Vicis creates the football helmet of the future

While it's the most popular sport in the United States, football has always had a problem with concussions. Football helmets of the past have largely failed to protect football players from head traumas. Seattle company, Vicis, has been changing the football helmet landscape with an innovative new product: the Vicis ZERO1. We had the opportunity to tour Vicis' lab in Washington to take a look at their innovative product.
Vicis CEO & Co-Founder, Dave Marver, states that the ZERO1 is much different from traditional football helmets; it deforms or yields upon impact, like a car bumper, and will rebound without causing the helmet to deform for thousands of impacts.
Vicis CMO & Co-Founder, Dr. Samuel Browd, saw the football helmet industry going down a more after-the-fact road, and saw an opportunity to improve concussion risks proactively with a new, innovative helmet.
Although Vicis has produced a disruptive product to the industry, the NFL has worked closely with the company, and the helmet has begun being used in NFL games.

Can't wait to see that technology being applied to other types of helmets, preferably cycling and motorcycle helmets. I know they're designed to break on impact while protecting your head in return, but I've never seen one that has what Vicis call the reflex layer. That's like the next step in dispersing energy and momentum generated from impact.

FINALLY, someone who at least sounds like they understand the PHYSICS 101 subject of elastic vs. Non-elastic collisions. Right now all the energy between two players heads colliding is non-elastic i.e. no energy is absorbed like in a car bumper or more so when a air bag is deployed. That energy is transfered nearly 100% into the head of the player and causes the brain to slosh backwards and then forwards in the brain's cranial vault. Since football doesn't have sharp objects as hockey has, one could make a rubbery outer coating that needn't be hard to prevent spot impacts that could pierce the helmet. In this design, the energy from colliding helmets would be disipated by the softer rubber absorbing the shock(energy) before it reaches the brain. The reason these helmets arent available immediately is that if they were, the Players Union would sue the owners for playing in a dangerous environment; which they did and do. The players would, rightfully sue for billions and billions of dollars and end the NFL as it's known. So players will keep sustaining slow brain damage leading to early onset dementia and Ahlzheimers and/or immediate permanent damage in the form of brachial plexus injuries("stingers") and cervical spine damage/paralysis.

If you really want to pre ent the most common type of brain injury; coup-countrecoup i.e. the sloshing of tbe brain back and forth in the cranium, you'd make the outer helmet MUCH more deformable and therefore capable of absorbing energy during a helmet on helmet collision. A softer outer helmet would result in an elastic collision, whereby both outer helmets of the colliding players would absorb enough energy to prevent that energy from being transfered to their respective brains. Without this energy absorbtion their brains would then be rocked to and fro in the medical term: coup-countrecoup collision in an inelastic collision. WHAT prevents you from making a SOFTER exterior of a helmet?. Fashion?. Tradition?.

It's not about what your willing to pay. It's about the NFL investing in such technology to help preserve the game and protect it's players. If each player is worth millions a year? Why wouldn't they want such technology.

Wonder if it prevents against skull fractures as the helmets commonly used now are hard to prevent from skull fractures where this seems softer just a question

Look Super Promising! Can they make it for the Pop Warner level as well, so the farming system can be in place to save football? Who are they going to make it for if kids aren't in the game by the high high school level? In our community 6 out of the 7 kids are not making the transition to tackle from flag after 10U... Parents are apprehensive about concussions.

Helmets don't stop concussions, they stop skull fractures. Concussions are caused by the brain impacting the inside of the skull after rapid deceleration. Having a flexible helmet won't prevent that.

xenteko yes it won’t but it will help it there not trying to stop concussions there trying to make it a mild concussion and the linear forces help with shock absorbsion so it’s not as bad remember brain damage costs more than a 900 dollar helmet

Cool technology but they are cost-prohibitive to smaller organizations at ~$1k a pop. We have the Xeniths for our youth program which are on their last season of use this year and will most likely be going with those for next year. They made the NFL list and the VT lists and are ~$200 or $300.

Their youth helmet are $450, but our team gets a discount bringing the price down to $430. In the Virginia Tech study of youth helmet the Zero1 youth helmet received 3 times better safety rating then the 2nd highest rated helmet. The lower the score the better. The Zero1 youth received all-time best score of 0.69 and the 2nd highest rated helmet the Zenith X2E+ received a 2.11. The 5th highest rated helmet received a 2.56. Not much difference between #2 and #5 but a huge difference between the Zero1 and the rest. The Zero1 helmet is revolutionary not evolutionary in terms of protecting from head impact and concussions. No helmet will prevent all head injuries, but the Zero1 is the best helmet available by far.

Football players should start wearing "scrum caps" like rugby players. Rugby players hardly suffer from concussions. You tend to hit the opponents harder with football helmets than scrum caps because you know your head is well protected by these well engineered helmets but your not, thereby resulting in more concussions. Use your body to tackle and not your head.

Smart of you to get a softer on the OUTSIDE helmet. It's all about softening the outside of the helmet to be the first line to absorb the shock and energy to the brain. To make a fancy coating INSIDE the helmet is ridiculous. One wants to protect the brain from the coup-countrecoup injury i.e. the brain sloshing forward and back inside the cranium. The VERY hard carbon fiber and plastic outer shells of common, popular helmets do NOT prevent this MOST COMMON of football head injuries. In the NFL players who sustained concussions wore a soft foam covering that went over their helmets. This absorbed energy BEFORE it entered the helmet and transfered to the players brain. I remember Thurman Thomas of the Bills scoring and then helping a lineman apply his foam "cap" to his normal helmet. They WORK!. But look "dumb", unless you or your son is playing and/or has had a concussion. Given the number of NFL players leaving in fear of brain damage, I wouldn't and many of those former prod don't let their sons play contact football. Period. American football is simply too hard an the human brain, given the helmets currently available.

Once again....this company is not addressing the problem of what causes a concussion. This helmet will probably help prevent skull fractures but does ABSOLUTELY NOTHING to prevent the brain from slamming into the skull during impact, which is what causes concussions.

The helmets have nothing to do with concussions,it's the sudden stop of the brain inside the cranial cavity,now if they can pad the inside of someone's head,then I will be impressed!

You're very wrong. Just like crumple zones in cars reduce a person's inertia in a vehicle prior to hitting the windshield/dashboard, a helmet that yields, deforms, and absorbs the blow will also reduce inertia.

Reduce, yes, but eliminate? Not even remotely. The amount of absorption those helmets provide is likely quite minimal. I'm not saying they're pointless, since even a small reduction is still better than nothing, but the rhetoric about these helmet is overblown to say the least.

It's not just the head impacts that cause brain injuries. It's ANY sudden deceleration, which means virtually all impacts. Two 250lb men running into each other at high speed is going to cause the brain to slosh inside the skull even if their helmets never touch each other or hit the ground. I can see this helmet allowing even HARDER impacts. Just like the push for sunscreen use in Australia caused an INCREASE in skin cancer: it allowed people to spend more time in the sun. The more football helmets have improved the more brain injuries have increased.

This helmet may not work as well as people expect. Good intentions but poor engineering. Pushing down axially on hard rubber plugs which are inside this helmet give immediate strength until they buckle at which point there is a huge energy release (not good). See 1:55 mark of this video (which is ironcally a portion of Vicis own video) and you will notice head lunge in relation to helmet. Show less REPLY

I think the clip you're talking about is a comparison shot. The trial shown with head lunge is showing that of helmet's used today, the lunging you saw on the right view, vs. the new helmet with minimal lunge on the left.
