Vetus anti siphon valve check - prevent flooding the engine with seawater

If you experience water drips from your siphon valve vent hose the valve inside can be stuck or filled with dirt.
The valve is one of the overlooked things in many boats but must be checked regularly.
The system is in many boats mostly a unit made of steel but in my boat it is a 100 US Dollar plastic valve made by Vetus who also make a lot of good quality equipment for boats.

Many thanks. This helped me clean mine. TOP TIP - for a periodic quick check, blow down the air intake pipe gently - this should be possible. The suck, this should NOT be possible. Sometimes you can hear/feel the valve closing / opening. Very reassuring. But, yes also clean periodically. Of course the vent pipe must not be in danger of being submerged in bilge water, this would have obvious bad consequences!

I've only just found your channel. Of course, subscribed so that I don't miss another. Well done on getting these out so well. I find it really difficult to carry out maintenance with one hand whilst holding a camera steady with the other, and then to speak in a foreign tongue as well is just awesome. Thanks for the videos. I'm learning more than I thought I would with these.

Yes, thanks for this. I did not know exactly how these siphons (pronounced sigh-fun) things work --- and now I understand. Thanks Tino

You cross oceans single handed without knowing how a little valve that could kill you works? :) Love your youtube vids.

Guilty as charged! :-) I had never opened my syphon. That said, when I was a boy, it was very common to hear about syphon problems (including sinkings in marinas). I think the systems have improved dramatically, as I have not heard of a serious syphon incident in recent years. Thanks to Tino for opening one up and showing us how it works.

Thank you Tino! Just cleaned mine and I was bit reluctant to pull the valve out. Thanks to you I could do it without fearing to damage anything.

Thanks for all the videos you've produced for your Bavaria 32 Tino; as I have the same boat I've found them very useful. On this project I could not get the back cap screw loose because of the clearance problem, so I removed the whole assembly and bracket by removing the the 4 bracket screws. It was very quick, and easy to replace. To others, I recommend that you do not remove the two bolts holding the valve to the bracket as they have loose nuts on the back that will fall off and then you'll have to remove the bracket anyway.

To Make it easier take two pipes off and remove the unit from the bulkhead and wash it through in the sink

Your anti siphon valves goes after your heat exchanger to your exhaust mixing elbow, not after your sea water pump.

I missed a few videos. This was a good one - a good look at a small but important part. I'm wondering if the little bit of water staining is a small burp/few drops that get squeezed up into the vent line when the valve opens and closes. It would be interesting to put a small cup under the vent to see how much water comes out of the line if you see water marks on the fire wall again.
@twiper
@twiper 6 лет назад
I think the water drop marks is from the old syphon valve since most of the original mounted valves are made of metal. The syphon valve is designed so that only air can flow in one direction, if drops of water is entering the tube someting is wrong since the valve is closed with a spring and sealed with a O-ring.I have seen other boat videos where people puts down the valve hose in a bottle next to the engine, think it is a "easy fix" instead of fixing the valve. I also know you can get valve less systems and they will spit some water occasionally.

... thank you for the video. I would like to exchange my original Volvo Penta valve (defective) for the Vetus valve. However, my valve sits in front of the impeller pump? I.e. my seawater is sucked through the gooseneck and the valve and not pushed through. Do you think I need to change this, i.e. install the vacuum valve between the impeller pump and the engine? thank you for your opinion.

Hej tino Fin video om antihæveret. Hvor højt ligger din motor i forhold til vandlinien ?
@twiper
@twiper 3 года назад
Tror den ligger i retning af 30 cm. under vandlinien hvis jeg skulle gi et bud
@enduranceendurance5770
@enduranceendurance5770 3 года назад
@twiper
@twiper 3 года назад

Thanks so much for your video tutorial. I was cleaning out all my salt water cooling system and i find this device which is not in any of the manuals so im sure a previous owner installed it. They have installed it different to the way you have it, You have it going from your sea water sea cock but the previous owner of my sail boat installed this after the temperature switch so after its already gone into the engine. This is bad right? and this installation wont stop the flooding of the boat if the seacock goes bad so iv digging in the piping diagrams and whats suppose to happen is the seawater come in via the seacock and into the pump then into a t junction which goes to the engine block and also up to a temp switch then into a mixing elbow and out the exhaust etc but on mine the piping has been diverted from the temp switch into that anti syphon valve and back through then into the mixing elbow instead of how you have it going in the psyphon valve directly from the seacock. Thanks for videos I am subscribing xxx
@twiper
@twiper 4 года назад
Thanks for subscribing :) - You mention you have a temperature switch, maybe you have a water flow control system installed. Some people has this system mounted due to the safety of the cooling system, if there is to little waterflow you will get a alarm before the engine and exhaust overheat.
@HarksModding
@HarksModding 4 года назад
@@twiper thanks for your reply, the temp switch is factory default I believe as its shown in the original diagrams for my engine, from my understanding it controls at what temp the engine opens and uses the cooling as well as how you explain about the temp over heat alarm, I show it in my latest blog video if it peaks your interest. The installation is very strange to me being as its installed at the very end of the system instead of right at the start.

The valve is typically shown on the exhaust water ,see www.vetus.com/media/magentominds/sasdocument/20191118090431_0.pdf for the vetus instructions or have a look at the Beta engines installation requirements.
@HarksModding
@HarksModding 4 года назад
@@swalemouth Thanks for this and apologies I was not notified your reply. Ill have a look hopefully it will help me, im convinced it is an incorrect installation maybe a previous owner installed it without enough knowledge. My anti syphon valve is installed as i say after the water is sent to the engine and before it reaches the mixing elbow. its still very strange to me why it was installed in this stage of the system and not at the start like everyone else. iv had a few people look and no one can tell me why this has been installed like this. Every single other 1gm10 engine iv seen has it either at the start of system before water enters engine or they just install a water filter above the waterline

Should use teflon spray "Spray the valve with Teflon spray and fit it in the housing. Do not use any silicone oil, engine oil or grease" from Vetus usermanual
@TheBircat
@TheBircat 3 года назад
Yes, teflon spray on the valve, but silicone grease on the gasket.

Please your English is not suffice to explain this very important science related condition, that if it is not fully understand, it becomes a very costly and possible engine removal needing pistons replaced costing thousands of dollars. When speaking a foreign language to understand context and various ideas pertaining to wording is important. You are not only butchering the language, but doing a great disservice. Do you know a lot of sailboats with engines do not need to bother about synphoning and others do. Even tiolets and fueltanks may need to address this problem. What are the various ways to address these problems There are several. Which one is best. Your not being helpful.
