You’ll love it! It’s the best color by mid-Summer. I’ve seen a photo of one that was over 25 feet tall! It must have been really old! 🤩

Thanks! Wow, some years we never even see snow here!! We even still have a few trees hanging on to their leaves. Hope you guys do well over the winter! We know working on projects in the cold can be challenging! (Ha, and sometimes you need warmer temps for things to set 🤪)

Am really enjoying this tour! Awesome video and descriptions of each tree, how they’re doing, and why. Also LOVE the video inserts of the same tree at different times of this year. I have begun planting Japanese maples and conifers in my garden this past year, and just placed another order for ‘24, including several of the varieties you are showing here. It’s so helpful to see these specimens and hear your descriptions as I ponder the best placement for each plant. Thank you so much for this video!

The Pixie at 40:40 is to wide for me (small garden) prefer other one, so i strictly look for ones where the split is not that low (the lower the split the more open top shape is promoted i've seen so far). Ofc not to high. between 40--60% of the maximum length is where the splitting should start, and the splits should have a strong wooden support, (not where they could start to weep later). Thought pixie (never mind - confused it with Shaina wich is more round) was more a 'ballshape' and skeeters broom very upright. Will see what my skeeter's does. Maybe gotta buy a pixie, it seems to colour better in fall. Tyvm for video, you two are naturals at loving garden and talking about it.

I actually appreciate your showing that Sango Kaku. I have one that looks similar (except alittle more bunny-ears or old-broom -like). At first I thought deer was eating off the top, then I learned about Black Stem disease and thought it had that... but I don't see any other evidence of that. I did realize I planted it too deep and corrected that. So at least I can see that not everything is always instagram perfect and might not likely be something that warrants murder, lol. This was it's first year in the ground and maybe alot of sun for its first year. Maybe it's normal for them to go through awkward developmental period. Either way... thanks for showing that one.

Sure thing - we’re glad you found it useful. We try to share our honest opinion on what’s going on - everything definitely isn’t always positive for all of the trees. Since this video, we decided to move our questionable Sango Kaku & cut off any bad looking areas in the process. We’ll see if it likes it’s new spot better or not. We’ll show where we moved it in our winter garden tour - we’re just waiting for our camellias to bloom. 🙂

Oridono nishiki needs periodic twig pruning in order to bring out its wonderful pink new growth and white and green variegated leaves. Try it and You may be really pleased.

We’ve thought about it - I think we’ll probably just let it grow. We may start taking off lower branches soon though, so, maybe it’d be worth a shot. 🙂

Thanks for the update. I was wondering if you saw any color in Emerald Lace. I have one and I think it's beautiful in the summer but don't notice much fall color, but I've seen other videos and photos where it does show fall color.

I’m sure it had some, but it wasn’t a show-stopper in the Fall. However, our Fall colors usually aren’t too great in general. We typically go for more summer interest, which this one has in spades (though, it also gets huge!). We’ve relocated it just a few weeks ago - we’re looking forward to seeing it in it’s new space 🙂

Sorry, we aren’t willing to share this information on a public space like RU-vid. The closest we’ll get here is just Southeast USA in zone 8a. If this was a more private space, we’d be happy to share. However, for of our own privacy and safety, we prefer to not share more information in a public setting like this. My Acer Japonicum Aconitifolium had amazing fall colours, at end of summer the tips became red (i love the green red in single leaf combination) then it turned red, then it turned pumpkin orange. This was 2 months of fall colour, start fall was super dry but it started raining a lot, then all leaves in one day were gone (like 7th day of rain). Reminds me of the most colourful 'Meigetsu' that you showed in video (the first one). Question with those massive trees around, dont you have to dig hard (in root nestings) to be able to plant these trees? :) Also does this mean the Japanese maple in your garden (close to big trees) have root competition?

Thanks for watching! To your first question - yes - our dirt is very solid & hard in general (mostly clay). We have to use a pickaxe to dig, or loosen the dirt. The shovel is mostly for moving material, not for digging. Ha, we’re a bit jealous of other areas where it’s as easy can be to dig in dirt. 😂 Also, yes, nearly anywhere we dig there are roots. If you go to some of our earlier shed build videos, you’ll see us have to cut some fairly large ones. For tree planting, when we find a big root digging, we just go for another spot instead. As far as root competition - yep, all the plants get to deal with it. The Japanese maples seem to be fine with it, some camellias really don’t do well though with it. We also mostly have large poplars which aren’t the worst for root competition (the worst would be oaks). On the bright side, the extremely high canopy provides some wonderful filtered shade to the plantings throughout the day. 🙂

We’re in zone 8a in the South USA. We don’t get too specific on location for our own safety (can’t be too safe). Blue Star can be found at most nurseries - I believe Georgia may have its own native variety as well. 🙂 Thanks for watching!

I don't think your ukigumo will have the white leaves. I've been talking in my JM group to everyone I can find that lives in the hot summer south. NO ONE has ever gotten the white leaves in spring. Apparently, ukigumo needs a bit more winter and less heat to display its glory. Still, they are great for that wonderful yellow fall color.

Hmmm, we saw one at someone’s garden in the south one time in June, and it was blazingly white and huge! 20-25’ & 20’ spread would be my guess. But, that could have been an outlier, or they only get that way once they’re a really big size. He said it got maybe two hours of sun.

Yep, in the south, zone 8a. We don’t share our actual location for privacy reasons. For what it’s worth, our temperatures in the summer range from low 90’s, some days mid-90’s, and some days around 100. 🙂

How much sun can a Jordan take?

It depends on your zone/climate. For us in 8a with highs around the mid-to-high 90’s in the summer, it’s happiest at 4-6 hours of morning sun with afternoon shade. I wouldn’t put it past 7-8 hours of sun on the high end. Also, hot afternoon will burn it. If possible, I’d have it in shade after 2pm (this can be dappled or full shade). On the other hand, summer gold, which looks fairly similar to Jordan, can tolerate 12-13 hours of direct sun, including afternoon sun. It may burn a little bit by mid-August, but overall does fairly well with more sun than Japanese maples can typically tolerate. After that, I’ve heard ‘hot blonde’ is even more heat tolerant and can tolerate even hotter summer heat.
