Victor Two Spring Motor Rebuild Part 5 

Can't thank you enough for this series of videos, I just rebuilt my VV-90 (S/N: 67596) this weekend and it sounds great. Hope to come across another that I can refurbish in the future. What a great piece of functional history to own and enjoy.

Absolutely outstanding! I followed you through this entire process and successfully refurbished my 1928 VV 4-40X. The only difference was my spring, which had a tooth and a groove which made it very easy to know which way to load... They can only go one way. I'm astounded at how quiet my baby plays now. No more noise and no more "CLUNK". Thank you so much for your time and effort. You absolutely inspired me to tackle this myself and now I feel like an expert. I'm forever grateful that you've taught me this skill!

Thanks for this! I was looking for a repair facility in my area. No surprisingly, there were none. After watching your videos, I’ve decided to take on this project. I’m about halfway into it and I’m confident that I’ll be able to get the machine working again. I know it was a lot of work creating these videos. Know that your efforts are appreciated.

My 1920 Victor Victrola Model VV-XI is now working as intended thanks to you. Absolutely amazing videos which show step by step how to rebuild a motor. This was my first attempt at anything like this so I just have a few things I discovered during my rebuild. First, kerosene just would not break up the black gunk that was killing this Victrola. However, two cans of chlorinated brake cleaner did the job but it wasn't easy even with that. Brake Cleaner dissolves everything right? Even with that it was kinda difficult. The 100 year old lubricant in this machine was the toughest stuff to clean up I've ever encountered period. My machine was missing the spring devider, however, it does not seem to effect the operation. Lastly, the outer spring had a repair near the center. It was rivet together very nicely though so I just proceeded to put back together and it's fine. Someone loved and used this Victrola a lot. I can tell by the wear on the springs. I'm gonna buy a spare set because I too love this machine. Sir, once again Thank You so much for your videos. You made it easy. God Bless You!

I also cleaned the governor over the weekend after it has been stuck since I first got my 1923 Camp Fone a few months ago. I removed parts of the governor, cleaned it with isopropyl alcohol, put the pieces back together and BAM! It runs perfectly as it was.

Managed to obtain a HMV 130 with the usual HMV Clonk. Saw you video and thought I would get to work today. Brilliant, its not as bad as I thought. All stripped down and cleaned. the springs came out easier than I was expecting and under control. Clean them up as they were in very sticky conditioned hard grease. I also cleaned the springs with a brillo to get the last remaining crap of the springs. As smooth as a babies bum. Assembly was quite easy as well after following your video. Good job I did as I think I would have missed the ball bearings. Repacked with grease and some light chainsaw oil. Brilliant full wind up and play and BINGO, all sorted. Thanks for the info it really helped.

Your videos have been extremely helpful to me on my project to repair my VV-90. The spring was severely overwound years ago resulting in the oval hole on the lower spring to become damaged causing the spring to slip during winding. I’m new to RU-vid but am wondering if you have a video which describes how to repair the end of a damaged spring. I haven’t been able to find one. Thank you for the videos which have enabled me to disassemble everything without breaking anything.

Hi, I have a VV-210 that I received from a relative. The cabinet is mint but the motor doesn't run at all. After watching your video, I took the drum out ( which was in backwards) and when I opened it, the top spring was missing! The #17 is stamped on the side of the drum. It is dated from about 1922-23. The only difference I noticed is that there are tabs inside the drum where the spring slides into not a rivet that sticks out like in your video. Where can I buy the springs? I want to fix this and pass it down to my son. Thank you so much for a great video and instructions!

My VV 8-4 had a 4-spring motor, but it’s slightly different than this one. Same parts, same governor, everything. But it has 2 spring barrels.

Thanks for sharing such a detailed video. It is very informative. I am wondering if a person could simply place the entire motor in a container of oil for a day so that it would get into all of the parts including the spring and rehydrate the grease. This would save a lot of trouble and time if it worked. Has anyone ever tried doing it that way? If so what were the results?

I'm having trouble getting the governor and the main spindle to operate quietly. There's a grinding noise that I just can't seem to get to go away no matter how much I adjust the governor tension. Have any suggestions?

In the final seconds of this video did the friction plate on the governor actually get lubricated? It seems like that would defeat its purpose.

The coil barrel is the easiest. I had a broken governor. Sucked a bit.

Have you tried supper lube ,synthic grease with telflon.and their sumthin oil with tellon,has none of the problems of petroleum products .

I don't ... unfortunaley. But I can tell you you aren't alone ! ^^ I have the same problem ... Have you found any solution until today I've cleaned and lubricated everything but the noise remains ...
