The Fish is a plane I designed in early Spring to teach members of my high school Aviation Club to fly. It is built out of two sheets of Dollar Tree Foamboard. Having taught several new pilots with this aircraft, I can say with confidence that the plane is very easy to fly. Surprisingly, it's also fun for more experienced guys because it can be made to fly in very small spaces and through tight obstacles. I have on heli friend who can hover it no problem.
Read more on the FliteTest Website: flitetest.com/articles/the-fis...
Download the free plans: www.dropbox.com/sh/r1xu16glgo...
The plans are sized to fit perfectly on standard dollar tree foam board or Adam's ReadyBoard, so that means 20"x30"
Components:
Motor - 2200kv AXN Replacement motor
ESC - 30A Hobbyking (way more than necessary)
Prop - 8x4 Electric Slowfly
Battery - Anywhere from 2s 800mAh to 3s 2200mAh

I designed and constructed my own slow-flyer plane with an airfoil similar to the Fish but with more under camber. I find it's graceful even in high winds when flying straight and level but it has some really unusual pitching moments when climbing. Also for some bizarre reason it becomes a handful close to the ground when I try to to land. Has anyone else had the same experience?

Nice build and nice flying! I hope that the direction of state and local legislators doesn't ground everyone from flying at the local school yards, but it's looking grim. . It's great to see young folks having fun together! Keep em' flying man!

Just flew the fish today! I actually had a chat with a police officer while we were flying about his knowledge concerning regulations, and he said he had no idea that there we even rules regarding RC planes. He basically said it was super cool, and that he wouldn't feel compelled to take any action unless he deemed it to be unsafe usage. I think in general, if pilots or respectful and responsible, we should have little trouble flying in most public parks. Here's a photo from today: izzybrand.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/03/image1.jpg

I don't peel anything off, it adds to the strength but is a bit of pain if you crash like i do sometimes (getting a lot better though) and it will start to peel. No big deal though just either glue it back on or peel it. What I will say is that I was having trouble steering for some reasons so after a while, I added about an inch to the rudder and it turns on a dime now. So, that is a bit of advise when making this plane. Add about or inch or inch or a half to the rudder, way better control on the air. I will say that this plane is so fun to fly. This weekend I put my Sony Bloggie on top again and got some aerial footage, it was nice. its amazing how much lift this plane has.

Well it flew!! need to add some down/right thrust, but other than that it fly's great (considering I flew it on a 15mph wind day)! Used a cheap 2212 1400kv motor combo and a 3s 1300. I am postive ANYONE could built this plane, I did a sloppy job and everything was pretty out of wack but it doesn't seem to care. I 3d printed a thrust washer for my motor and now im just waiting for calm day so that i can fly this plane the way it was meant to be flown :) Thanks for the Free plans!!! [[[btw for anyone wondering, the cg is about 3 1/4 inches back from the leading edge (its not picky tho)]]]

This Seems like a perfect platform for a Control Theory project we have coming! Although I'd still add the ailerons too, for enhanced maneuverability. One question though, do you think they'd do a better job further from the fuselage, or closer to it, like flaps?
@RaptorTech
@RaptorTech 9 лет назад
Farther from the fuselage will give you much more control authority (torque = force*distance). For the control theory project, are you developing an autopilot?
@DaWalkDude
@DaWalkDude 9 лет назад
Essentially! Although rather than getting everything built at once, we've chosen to develop in stages. First is automatic stabilization, second altitude hold and lastly, path following. Might have to reverse engineer and tweak a thing or two, as it'll have to hold a hefty (about 2 pounds!) worth of batteries, a microcontroller and a few more bits and pieces. Thanks for the answer by the way!

dude im still trying other planes to fly and i keep finding myself going back to the fish. there is no comparison at all. thanks providing for the pdf,by the way whats the difference of FISH V1 AND V2??? any major changes?im worried about how the wing constructed
@RaptorTech
@RaptorTech 9 лет назад
The fish V2 now has cutouts on the side of the fuselage. This makes it much easier to get at all your electronics, and reduces the effects of a crosswind. I also changed the shape of the joint where the tail meets the fuselage to make it stronger. other than that, they are very similar. As for how the wing is constructed, glue the formers onto the 3 seperate pieces first. Then use a combination of tape and hot glue to hold the angle. I've never had a wing fold, and i've flown this thing with a 3s 4400mAh (it was silly but I was curious).

@responderman
@responderman 9 лет назад
Hello, Just come back into model aircraft after a 30 year break. I was looking for plans for a slow flying plane that was easy to build and also fly to relearn and your plane looks just right. Keeping in mind that when I last stopped there was no such thing as foam board or efficient brush less motors or lipo batteries so its like starting over again. Having said that I have built your plane in less than a day and was amazed how easy it was to use foam board. It doesn't have the finish of balsa wood but its so resilient to knocks it has to be a good trade off. An equivalent plane in balsa would take weeks to build, so in encouraged by the advance in materials. Looking at the lads flying this plane, it seems a very docile machine to fly and an excellent base for an FPV platform that I intend to try out. 30 years ago if you wanted to see the view from your plane you had to fit a relatively large film camera and fit some kind of trigger to take a photo. Then wait a week for the photographs to be developed. so FPV is an amazing leap forward in technology to me. OK I'm feeling old now haha thank you for sharing your design for others to use, I will add another post late to share my experience with it flying later on. All the best Jay
@RaptorTech
@RaptorTech 9 лет назад
Welcome back to the hobby! I'm glad the fish is working out for you! Foamboard is definitely a pretty special building material. As for FPV, the Fish works great. I was out FPVing one day and i crashed pretty hard. The only other plane I had with me was the fish, so I ripped all my gear out of the downed plane and duck taped it to the fish.... It was great! When the wind is low, it's a ton of fun to do some proximity flying with it.
@responderman
@responderman 9 лет назад
RaptorTech Well i now have my own Fish ready to fly, so now it blows a gale and hammers it down with rain. sods law :-) one question remaining is where do you have your C of G on the fish? i see you say it is reasonably flexible in its settings, but as you have the most experience with this plane i thought i better ask. I have it at around 1/3 of the wing chord at this moment many thanks Jay
@RaptorTech
@RaptorTech 9 лет назад
I don't have a Fish on hand, but from memory, I think it usually ends up somewhere in around 3 inches back from the leading edge. that's a guess... but I know it's in between the two creases in the wing.

Hey, what you think about making it into pusher?
@RaptorTech
@RaptorTech 9 лет назад
Denasdc I think it's feasible with the low(ish) tail boom. The battery will have to be fairly far forward to get CG right. If you're up for some serious modifications, I would try to reduce the horizontal surface area of the front of the plane by making the nose more sloped down starting at the wings. Go for it!

@tedramsey8172
@tedramsey8172 9 лет назад
My son and I have assembled the plane and are ready to attach the motor. This is our first plane, and I'm not sure how to attach the motor. In one of your write-ups, you mentioned that you were not satisfied with strength of the foam board/plywood motor mount. I was going to attach a firewall to the top of the fuselage with two dowels inserted into the foam board. I was then going to hot glue the sides of the firewall to the interior edges of the fuselage. Please let me know if you have any thoughts about this approach for mounting the motor of if you have an alternative method that you think would work better. Thanks,
@wagbagsag
@wagbagsag 9 лет назад
What I've been doing is putting popsicle sticks on the inside of the fuselage extending back about 2 inches. I then hoe glue my motor mount on in between the two walls and to the top of the fuse. The reason I said it wasn't strong enough is because learning pilots tend to crash nose first and push the firewall back into the fuselage. If you can avoid full throttle nose dives, then you'll be more than fine. It takes very little thrust to lift the plane, so the firewall only needs to be as strong enough to hold up to crashes.

OK, we finished the plane and took it out for a maiden flight. The elevator surface was level when we launched it and I think that we have the battery placed at the center of gravity. Unfortunately, the plane pitched upward and flew with the nose pointing to the sky. When we cut back on the throttle, the plane stalled and crashed. Is it possible that the motor should be mounted so that it angles down a few degrees? Can you think of other reasons why the plane would fly like this? Thanks,
@RaptorTech
@RaptorTech 9 лет назад
I usually have my thrust angle down between 5 and 10 degrees (it changes between crashes :) ) . You may want to move the battery forward a bit. Some down trim will help as well. In general, this plane is not very picky about how you set it up, so do whatever you think will make a difference and I'm sure it will fly fine!

Also, I plan to make a video showing some build tips and more flight footage (at night) when the plans are finalized, so if you're patient you can expect at least an update if not a full blown build video. It's a very nice plane, any chance you can point us to some plans for it Please !

They don't exist yet, but I am making them now! It's a little difficult because I cut apart the first plane to to trace the pieces to make 4 more with some students, so now I have to get one of those planes to measure everything again. Soon though!

Thank you so much for taking the time to create the plans for this plane, I just know it's going to be a real popular model, as it flies so well.

did you use 2s or 3s battery in this video ? which them
@RaptorTech
@RaptorTech 9 лет назад
Almost all of it was on 2s 800mah. The hovering was with a 3s 2200.

how many minutes the fish is flying with 2s 800mah battery ?
@RaptorTech

8-10, maybe? Really depends on your flying style. You can certainly squeeze more out of it.
@sochineze

does it glides?
@maxrobertson5061
@maxrobertson5061 6 лет назад
Of course it glides. Why wouldn't it? All a motor and propeller does is drag it along to get airflow over the surfaces. The equivalent, in calm air, of cutting the motor, is putting the nose down to keep up the airspeed. That said, it needs a steep descent to keep up that airspeed as it's so light and has so much drag that you have to work at keeping the speed up. I have deliberately NOT set the ESC brake "on" on my model specifically to increase the drag on zero throttle. This has the effect of the windmilling prop acting as a further source of drag and allowing a very steep approach to be made and I can sometimes get a roll-out of 3 inches or less on my Bixler 2 -sourced janding gear. If I get THAT wrong, then it's out with the hot glue gun again to add another lollipop stick to the structure. It's a great wee plane to teach you how to handle drag, power, dutch roll-control and steep approach techniques.

Each of the sheets for the plans are 20x30 inches. To print them out, open with Adobe Reader, and select print. In the options, select poster mode. The stock overlap should work fine. This will print out tiled plans which can be taped together
@slightlyokvideos
@slightlyokvideos 8 лет назад
+RaptorTech Man I wish I'd known that before! My cousin who belongs to you're aviation club sent me the plans, I had to copy the sheet into excel and do some weird printing option. I ended up with a 2/3 scale fish which is what I thought was the full size until I met up with my cousin six months later. No wonder it flew fast for what was suppost to be a trainer!

guruji243 Funny enough; I've never weighed the thing. I would guess that all up should be right around 1lb, but I could be very wrong

I have the following motor: Emax 2212 1400kv, weight 60-150g depending on the site. Regardless, it is heavier than the moto you suggest using. www.banggood.com/Emax-XA2212-820KV-980KV-1400KV-Brushless-Motor-For-RC-Models-p-918124.html Do you think this would be suitable for the fish or old fogey? I am wondering if it is too heavy? My maiden flight of my old fogey build was a bit disasterous. Thought I had it well balanced with the COG correct as suggested by FT, but it just wanted to nose down immediately. Do you think using the motor you suggest (FC 22-28 1200kv) would help?
@RaptorTech
@RaptorTech 9 лет назад
It's certainly heavier, but the fish would totally fly fine with the extra weight. I would suggest putting your servos closer to the tail to account for the nose weight.

I made a model of plane in google sketchup and tried using a special plugin to flatten out the model. I was able to do this successfully, but never managed to generate an SVG from the sketchup file. I can send you a screenshot of the plans in Sketchup, but I'm not sure they will be usable. I'm really sorry I haven't been able to post them, but in the mean time, if you're looking for a plane with similar characteristics and better documentation, I've heard the FliteTest Old Fogey is very similar to fly: flitetest.com/articles/FT_Old_Fogey_Scratch_Build
