Anyone noticed when he talks he's still tapping with his foot. He's always in the pocket,ha. This is one of my favourite clips, anytime i need inspiration to practice i just play this, fantastic.
The more and more I play guitar, the more I realize exercises like these are so important with my bad internal tempo. Thank you for posting this video. It is not only amazing but also very instructional.
I totally agree. I play bass for about 9 years now and I use the metronome during my practice sessions more than ever. My bass teacher taught me: "The metronome tells the truth about your timing!"
I love victor...eveybody else turns the met all the way up to show off how fast they can play...Victor turns it all the way down and still blows it out of the water....Such a great player!!
Y'know, the beauty of it is, he's among the world's greatest musicians, and yet he's very humble and STILL pushes himself to improve. I think that'd command respect from anyone. Not to mention, because of this vid, metronome practice will never be boring again. Thanks for the video. ^_^
This is the reason why everyone misses their childhood, their life ahead and dreams were big and the possibilities were endless. Then people use the internet for RU-vid, Netflix, Facebook, and porn, don't get a meaningful education or acquire any useful skills, and wish they would have done everything differently.
Picked up similar teaching over at Scott Devine Academy....except the 5 over 4 exercise at the end. Victor you are one CRAZY Dude! That's in a good way.
Yooo, hi :) I have a question if you don't mind.. Is Scott Devine's Academy worth it? Im learning bass and I don't know if its really necessary to have a physical human being teaching instead of a prerecorded videos. Kindest regards :)
SBL Academy is about prerecorded and live videos, but the human part is for feedback, questions and stuff. Anyway, if you aren't sure if it's worth it, take the 14 days free trial! (God, I sound like I'm an advertiser or something)
SBL Academy is the MOST LIVE forum for bass instruction you will find on the internet. I was with Nathan East..he will respond to videos you send him. BUT: SBL has LIVE seminars almost every Monday from these bassists Steve Lawson(solo performance),Ian Stewart(afro-cuban tumbao and ghost notes), Rich Brown(playing in odd time signatures)Todd Johnson,Damian Erskine. Danny "Mo" Morris(Berkeley), Phill Mann(Jeff Berlins Players School of Music), Berhard Lackner, Ariane Capp, Rufus Philpot, Steve Jenkins, Ed Friedland, Divinity Roxx, Sean Hurley, and, Victor Wooten will soon be one of those. Scott does LIVE Facebook hours almost weekly also. There is also like N8 a weekly review by Scott of the student submitted videos for that week. Man, unless you are going to spend a fortune on airfare you will never get to all these guys in one place..
1:13 IS SOME DRUG SHIT! I heard that about 500+ times in the past year, and it's not an exaggeration! I'm still having chills that funky shit is funky as fuck so I can't even describe it. That's really fuck'standing!
It's much more fulfilling - both for a sense of accomplishment and for learning purposes - to transcribe it yourself. It takes time and practice to get good at something
that slight shift of timing he does with the metronome is BADASS and beyond amazing...maybe i'm easily amused, but victor is still the man, regardless...
Such an amazing bassist, him and others ,like Stanley Clarke, really do raise the bar for others. I wish my voice could be melodic and on time when I talked >.>
3:33. That's interesting. The LCD graphic shows a 'needle' sweeping back and forth the way mechanical metronomes do, but the beeps are at the ends, when the needle changes direction. On a mechanical metronome, it clicks as the needle sweeps across the middle. This always took a bit of getting used to, as the click was heard when the needle was moving fastest. Korg has made the visual and the audio make sense.
Man....this is awesome. I'd heard of doing a lot of this stuff, and I've even tried it (although I don't practice it, which I really should start doing) but man, the four count over five thing was AWESOME! Such a great concept. I'm definitely going to be trying this, and I will get it. It may take a while, but I'll be better because of it.
Good for you! the world needs more bassists! I've got two recommendations for ya if u dig this. One is the Victor instructional dvd "Groove Workshop" and the other is his book "The Music Lesson". Both are completely eye opening and great for bassists of any level. Cheers!!
@justAlex666 he uses the metronome as guidance.. he is not cheating because his foot does not move by itself.. he is good enough to keep the tempo own his own.. he does not need a metronome anymore this is just advertisement for Korg's product line.. Something WE would buy to eventually develop timing as good as Vic's
I mis-read the title of this video. I came here looking forward to hearing his enlightened view of possessions... Good grooves, though, so nothing lost 8-)
