Victorinox Ranger: Pocketful of Practicality

A quick review of the Victorinox Ranger. This 5 layer, 91mm Swiss Army Knife has a great range of tools in a relatively compact package. I do notice this one in my pocket more so than others I own due to the increased size and weight. However, this is a small price to pay for the capabilities it offers. As usual with Victorinox quality and value are both high.
Tools on the Ranger are: large blade, small blade. can opener with small screwdriver, corkscrew, reamer, wood saw, chisel, toothpick, tweezers, hook, bottle opener with screwdriver and wire stripper, scissors, nail file with metal file, metal saw, and nail cleaner, and a fine screwdriver.
The Ranger is primarily designed to suit outdoors use. However, if you don't mind a little extra bulk in your pocket it makes for a very capable EDC tool. Almost everyone has heard of Swiss Army Knives, and in my experience they are less likely to get a negative reaction than other types of folding knife. If you need a tool you can use around others without causing an unreasoning panic, something like this may be the thing to have.

May I suggest a SUPER easy way to open a wine bottle with a Swiss Army Knife corkscrew? Simply lay the bottle on a chair and pull up the cork. (never on a table but a chair). The height of the bottle, plus the angle of your arm and elbow will help you yank the cork out extremely easily. However, when the bottle is higher up, such as on a table, you seem to "fight" with the bottle, it's much harder. Let me know later.

Indeed. The Ranger is the perfect pick for the ideal EDC pocket pal. It’s my choice as well. It’s all about adding the metal file. Nice job here. Thanks.

Great knife! I know this is an old upload but for whoever wondering, the metal file is the one on the same side as the victorinox logo (it has some slightly bigger pattern than the nail file.).

Two uses for the toothpick: 1) picking teeth. It really does work, once a bloke gets over his germophobia, 2) Cleaning the pocket lint out of the nooks and crannies of the knife. The chisel is for push-cutting. One can't always whittle with a blade; there's not always enough room. The hook, I've used more than once for pulling wires out of nooks and crannies. Admittedly, not that often. My only beef with the Ranger is that it's 5 layers, and still doesn't manage to have a decent Phillips. Check out the Explorer Plus. You would give up the saw and file though. What I do is if I'm going outside, I grab the Trekker or Soldier, 3 layers, with saw and a big blade. If not, Explorer or Ramber.

They are awesom for EDC as they wont scare the public as it has a stigma attached where people associate it to scouts. I used to always get looks when I used my Leatherman Charge yet people don't even look twice when I use my Victorinox. Very good choice for EDC.

Great vid again. The best all around Vic in my opinion. I added the mini-screwdriver for in the corkscrew to my Ranger to make it complete. However I'm planning to try to EDC a Vic Camper in combination with a Leatherman Juice S2 in the future. I wish Leatherman would make a pure single pliers tool, because every tool on a Vic is better than on a Leatherman except for the pliers in my opinion. Kind regards from Amsterdam again

Best thing I've found for the toothpick is to loosen cable ties that you've overtightened or need to remove it without cutting it. The pick is useful for unhooking the catch so you can feed the tie back out. Also, the hook is useful for attaching springs that have become loose eg trampoline or put-up bed

You're right. They are so non threatening that folks have actually asked to have a look at mine. Many people have never seen or handled a real SAK. It's a good way to spread the word that carrying a knife is not something evil.

I have been carrying my old Swiss Champion in my pocket for over 30 years. Much larger than that one, and after a few years you get used to the extra size and get a few more tools to boot. I figure that I use it over twice a day, so over 30 years it has only come in usefull arountd 22,000 times so far, but it still in good nick and has got a few more years left in it.

Every time I feel the SwissChamp or Cybertool 41 is too big, I start thinking about what tools I wouldn't use. I invent a custom knife and it end up being a Swisschamp with the fish scaler replaced with the bit driver, small blade replaced with the nail file from the Sportsman. Which would of course be even wider than the SwissChamp. Since there is no single ideal knife, collecting them all is the only option.

Good vid. Nice Vitorinox. I just ordered the Explorer Plus. I plan to EEC the Leatherman TXi and the Explorer. They will cover all my uses. I like the Victorinox Swiss Army knives. They are very useful for light tasks and they don't take up a lot of room, like the big multi tools. I have a Champ which I like. The pliers are a bit weak on it. So I'll try the thinner Explorer in the pocket and the Leatherman tool in a belt pouch. Always enjoy your vids. Keep them coming,. Thanks

Nice video thanks. I watch a lot of these videos on RU-vid about SAKs and multi tools. Next size up I believe is the Swiss Champ and there is also a Cyber knife tool that has more tools. It is interesting every video I have seen like this, the presenter has nicked themselves with the knife. Just bought one of these Rangers for my collection. The hook is also known as the parcel carrier, is supposed to be useful for tightening bicycle spokes and lifting hot Billie style lid handles. The chisel would make a good pry bar. Agree with the nail groove on the awl. Victorinox should change the location of that on all of their knives that have an awl.

You should put a pin in the small hole at the base of the corkscrew. I used the metal saw (on the file) to cut a lock, so I can say it is very capable. Thanks for the review!

Hey Mark, good to see your SAK collection growing. It's fun to see what tools you consider useful or useless. For me the toothpick and corkscrew are two of the most used tools on my SAKs, whereas I hardly ever use the awl and the tweezers. One good use for the hook might be taking a hot pot off the fire, like with the notch on the Buck Hoodlum. Never tested it though. How the chisel on the back is used properly remains a mystery to me too. Let me know if you find out. ;-)

I used to carry the Vic Ranger a lot - loved it, but I got rid of it because it was just a bit too big. If you don't mind that big chunk of metal in your pocket, you might want to consider the Wenger EVO S52 - it's the same width as the Ranger, but it loses the metal file and adds a nail file, a locking blade, an ergonomic grip AND a pair of pliers. Also, in my view, Wenger's can opener and scissors are better than the Victorinox versions. I found it hard to move from Victorinox to Wenger, because let's face it, Vics have the better logo and more name recognition, but I think Wenger makes (or made) better knives. They've been swallowed up by Vic now, but many of their knives are still available brand new.

I agree it is a bit bulky, but I don't mind and still carry it a lot. Actually it's in my pocket now. Thanks for the comment my friend, best wishes..

AussieMark909 Aye Mate and greetings from America. An outstanding review of the Vic Ranger ! Thanks for throwing the Standard dimensions in for us Yanks. LOL Although I agree with Mr. Cooper, it's just a bit too big for pocket carry, but I would consider belt pouch carry for this model. It's got an awful lot of useful tools, to just write it off for sure ! As far as SAK's, I personally don't own anything thicker than a 3 layer. I've stuck with the Vic's, but Mr. Cooper is correct, there are some advantages to the Wenger's. I only hope Vic will incorporate some of those options now or parallel the line and not do away with the Wenger's.

Hey Mark just wanna say I love your videos as they are always informative, also I would like to ask your opinion. I have a camper and love it but it just feels lacking to me for some reason, do you think the Ranger makes a good EDC pocket knife or is it too large for picket carry in your opinion? Cheers
@AussieMark909
@AussieMark909 9 лет назад
I have the Camper and like it too. However, in general I prefer the Ranger for it's range of tools. The price is that it is bulkier in the pocket, but for me not a big deal. It's down to personal choice, if you don't mind the bigger size I think you'd be happy to carry the Ranger. Best wishes, Mark.
