VGTV: Boy soprano Aksel Rykkvin (13) in the opera role 'Yniold'

In April 2017, when Aksel was still in the Children's Chorus at the Norwegian Opera & Ballet, Aksel received immense praise for his role as 'Yniold' in Claude Debussy's only opera, 'Pelléas et Mélisande. A few days before the premiere, VGTV (TV channel of one of Norway's biggest newspapers) visited the set and made a short TV feature.
Aksel and the conductor of the Children's Chorus, Edle Stray-Pedersen, were interviewed. Aksel also sang Mozart's ' Voi che sapete' in the foyer.

I follow Aksel for many many years and he just keeps touching people with his beautiful voice, from Soprano, to treble and now this stunning Baritone.

I recommend washing the ears with Aksel Rykkvin twice a day to maintain the taste for beauty and protect them from the mediocrity of today's "autotune" singers. Life is too short to waste time on mediocre art. I hope that one day you will come and sing in France. You are often in the United Kingdom but in France we eat much better and the climate is more pleasant, which must undoubtedly be more beneficial for your voice. Merci Aksel for everything you bring us.

Hope it will work 🤪 But France, yes, the six weeks or so I stayed in Paris to sing at the Opera Comique in 2017 was pure joy, foodwise and otherwise. Would of course love to come back to sing!

I remember him. I wonder what he's doing now?! 🙂 Left behind all that talk of what happens after the voice change and just doing so so well. It has been a joy to follow how things have gone and how well Aksel is doing.

@@AkselRykkvin I remember many decades ago a cartoon in Punch, a long defunct humorous magazine. A choirboy sits at a bar, dressed in cassock and ruff with a half empty bottle of whisky in front of him, and the caption, "I used to be famous once". I knew immediately when I remembered it that it couldn't be you. It would be two empty bottles as you're Norwegian! Anyway, what all those questions missed was the point that your boy soprano voice was always going to be transient, but to enjoy the moment! But as my friend Emma who came to the LSE with me said, she can hear the clarity and purity of your boy soprano voice, just down a bit and with Bryn Terfel added on at the bottom.

@@AkselRykkvin And now we know what happened after the Stemmeskifte - you became a fine baritone! My husband thinks your voice-control and the 'sensitivity' of your singing is on a level with the late great Jussi Bjorling - even though he was a tenor - because your voice is rich in 'timbre'!

Hi Aksel! I am a singer at the Vienna Boys Choir in Austria and singing is too my passion. I just finished my voice changing maturity part (ofcourse voice always changes to men till the age of 22) What would you recommend me to do? I want to be a soloist and I am not sure if I shall leave „choir“ and start my singing career again because being a soloist I always wanted to be. Maby I shall start going to sing at the Opera. What do you recommend me to do? I also want to study my University in Norway because I heard its very good there. But How come did you decide to study in the UK? Also please give me sole advice where to stud, if you can. I really hope we can sing in the future together a duet perhaps. I am nearly of the same vocal range now as you are. Thanks for finding and sharing this little gem, Aksel, I wonder how many more of these priceless snippets are out there. I searched for the DVD version of this performance by the Norwegian Opera & Ballet, but sadly I couldn't find one. It would be interesting to know If it is available to buy. 👏👏
