I loved the "magic" of Cedar Point in the 80s. I remember not being able to sleep the night before going to CP because I was so excited. I still enjoy it today, but not like back then!
@@deborahchapman2130 Hell, I was 26-years-old when this was filmed and I remember when the log ride was where the raptor is now near the Blue Streak. My first time at Cedar Point was when I was 8 in 1964 and they still had the Stage Coach ride running through the midway. No one else remembers that ride with REAL horses I am a dedicated (ACE) roller coaster rider now.
Wow... I worked at Cedar Point for three summers, starting in ‘86, and the log ride was the first ride I worked. Seeing that blonde kid at 0:21 takes me back!!! Hearing the sounds, chatter, carousel music... I remember making eye contact with loads of park guests, wondering what was going on in their lives. I can almost feel the summer heat on my poly/cotton uniform. Feel the random splashes of the cold water. Smell the fragrance of the nearby Belgian waffle stand. Looking forward to shift’s end, going back to the employee dorms to relax after a long day. Best job I ever had. Thank you so much for loading this video. I love it...!
It's funny. Time is a thief. You don't realize how valuable this sort of family video is until time has done what it does. Parents and grandparents grow old and pass on. Children grow up. Culture changes. Old beloved rides and attractions are torn down and replaced with new ones. Thank you for this trip down memory lane. This was the Cedar Point of my childhood and although I miss so much of what I just got to see again in your video, my kids love going to Cedar Point and hopefully their kids.
A by gone era that was so much fun! Glad I got to experience those times and back in the 70’s to! People today have no idea what CP used to be like. I have so many memories from that time, and will always cherish them!
Growing up in the 80’s, I remember my parents saving all the money they could to take us to Cedar Point. It was our yearly family vacation, and I loved every minute of it. A few weeks ago at my dad’s memorial service, in the slide show my dad was with us as kids at Cedar Point. Such fond memories!!!
Some of the best footage from that area I've seen. This was before the coaster wars. I miss most of what is shown in this video. They really need to put in a new dark ride and more family friendly rides. Heck I miss the rug slide. At least that's what we called it.
Though was start of Coaster Wars/Rides. CP always tops Tallest/Fastest/Longest in this area!. Cork Screw 1976, Gemini 1978. Wildcat 1979. And this yr: Demon Drop 1983
Wow 1983 I was 18. When we where younger are parents would take us every summer. I forgot about the pirate ride. What’s funny is seeing the men/ boys with those knee high socks with the colored stripes 😂😂😂
CoasterBob62 I didn't know you actually worked there Bob! If I had to do it al over I might ahve done the same. I live close enough. But I did have a better paying Summer job working with people i liked so maybe it wasn't a bad idea :
amusement420 I had a Super 8 movie camera back then, but I was more into filming waitresses at Silver Dollar Cafe than rides!! :) It was a great 7 years. Bad pay, but made a lot of friends.
Oceana. Striker, Cocoa, Misty, and Breeze (the dolphins). Brandy and ___(?) were the sea lions. Can't believe I'm blanking on the name 😲 I worked there in '82.
Wow if the timestamp is right I was there the last week of 83. Could have been this day. Not sure. Thanks for this. It was a beautiful day in any event.
Back in the days when there was a section of the park that you could bring your own cooler with drinks and food in(my old man did). Corporate greed shut that section down and put a gift shop and food shop there now, for sure.
My dad's workplace would have company picnics here. We didn't move to Ohio until 88 (when I was 7), but I remember the picnic pavilion near Blue Streak where his company had hot dogs and burgers for the employees and their families. I'd get a clear view of the lift hill. And the log ride was right there. I remember riding it with my cousins. I was too short to ride Blue Streak and terrified of coasters (until my 20's) lol. I'm pretty sure that area is cleared out for a walkway to Blue Streak and Valravan. I think the pavilion came down around '93 when the log ride was taken out for Raptor. Now I want to go look for old park maps to find it. :) But I can attest there's no gift shops in the area except for the Valravan shop when you get off the ride. There's a resturant in the area the dark ride used to be, it's a sports bar and grill sit down resturant. I've gotten lunch and a drink there a few times.
I remember riding the calypso ride with my dad. He passed away when I was 15. Miss him, that was always a great memory of him. I remember the sky slide and kid Arthur’s court. I would spend hours there!
I was there that year. 13 years old. Gemini was only a few years old and pretty sure the Demon Drop was either brand new, or a year old. I remember the Calypso being in front of the Blue Streak. I loved the pirate ride! They also had one of my favorites back then, the San Francisco Earth Quake, or California Earthquake. I forget the exact name.
12:30 that's one of my favorite rides! its so weird seeing people from over 40 years ago ride the same ride i ride today, I knew it was a really old ride but it really puts it in to perspective
My mom took my sister and I to Cedar Point in the 1980s. We were kids then. Most of these rides my sister and I rode together. Thanks for posting this. Calypso was one of my favorite rides.
I was a sketch artist in '83 and '84, and if it was in May and rainy, it was one of the early weekends before Memorial Day, and I would have been working for sure that day.
Meh. I wouldn't say "more modestly", but I would say there is FAR more variation today. On any given day now a person could dress casually, formally, in a costume, half-naked, baggy, tight, etc.
Start on modern Amusement Parks here. Cork Screw 1976, Gemini 1978. Wildcat 1979. And this yr: Demon Drop 1983.. Cedar Point always been one the Great Ones! Been going there since 1975. Still love old rides, too bad they get retired, sold...
Great video!! I miss the aquarium and still tell people about it. That shark tank was so scary as a kid. It was soo deep, it went straight down. I wish you had posted footage of the arcade though.
I worked in Oceana with the dolphin and sea lion show. We also covered the aquarium. Walking on planks above the shark tanks was a bit unnerving! That wasn't part of my job, thankfully!
This brings back so many memories! I grew up in MI and we went to CP every year and I loved it. We even had our Junior class trip there when I was in high school. This coming year I am taking my own kids for the first time and I cant wait! I am just as excited now as I was then!! Great footage thanks for the trip down memory lane!!!
Larry, Did your father film this video with your sisters? If so I hope all are doing well. I was 23-years-old when this was recorded. With this lockdown just remembering my joyful past.
I was born in 1996. Honestly wish I could experience this video IRL, even though some of my favorite rides were made after the 90s. Just think all the kids in this video are in their 40s and 50s.
Was there that year. A young man of 21. Been going from 74 to 2019. Sad what it is today. I love coasters but to constantly take away free perks like the picnic garden etc. Its just too money driven now. And since its cashless i have no desire to go back. I will I'm sure with my kids and grandkids, but my time there is coming to an end. I used to buy season passes and go 3 or 4 times a year. I'm just not down with places going cashless and i don't go to them. The price is too high, the waits too long, the no cash, and just focusing on coasters and not much else has turned me off. Good video though.
It honestly depends on when you go. I went in 2019 during Halloweekends and it was pretty packed when I rode it, and I had to wait to get on. But there's usually huge crowds at that time, so everything has a wait, including the older and less thrilling flat rides. If you go on an off-time (my fave is late August before Labor Day) or weekdays in early June, most things are empty and even the larger rides have less of a wait. I went last week and had a 30 minute wait for Steel Vengance and Maverick (normally about 1.5 - 2 hrs)
