Jon Vickers, only 29 at the time, sings the part of Canio in I Pagliacci. This is the last 6 minutes of the opera, from a staged performance taped in a Montreal studio, one of a series of live broadcasts from the CBC. The conductor is Otto Werner-Mueller. The Nedda is Czech soprano Eva Likova -- also a ballerina, here she dances in toe shoes for her stage part as Columbine.
"I find Canio one of the truest tragic characters that I've ever played" said Vickers. "There's a void of emptiness and heartache that is far beyond tears."
