While Hitler's Germany begins its decline, Mussolini's Italy ends. Eventually, as Naples and Rome are bombed, the Italians surrender. But there is still a slow ruinous campaign (Salerno, Cassino, Anzio) until final victory is achieved by the liberation of Roma, where Romans celebrate freedom waving American flags, and the Pope addressing the audience...

I was 11when the allies entered Rome. Remember the soldiers marching by, Think it was June 4 1944. I was an adopted British boy; had a British passport. Had been adopted by the Secretary of the Fascist party in London and his British wife around 1936. We all left for Italy in 1939, where my adoptive father became director of the Agenzia Stefani. (Listed in the Stefani's roster of directors) We did well, considering the circumstances. Consistently, as I watch documentaries from this period, victory was by the skin of our teeth and the cracking of the ULTRA code.

General Mark Clark went for Rome instead of cutting off the German army, which was fleeing north toward the Alps. Clark made a quick headline for "taking" Rome, but he let the Germans move north and prepare another stout defensive line. The war in Italy dragged on another year. It should not have happened that way. Clark was wrong to divert his forces for Rome. Rome belonged to the Allies whether Clark occupied it or not.

In truth the Canadians were 1st into Rome. They came up from the Liri valley, with Canadian scouts entering Rome, then leaving it to the Americans. The Americans were all wrapped up in getting to Rome for the Photo op, allowing the Germans to escape north. Sort of upset those in the 8th army.

Anzio is such a word steeped in American Army history. The general officers erred greatly by having the men dig in. The men got trapped on the beach, forced to pay for some dumb GO mistake about not claiming the high ground. Does anyone know who that rat's name was? All I know, as a grunt is that having to survive in a fighting position is not no life at all. Still, The Americans were victorious at Anzio

I have read that a certain US general delayed things which gave the Germans time..and that Clark was ordered to by pass Rome but he did not- perhaps he wanted a a bit of glory for himself..who knows.
@coleparker

I believe that you are right. I think what was on Clark's mind was that, the English Troops would march into Rome first, and that with the D-Day invasion, the Italian Campaign would become a side show.
@jmad627

I read the same thing. Rome wasn't all that important strategically.
@lololomo5484
@lololomo5484 4 года назад
@@jmad627 As I said above, Rome belonged to the Allies even if they did not occupy it. General Clark wanted a headline and he got it. But many allied soldiers had to die over the next year because the Germans regrouped north of the Eternal City and fought like devils. Clark COULD have cut off the Germans, but went for Rome and the headline. The rest is history, and needless death.

The 36th Div. never forgave him for the debacle that cost so many lives of the Texas Div. men. He was never welcomed at any of the reunions. Although he was the first US commander to take an enemy capitol, that glory was overshasowed within 24 hours by the D-Day landings. I understand that West Point uses the documentary film as a "how NOT to" mount an attack.

@@AmericanIdiot7659 - The series was aired in 1952 so I suspect the narrative was somewhat slanted in our favor, such as omitting the fact that Halsey went chasing a ghost fleet and left the Philippine landing beaches unprotected, which caused a small force of jeep carriers and destroyer escorts to slug it out with Japanese battleships (Taffey-3). There were several other incidents which were either glossed over, or completely omitted which reflected badly on the commanders involved- like MacArthur failing to take any action at all for at least 12 hours after the Pearl Harbor attack, which caused the loss on most of his air power-but we needed a "hero" so he was never court-martialed as he (and Halsey) should've been, if they didn't have friends in very high places.

In seventy years the producers of movies haven't learned that "background" music should be in the background. I have seen about half of this and cannot watch (and listen to) any more. Lower the volume and I cannot understand the narration. That's my thumbs down.
