Brilliant Sir! that was a real treat to watch and very inspiring. In the 50's that's the kind of thing modelmakers did because of lack of resources, glad to see the modelmakers art is still alive and kicking👍👍Well done!

Great job Will and i bet this will be a favourite for people to make as its for FPV and it breaks down so well for transport ;-) you have out done yourself this time mate ;-) they just keep getting better and better ;-) thumbs up as always man.

Remarkable plane - looks like it wouldn't fly! Bet it would be easy to catch too, or put a couple of skids on? I wouldn't call it ugly, just unusual and handsome in a way. A PDF Plan would be great - sure people would pay! Thanks for a great video, Regards, Dave.

what a great model to teach people to fly r/c models there are to many fast moving foamies about that get crashed early on slow flying is the trick giving plenty of time to react for the beginner. good job mate she flies well, I used to make control line planes out of cardboard and fly little 049 glow engines on them. they were heavy as they had rto be fuel proofed to.

Fantastic!.. I love the fact it breaks down into smaller components!. One suggestion: Given the HUGE wing area, looks like you could use a bit more horizontal stabilizer and elevator area... You'd likely have better pitch control and more inherent stability. She may not be pretty, but it does what you designed it to do! Great job!

Really nice plane. hope plans for this and the pylon are ready for summer. the field were i fly has about a 3-4 plane a year disappearance rate so a nice slow plane like this with a fpv cam can circle like a buzzard like you said and find planes.. like the idea

@2010HeliPad Yup. Two layers of dollar tree foam board with a BBQ skewer in there for a little extra support. and a bunch of hot hlue at the "joints" where the struts bend to meet the wing and fuse.

@bluedogtwo I'm not totally sure. But I think it may create slightly more lift with an open bottom however causes more drag. I did it to save weight and make building easier.

Fantastic plane , I will make one of these (well similar) based on your design. I have some lipos esc's and the identical motor and yep i have a few props spare too. So all I need is some foam. Give me a few weeks and I will get back to you. Cheers
@spectrospirit
@spectrospirit 11 лет назад
I actually have 4 big foam plates stowed away and I was thinking about using this on a near-space flight when I'm able to do that. I imagine these wings are creating very good lift compared to any other plane, but also because it's weight. I might need good manoeuvrability because of very little air and this little plane is just right for this purpose. I will send it up with two helium balloons too if you ever wondered about how, I have so many genious ideas, gotta do something soon :)
@wordreet
@wordreet 12 лет назад
You're exactly right. I've only just started with RC planes, but have made lots of kites over the years. And that type of shape should give it's best lift at slower speeds, due to having less drag caused by turbulence. What you basically have is an extreme camber wing, with the top and bottom surfaces having almost exactly the same curvature. Did you ever read up on Larwence Hargrave? But with more weight this plane should handle stronger breezes very nicely.

That would make a good trainer plane too, you can keep it slow enough to stay out of trouble, it gives the student time to react to their mistakes, and it's cheap to repair.

That's an impressive built r/c plane you got there! I know the build would probably be challenging, but so would the electronics & whatnot you put on it to get it to fly. I'll just stick with the factory made r/c stuff. lol

I'm gonna make one like this. Big, slow, and floaty. I may have ordered to big of motor though (Turnigy D3530/14 w/10x4.5 prop). I can probably adjust the nose weight by shortening the nose closer to the wing.

Shorter story ( damn I shouldve wrote this in a doc) Hey Mikey and friends! Me and my friends built the SportTrainer about five years ago and pounded the shit out of it :) We flew, we crashed, we glued...... we flew...... everybody was so exited that this thing accually took off and accually flew.
@MikeysRC

I used short pieces of 1/4 inch dowel that pushed into tongue depressors with holes drilled into them with a really snug fit. The whole removable system was kind a PITA to make which is part of the reason I didn't make plans for the plane.

From dealing with Ultralite Aircraft the para-sail or open bottom gives more slow down ,drag, sail, more stable in calm air but less in bumpy or windy air will fly best early morning in cold weather from exp. with MX Sprint and MX Sport

Add tapered wingtips for even slower flight and more aerodynamic wing. Just a suggestion. It will help glide ability too.
@MikeysRC
@MikeysRC 13 лет назад
@RoelandDNL Well basically the plane needed more pilot control input that I was happy with to fly in different flight conditions. And the wings were just a bit too large for the material and the way they were constructed. They had a slight warp to them which made for kinda weird flight characteristics.

Hi mikey. Love your vids, coz everything Ido is done on a shoestring budget. a few years back I made them mistake of buying a RTF D RC heli. I cant fly it. I dunno if there's something wrong, or went to a too advanced chopper too quick. Its Blade . Do you think I can re-use the out runner motor, servos and radio gear for a scratch built plane?

2:20 The normal procedure is to glide the plane first, and not use any power until you get the glide you want. Then adjust down-thrust on the prop for good powered flight.

@GPSNOWisrael That's because there are no plans for it yet. I don't know if coroplast is the right material for this plane. IT will at least double the weigh of the airframe VS. the dollar tree foam I use.

Great Plane!. Have you tried changing the angle of wings ? right now it seems to be zero. How about 5 or 10 degrees ? Also why did you not keep the upper surface of wings as a smooth curve instead of a triangular profile ? Is the triangular profile better ?

pretty cool and functional but flying into the wind you can make a lot of rc planes fly slow, show us crosswind or downwind what kind of range could this plane go? can you make it go faster to cover more distance and then slow down for filming, or is its range limited due to its slow speed? or even battery life?
@shannonwittman950

Thanks for this video of a great idea! After watching it, and videos of similar designs, I've decided this is the best way to getting the hang of R/C flying. Its slow and forgiving, allows beginners to screw up and not necessarily crash. And if it does crash, its an inexpensive repair. I'm a flying scale modeler, so I'd like to do a design loosely following the Mignet Flying Flea from the 1930's. Its got the big wing high up front and an almost-as-big wing (also with airfoil) where the horizontal stabilizer is located. Regarding airfoils, I'd be inclined to do a smooth airfoil instead of your angular two-piece design. Look online at the Flying Flea. What do you recommend for a motor and prop for this size plane?
