Something to consider before trashing a VHS tape: Video content on VHS may not be available on DVD or Blu Ray, or may not be found on streaming. My YT channel has posts of videos gotten from VHS from over-the-air TV airchecks, and not found on DVDs. So, keep that in mind prior to doing a "hack" on a VHS tape cassette.

VHS tapes are not obsolete. Sure they can wear out but at least they don't skip when scratched. I do love DVDs and blu rays but I still love VHS tapes.

The tape can get dirty, twisted, indented etc etc......... sure had my fair few of messed up VHS tapes back in the day; I'll stick with DVD/blu-rays thanks!

I like this project, but I think it can go a little bigger. I wonder if the VHS cassette could be modded to contain a Raspberry pi, USB hub, and a small USB drive full of all of my legally-aquired movies and shows. I think that you would only need one more hole for the HDMI connection.

It bothers me when the title is vague and doesn't say anything about what the end result actually is. Also a few people have already noted that this is less of a "hack" and more of a modification to the casing to integrate other tech into it. Please, if it isn't a hack, don't call it one.

Spotted a slight problem: you've gone from an USB 3.0 cable to an USB 2.0 one (4 wires).....not ideal. It WILL work, but it's pointless if you're using it on a 3.0 port. Interesting project though.

Have thought about using old vhs tapes as project boxes before, you can seal up the big holes in the bottom using plastic from the spools and they're pretty roomy once you have everything out of there.

Why not do it the other way? Where the USB Ports are hidden by the top lid on the cassette tape. Then it's not too out of place looking and it's hidden away and less noticeable rather than them being right at the bottom. It just made more sense in my opinion

An interesting project. Wouldn't you want to, perhaps use some of that hot glue to nail the hub down inside the case? It would appear to have a good chance of sliding around in there, unless you were extremely precise in cutting the notches in your reels.

In My Elementry School Library, there is some Books that comes with a VHS tapes. I don't go to that School anymore so I'm not sure if they're still around but, I like to think so and I remember using one which this was when I was in 2nd grade. Now I'm 8th grade and yes, I have a VCR and big collections of VHS tapes. Don't judge Me.

The point is even if the board supports usb 3.0 it still needs the four additional wires to deliver the better speed compared to usb 2.0 or 2.1

Of course it depends on the cable, why would there be different cables otherwise? You need the extra TX/RX pair for more throughput.

i was thinking that he basically took a USB Hub and used it to make another one which is bigger and bulkier when he would usually take something big and bulky and make it thinner and smaller.

what do u do with vhs tapes. USE them.... where as everyone loves dvds . scrach a dvd and its useless. vhs tape snaps. u splice it back together and it works usually fine.

As a Gen Z’er I just use streaming services. But seeing a VHS 📼 tapes makes me nostalgic for all the cartoons I had on VHS. Also watched the Star Wars Original Trilogy on VHS. (My brother still has the Trilogy set at his place so very nostalgic to look at when I visit). Nice video!
