Sharpe takes part in the Battle of Toulouse, which marks the conclusion of the Peninsular War. On the opposing side, we find French General Calvet and Sharpe's archenemy, Ducos, who holds responsibility for Napoleon's treasury. Amidst the conflict, Sharpe comes face-to-face with Ducos and brings disgrace upon him, yet mercifully allows him to flee unharmed.

Abandoned by his wife, he breaks out of prison and goes in search of the truth on a perilous journey across France, pursued by both the British and the French.
