By the way, thanks for the rust tip. We just purchased our secondhand rides last week, and we forget about such things, living in the desert. I'm happy to report that there is only one small spot on the undercarriage of the '13, likely as she is originaly from San Fransisco, and I will take care of it tout de suite.

Enjoyed your video again, after the last 10+ years and 3 Harley-Davidsons. This last one a Softail Streetbob 1745cc I decided to considerably downsize. After some thought I've traded it in for a new Vespa GTS 300 SUPER SPORT, in blue. I contacted a Vespa dealership in Manchester. A deal was sorted the Harley was picked up yesterday. The Vespa will be delivered in a week or so. I will use the Vespa for shorting Ridoute and NEVER if possible in the rain, lol. In that case a topbox is a no,no. I'll probably after running Vespa in get an after market exhaust fitted. As Harley riders would say "keep that mother runnin". Suppose I best get some Vespa mates.
@LurgsHowToGuides
@LurgsHowToGuides 3 года назад
Now that is a downsize from a 1745cc to a 278cc. I’ve had loads of motorcycles (but never a Harley) and I do find the Vespa GTS300 a great all rounder, plenty of punch up to 75mph and nimble. The twist and go is just genius. Enjoy your Vespa and ride safe. 🛵

Nice ride on your Vespa Gts 300 I bought a Vespa Primaver 150cc but I had seeing the GTS 300 getting more popular every day although I don't have any complain in my 150 cc, the thing is the GTS 300 new cost around 7,000.00 U.S. dollars and for the primavera 150 I paid 5,500 only and now the 2022 Vespa gts 300 will be better , congrats you have a nice ride, Thanks

Hey lugs great video... I'm looking to get that scooter soon.... I was not aware of that rust problem.. What do you suggest on protecting the paint? Is it only on the front and bottom?
@LurgsHowToGuides
@LurgsHowToGuides 5 лет назад
peterah7957 It's just the underneath. Just check it carefully, it might be ok. Apparently rustoleum is good and also to fit a sluk guard on the front to stop stones flying up and chipping it. Apart from this rust issue it's a great scooter. I've always had big motorbikes but this is perfect and plenty fast enough. Thanks for the comment, please subscribe if you found this useful, would really appreciate it. Good luck with the search for a Vespa

i think the little wheels and lack of effective mudguard does mean that a lot of stones are spat up and chip away at the very thin paint....Maybe some of the gloopy coating that's put on car seals would be worth applying on the underside.

Bath is lovely, went to the rooftop swimming pool once, amazing. Yes this is a great all round bike, plenty of power. Just have a good look underneath for the rust that's all. I put a new battery in mine recently (easy job) and apart from that it's been ace. Cruises at 75mph. Great acceleration from lights and twist and go is just amazing. I was going to mention the rustiness, but you covered that, do you think it's from a lot of wet roads/rain over there? I just got a new GTS 300 and ride only by the beach which is a salty air environment. Can you suggest anything other than washing and wiping bike a lot? Irregardless, absolutely love the "twist and go" after riding large motorcycles all of my life, and so smooth at 40-45 I feel like I'm floating on air. Great job on the video and "swerve carefully"!
@LurgsHowToGuides
@LurgsHowToGuides 5 лет назад
I live in England so lots of salty roads but the mileage on mine is low and I always have it garaged. It's just very poor quality, there's people who have them written off when it just rots away. Piaggio should be ashamed. I'm not impressed. But as you say it rides sweet, very quick all the way up to 80mph. Thanks for visiting my channel and please subscribe if you found this useful. I've also got a Vespa GTS 300 How To Playlist so lots of useful stuff in there. Ride safe. I've got a Rust video as well, lots of comments on there about how to treat it.

Metal Zombie666 If you live in a dry country it should be ok. Here in England it's wet cold winters with salty roads. Great review! I am thinking about buying one and this review is still of great help! What I want to ask is does this scooter have any small problems except rust? Is there any effective way to solve the rust issues? And how comfortable is it when you carrying a passenger, for both passenger and rider?
@LurgsHowToGuides
@LurgsHowToGuides 3 года назад
I’ve had no issues really apart from the rust, but you may find another model may not have the rust issue, deffo worth checking. It is very comfortable for a pillion especially with the top box on, only issue with carrying a pillion is the pillion footpegs, not much space to put your feet down when stopping, overall it’s a nice ride but expensive

The rust and corrosion issues seem to depend on where you live. I have a 2006 GT200, and there is absolutely NO rust or corrosion anywhere. I live in a very dry climate nowhere near the ocean. Rain or salt water will cause Vespas to rust and corrode like crazy. VERY comfortable for a rider, at 240 pounds I've never tried to carry a passenger.

Hello. Very good video. Thank you. My plan is to buy this bike and do travel trips arround my country and abroad. Could you share what speed is best for it when driving in two for longer distances? Our weight is 75 + 70 kg + 30 kg luggage. Total 175kg. Is it possible to drive 70mph without overloading the engine? Also, do you think a distance of 180-240 miles per day would be possible and comfortable travel while doing this intwo?
@LurgsHowToGuides
@LurgsHowToGuides 4 года назад
Rapolas Valašinas That’s nearly 28 stone which is a lot of weight for a 278cc engine to pull. The Vespa GTS300 is very comfortable and should still be able to cruise at 70mph with all that weight. It may struggle up inclines. Also you do sit quite upright so wind in your chest and face may start to ache after 100miles. I think one up you’d be fine but that much weight over that many miles is gonna be a pain I think. It needs filling up every 150miles so you’d need to stop anyway. Any other questions I’ll be happy to answer.

I'm considering buying a GTS 250. What would you pay for a very clean 2005, GTS 250 with 1600 miles? I also have 2 bikes, but always wanted a Vespa, had a few scoots, the best one was the Honda SH300i, but ugly as. 👍☘
@LurgsHowToGuides
@LurgsHowToGuides 5 лет назад
IRISHROVER Not much difference in power to the Vespa GTS 300 as it's actually a 273cc engine. Make sure no major rust underneath. With that low mileage it should be in great nick. Personally I wouldn't pay more than £1500 as it is nearly 14 years old. Give it a rest ride first. Good luck.

Tell me, can one use the passenger foot pegs comfortably while not carrying a pillion?, as I believe I'd have better control with legs astride, then in front like sitting in a chair. I say this as many moons ago as a rider of a 1959 Triumph Thunderbird 650 for many years, I took a mates Vespa for a spin and felt downright unbalanced in leaning into corners. It felt like you had to make a conscious effort to lean it over, whereas on the Trumpy, it was like thinking it around a bend. As an old geezer now, I'm considering the Vespa 300 GTS, or if I'm lucky, pick up a Vespa 946 to tool around on. Cheers and many thanks for your fine video...
@LurgsHowToGuides
@LurgsHowToGuides 6 лет назад
David Hamilton Not unless you are very tall. They are set quite far back so if you sat on it and put your feet on them I think they'd fold back in. You can of course just put your feet further back or have them up front. Probably like you I've been a motorcycle person(see my video of all my motorcycles) but now have the Vespa. It's so practical and still super quick on acceleration. Very happy with it apart from the underside rust issue. Good luck in your choice. It does take a bit of getting used to.

*Theraphim Herbraeorum* Many thanks for your feedback and for pointing out the better improvements over the older models. I was thinking of buying a Vespa when I retire to the Philippines later this year or the next, but found out they're quite pricy and cannot find any dealerships there. However, Kymco, which is made in Taiwan has a model that is almost identical to a Vespa. Called a "Like", it has what they term "Noodoe" technology, having all the latest modern tech, including ABS and has dealerships all across the Philippines. It sells for 78,000PH pesos, or aprox: $US1600. I'm told that the price of a Vespa in the US is around $7000, which is 350,000PH pesos. Check out the Kymco Like on You Tube, it's looks good. Cheers...

*Theraphim Hebraeorum* I don't envisage a lot of travelling between the islands, but will settle where the wife's family are. Bohol is a beautiful spot and attracts a lot of tourists, the Chocolate Hills being quite a popular attraction. It's also close to Cebu and some fine medical facilities. I know what you mean ref local mechanics with the latest tech, but I'll also have access to a crew cab pick up to bring the scooter to a dealer, if something goes wrong at home. Thank you again for your reply and your views of the Like being a good scooter. Just counting the days until I'm there. All the best to you as well. Ride safe, cheerio...

Sadly, you can't bump-start any scooter, because of the centrifugal clutch - it'll stay disengaged unless the motor is already running at the neccessary rpm

Hey this is Devil’s Dyke... I am thinking about buying one of these. My GT200 has been written off because of the rust issue underneath ... But I still think these are the best for town. Any second hand ones in your radar ?
@LurgsHowToGuides
@LurgsHowToGuides 5 лет назад
The rust issue is a nightmare, it's putting me off getting another, I had a Vespa ET4 but that never had a rust problem. Nothing on my radar but CD Scooters get some nice Vespa's in, keep an eye on their website. Shame about the Rust as they ride superb. My GTS 300 has plenty of power for all situations.

Nice scooter. But I do see a lot of rust and corrosion on it. I have a 2006 (carbureted) GT200 in AZ, U.S., and it has no corrosion anywhere. Doesn't seem like a good idea to shove a wet cover back up into the seat base. The gas filler is a disaster. I have to keep a small gas container and funnel with me in order to get the tank full without splashing gas all over the place. DO NOT lose the original key. It will cost you a fortune. I have the top box, and keep it full most of the time. No bar end weights, and never had so much as a hint of a wobble. The sidestand is self retracting, and if you hold the scooter up just a little, it will retract the sidestand and the scooter will fall over. There is a modification you can do to prevent this

Just had me wondering when you said it’s a design flaw that Vespa haven’t built in the ability to bump start the gts and you think it’s purely because you have to pull in a brake before you can start it? If you know how to bump start Any automatic then I would be greatfull if you can teach me, I thought it wasn’t possible with all of them.
@LurgsHowToGuides
@LurgsHowToGuides 5 лет назад
David Carroll No way you can bump start the automatic Vespas. It's a safety feature really to stop you starting it with throttle and then it would shoot off as soon as it started. Luckily mine always starts!

I had a 2008 GTS 300ie super, I didn’t buy it new. Part exchanged a Yamaha Fazer 1000 for it. I kept it 3years and it always started straight off the button never failed. Unfortunately I got the urge for another bike and had a bmw 1100 which I’ve had for almost 3years. But because of spinal injury and old age. Or relatively I’m 60 it’s becoming an handful to manoeuvre so.. and this is a first in 42 years of having bikes and scooters I’m buying exactly the same thing twice and in two days time my 4,000mile 2015 Vespa GTS 300ie Super will be coming. Ps. I had exactly the same problem with my first one that you’re having with the corrosion in that area. I’ve got one now with no sign of so I’m going to put some of that protective clear film on it. For My other one I had an aluminium plate made special for me rather like a sump protector on a trail bike, very smart it was when installed and polished, I put that sucker on after fetching all the rust out and put loads of wax oil behind it and inside the frame while the panels were off. That one is still near where I live and it doesn’t look any different

It really is a great all rounder with plenty of power. My Top Box does make it look a bit uglier and probably hinders Top Speed but its invaluable for locking my helmet inside when I go anywhere, and taking a Pillion feels a lot safer with that behind them. Ride Safe David and thanks for the comments. I've got a video on my channel of all the Motorbikes I've ever owned, glad I kept photos, you might spot a few you've had in the past > ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-R5O5CT6rLCg.html

Lol, my new one has the Vespa colour coded top box on as well. I’m of the same opinion as you, personally it’s a bit sensible and ‘old mannish ‘ but I know how handy it will be so I’m going to leave it on. At least for now. The rack the first owner has put on is similar to the one I had on the other, in that when the top box is off the base springs back up neat. I wish the top box was like the givi system where pressing a simple red button lifts it off, also on my other one I had the smoked short Vespa one on. That was nice without being obtrusive. The one on at the moment is the large Vespa touring screen, again very sensible but not so stylish. I’m fine with that and it should keep the worst of the weather off me better than my other one. It’s a fine machine that I used to do 220-250 mile day trips to the coast on, no problem. I think where I missed it the most when I went back to a bike was in town and city. It’s probably the best two wheels I’ve ever had for that. Longer rides are fine too. I mean when you think about it some people call it too slow for long journeys. And yet the max speed anywhere in this country is 70 which is a speed it will still sit at on part throttle once you have it up to speed. So why is it slow? Unfortunately in the uk a lot of riders are sportsbike mad and anti scooter, Oh yes I did have a bike at one time that topped out at a claimed 175mph! Did I use that? Did I really need that? No it’s more just for the ego trip thinking your bike can do that in theory. I think if I had to wish for a little more oomph it would be in the 40-75 marker that would help with brisk overtakes on long journeys. But 90% of the time it does everything so well. Plus it does a lot more to the litre than some bikes I’ve owned. 30-35mpg isn’t so good at today’s fuel prices oh and my road tax as come down by half. Great to talk to a fellow enthusiast
@smirnaft
@smirnaft 3 года назад
The clutch design does not allow the rear wheel to engage the engine. No matter how fast you would run. So it’s not the safety feature of holding the breaks that prevents bump starting it.

I’m amazed that Piaggio don’t cater for smaller humans, seems like a missed opportunity to me. Only thing I can think of is maybe an aftermarket seat with way less padding in it and not as tall so that you can get your feet down easier. Only other thing you can do is when you know you are stopping just sit way forwards and slip off the seat to put your feet on the ground. If you find a decent solution let me know and safe riding to you. 😎🛵

Best bet is to take it back to bare metal then treat it with some serious anti rust paint. But I'll probably take it to a specialist garage that deals with rust (before it gets too bad & needs plates). Not happy though. Very disappointing quality for something so expensive.
