Designer Paolo Mori and publisher Hurrican released a Spiel des Jahres nominated game. In 2013 it was called Augustus, alternately Rise of Augustus, and in 2020 it was called Via Magica. Let's compare the two, side-by-slide, with my semi-charming commentary.

As part of our teacher training last semester for teaching Latin in secondary schools in Germany we were asked to visit a school and run station stands of 'play like the Romans' . We had Augustus out and it proved a hit (as did Knizia's Imperium). I wish I'd seen your video on Chariot Race before then. Incidentally the names of the Romans used in Augustus are super weird. They seem real at first glance (very distinctive elements of the names). But none of them are actually real / the famous ones. They just seem like it.

Rise of Augustus is a lovely game. Played it a bunch of time. Via Magica has one rule change I don't like. When two players fill their card at the same, the first one to yells "bingo!" (don't remember the exact words) wins the bonus AND picks first. RoA had a better system with the card number rule (lowest card goest first/wins bonus).

Hmm, I read the rules for both, I hadn't noticed that!

@@BoardGems In the french version of the rules, it states that if two or more players say "Incantum!" at the same time the person at the left of the Catcher goes first.
