Going towards the Brontë sisters, I spent years of my life adoring Wuthering Heights by Emily Brontë and sort of ignoring the existence of the books written by Anne and Charlotte Brontë. In 2018/2019 I read Agnes Grey, but I'm yet to finish reading it. This year I acquired Jane Eyre and this is one of the best aquisitions in years, relying on the fact that I love reading it. Currently I'm nine chapters into Jane Eyre, because it's a chunky book and I feel exceptionally compelled to advance in my reading carefully. Loved this video of yours, especially the parts in which you mentioned the Brontë sisters.

I’m doing a Victorian module in my English degree at the moment! Also loving your hair! My favourite Victorian novel is probably The Tenant of Wildfell Hall or David Copperfield (also love the adaptations of it). Stay safe xx

if you don't mind audiobooks, the Phoebe Reads a Mystery podcast is currently doing chapters of Jane Eyre. If you can get over a British classic in an American accent it's pretty good!

How have I not known about Victober! Love this idea. Re a Victorian letters/diary I recommend ‘every girl’s duty’ which is the diary of a Victorian girl called Alice Miles. Fascinating read. She is a compelling person, and it’s a fascinating glimpse into the mind of a Victorian girl on the marriage market.

"The Speckled Band" is definitely one of the more scary Sherlock Holmes stories! I had an experience with it I still think of whenever I hear the title. In 2012, I and a friend went to a small German event for Sherlock Holmes fans & the first evening ended with an outdoor reading of this story, which was, of course, super atmospheric & super creepy. Afterwards I went back to my hotel room which I shared with my friend. We went to sleep on during the night I woke up due to a super creepy whistling noise, it sounded just like somebody was standing in the room and whistling!! It repeated several times with a few minutes in between and I was getting more and more scared because the whistling from the story was all too fresh in my mind. FINALLY my friend woke up and it turned out the sound was ........ the whatsapp notification sound. She had forgotten to turn off her phone for the night and I, who did not own a smartphone back then, had somehow never heard that sound before. :'D

I'm reading both editions of Frankenstein concurrently so I'm already reading Victorian lit. I also plan to read Shirley, though. I think it's very relevant to our current Luddite times.

Hi, I like your videos very much and I would like to suggest that a list of the books mentioned be added to the description box. Since English is a foreign language to me, sometimes it is difficult to understand an author´s name and some book covers are difficult to read through the screen.

does anybody have recommendations for spooky/scary/gothic poetry? (other than poe) genuinely can't read or watch real horror but i would love some slightly spine-tingling poetry!!! also i'm currently reading the professor, because i read villette a couple months ago and decided i wanted to read all the bronte novels, and, having gone in with no expectations (just because i wasnt specifically interested in it as an individual book), i'm enjoying it a lot! its fun to notice how much of it was borrowed later for villette

I'm planning Jane Eyre or The Tenant of Wildfell Hall or The Woman in White... What are your thoughts on these books?
@lindaharrison3240
@lindaharrison3240 4 года назад
Ugh do NOT read Woman in White. Wilkie Collins' style is long and drawn out. I believe a living professional writer said something like Wilkie Collins never met a sentence he couldn't expand by tenfold. He drones on and on and one. The Tenant of Wildfell Hall was another snoozefest. I couldn't even finish that one. I vote for Jane Eyre.

@@Claire_Fenby I have decided to go Bronte Sisters for Victober. As much as I want to do and follow the challenge I have to modify because of work as well. But thanks. I'm doing Jane Eyre, The Tenant of Wildfell Hall and then rereading Wuthering Heights one of my favorites or maybe listen to an audio book

If you like true crime then surely you should read On Murder as Considered One of the Fine Arts by Thomas de Quincey, only it was written in 1827, so ten years too early for Victober
