The blade steel isn't 440. It is blade: X55CrMo14, tools: X39Cr13, springs: X20Cr13. The blade steel that Victorinox use is steel that they get made special for them.
My favorite 91 mm is the Ranger. Tied for second place is the fieldmaster and the Huntsman I'm also a fan of the camper and the farmer. In the 111 mm models I prefer the one hand open Trekker and in the bigger knives I prefer the ranger grip 78
The Super Tinker is in my pocket at all times. However, when camping/hiking, the Ranger is what I carry. The chisel has become an integral part of making kindling for the fire. Though I have only needed the metal saw a few times, it was very handy. I carry short lengths of PVC and when I found myself needing 2 more than I had, the metal saw went through that sch. 40 like butter. And, with some work and patience, it will cut through a 16d nail. The single edge file is good on fingernails. My Ranger is my favorite SAK. Good video. Thanks.
I have basically the same knife plus a pair of pliers, it's called handyman. Now with that one layer more, this is on the edge for me to carry every day. But i am a lot out in the woods, and i love the pliers to take a hot pot from the fire. Nice review!
I've used the metal file once for cutting an aluminum tent pole, making the tent easier to set up. The pole length had been bothering me for days, finally I decided to cut about an inch off and used the file section to clean the edges up. I also used the scissors and file to trim my nails a few times, when trimming became an immediate necessity. The 91mm Ranger is always part of my backpacking kit, while the 91mm Explorer is in the tool kit on my touring bicycle.
I really like the Rambler. The only thing is it's a 53mm knife, the same size as a classic. The Ranger has all of the tools on a Rambler. I want to get a Ranger, so I can mod it, and have a 91mm Rambler.
Although I wish this came with a Phillips instead of the corkscrew, I reckon it would make a great EDC paired up with a small pair of pliers, for example the Knipex Cobra, this would provide the same toolset as a complete multitool like the Leatherman Wave. The small flathead on the can opener will deal with most Phillips screws.
@@duanebledsoe7566 I know but tbh if I look at the Handyman - and I have done - I just tell myself what the heck get a Swisschamp because the difference in thickness is not all that much proportionately, just to have the inline Phillips, also the pen is a bonus, although I can't see myself needing the magnifying glass & fish scaler all that much. Tough decision! But yeah the Handyman would make sense as I've been eyeing up both the Tinker Deluxe and the Ranger as an inbetween size SAK i.e. a bit smaller than the Swisschamp, it has all the tools of them both. End of the day 9 times out of 10 the can opener works on Phillips screws
@@simonh6371 yeah I use the can opener as a Philips. I’ve ran into a couple of screws though that I couldn’t turn with it, unless I was willing to force them, which I didn’t want to do for fear of damaging my can opener. To me the Swiss Champ looks a lot wider than the Handyman, but maybe that’s because I see the Handyman as the absolute largest knife I’d want to carry. What’s funny is I don’t especially want a really wide knife but I’ve considered carrying more than one smaller one to get all the tools that I think I want or need. I wish they still made the Master Craftsman (Handyman with a Philips). If they did I’d grab it up in a hurry. I don’t really need the inline Philips. I only have an occasional need for one, so the back tool version would be just fine for me.
I've used it (the metal saw) to cut off a bent u-bolt on the bottom of my friends car that was dragging on the ground and leaving sparks after we hit a deer that was laying in the middle of the road (it had already been hit by another car)... Got us out of a rough spot.
We were doing a community project, I was sharpening the shovels right before we started and I dozens of people looking like what are you doing. A file is priceless.
Be prepared for what? Why not always carry an umbrella, since it might rain. Or sunscreen since you might get a sunburn? The list is endless. I wouldn't take advice from a scouting motto. Victorinox products are about status, and overpriced to give them prestige.
I am using a fairly cheap model every single day. If you are not finding a use for it, don't cary one, but don't call names the people, who need and use them daily. Also, the price for most models is very good given the quality you get and compared to other brands.
