage that you buy the animals once and instead of paying for food you would have lower maintenance costs. This would mean that you could see a great white shark in an aquarium or any shark that actually exists. Unfortunately I can't find the video anymore, but I think the idea is worth supporting. This would also mean that killer whales would no longer have to be kept in captivity and used to amuse the crowd.

Sometimes they are kept in captivity because they wouldn't survive in the wild. How terrible of those veterinarians and biologists to help the animals, right?

@@sky_pirate A museum shows dead animals.. stuffed animal, how can kids learn a thing from a dead animal..if someone makes the effort to build an animatronic animal with real movements and present "living" animals to the people in the city, that is much better than taking them from nature, otherwise nothing will change and the animals will continue to be taken from nature where they are missing in the ecological balance and if we have the opportunity to do so, why shouldn't we use it? and you forget .. we talk about living animals.. breeding is shit..

Makes me think of Tilikum. Even in captivity almost all his life, he was nearly the size of Liner. It's absolutely terrible to imagine an animal so massive and so intelligent being stuck in a pool.

His life was tragic. RIP Tilikum, Lolita, Hugo, Moby Doll, Shamu, Namu, Kasatka, Kiska, Gudrun, and other orcas who died in captivity.
@pesilaratnayake162
@pesilaratnayake162 28 дней назад
The idea of such an intelligent and social predator being trapped in a pool for the entertainment of a crowd or gawking apes is heartbreaking. Many have cooperated with humans in the past, such as those who helped humans hunt off the east coast of Australia, and there are marine biologists who swim amongst them today to learn more about their behaviour. They'll tell you what you want to learn about them if you ask nicely.
@anyaw340
@anyaw340 16 дней назад
All animals behave according to their nature. The problem with humans is that we are far more intelligent than all other animals, and are capable of much more - both good and bad - than other animals are. The complexity of the human brain makes us capable of things that other animals are simply not capable of.
@MermaidMusings7
@MermaidMusings7 16 дней назад
Anyaw - orcas possess a highly developed limbic system and the most gyrified brain in the world. These remarkable animals exhibit intricate social structures and communicate through distinct languages that vary not only among different ecotypes but also within individual pods. Cetaceans, particularly dolphins, are known for their high intelligence. Although humans are considered the pinnacle of intelligence, there exist various animal species that demonstrate extraordinary cognitive capabilities.
@pesilaratnayake162
@pesilaratnayake162 16 дней назад
@MermaidMusings7 it's fascinating to study the wide range of species/genera/families, etc. and how they have developed communication methods (also locomotion, and so on) and senses that we never knew existed a few centuries ago. We also have been able to develop many technologies that make use of similar physical properties (either coincidentally or intentionally) to learn more about our environment. Ultrasound, for example, allows us to see the insides of living animals (usually humans), but orcas do this as well using their melons. That's how they know where the best cuts of meat are found! Mmmm, shark liver!

Being mostly slow-mo shots of “Liner” & the other loner Orca in the beginning makes me wonder if they or any other whales recognize drone cameras because of the high level of intelligence they have😄🐳 Surely many of them simply see them as another kind of sea bird but with the several amazing stories of unique encounters so many people have had with Orca’s especially it seems very likely they may even are aware that the drones are from humans & even the known biologists & researchers that certain individuals, like “Liner,” are used to seeing regularly🙂 These videos are always amazing & each being better than the last😁👍

The Southern residents are more often in Washington's Salish sea and the Northern residents are more often in the northern waters of Canada. Another problem for our southern residents is noise from all the boat traffic. Too much noise makes it harder for them to hunt and communicate with each other.
