The chassis of the RE Himalayan 450 can break when one of the two main engine bolts loosens. But why does this happen in the first place? Is it due to incorrect torque when tightening the bolts? Could Loctite prevent them from coming loose? Or is there another underlying cause?
This is a mystery that hasn't been fully explored-until now. In this video, I dive deep into the real reason behind the bolt loosening and how it leads to chassis failure.
Watch until the end to uncover the truth-before you find yourself with a loose bolt in hand.

Most reviewers had criticised RE for using these nuts and bolts instead of allen bolts with threads embedded in the chasis frames. Interesting how those critics never got invited to forthcoming RE events. This is some serious point you have made.

I believe that to resolve a problem, you have to understand it at the first place. This is my amateur attempt to find a resolution of the chassis break problem. If my argument held any merit, then my purpose is served. Thank you for writing in. Cheers!

You can use 2 nuts instead of one. That way the bolt won't loosen up. I have observed this in many other machinery where much vibration is involved. Even you can see this type of 2 bolt hold system in many bike's swingarm ends.

Thanks for a well researched video. Few things I would like to point out (not an RE owner). Most RE dealerships are pretty lax about following company specs. I doubt that RE has even issued any specs on how to mount the crash guards on their bikes, especially if it involves removing the bolts that mount the engine to the chassis. They always end up over tightening bolts which can lead to failure. Also, I feel that the blue 243 Loctite is not the right product here. It is a medium strength thread locker meant to be used if the bolt needs to be removed and put back. I doubt that the engine/crash guard bolts ever need to be removed. Here the red, high-strength thread locker would be more appropriate. Also, the bolt with the nut should have been mounted with the crush washer and/or a split or cotter pin. This would prevent the bolt from falling off even if it comes loose from the nut. I would imagine these engineering issues would have been resolved before the bikes cam to market.
@WanderingSom
@WanderingSom Месяц назад
Hello Shubromu, Thank you for such a detailed response. You are right in mentioning that the engine bolts don't need to be taken out, unless you change the crash guard itself. The red is definitely the firmer one; however, in case I needed to take the bolt out, the bolt had to be heated up. Which also means that the engine had to be heated up externally. I also believe that a check-nut would be the best option to secure the longer bolt. Thank you once again for sharing your feedback. Cheers!

I heard in some youtube video that there is and new sop for himalayan 450 for right side pulling issue, they have to loosen all bolts where frame is holding the engine and adjust the engine angle to align with bolt holes. so service center might have to remove these bolts while performing that SOP

just something that I noticed on my Himalayan, rocking Mototorque crash guard for past 1200kms, when I was riding back from Wai to Pune started feeling some viberations on my handlebar to be precise near clutch lever and left end of handlebar which previously were absent, first thought that came to my mind was a loose bolt somewhere on the handlebar or forks, so tightend those at home, still couldnt get rid of the vibes so took her to service centre where the mechanic pointed out a developing gap between the chasis and where the crash guard was pointed, and that scared me shitless, RE guys did some bickering about this is a 3rd party crash guard you can face problems and stuff, but eventually the guy tightened the bolt the one on the right side "the bigger one" Vibrations after that are very less, havent use locktite yet, thanks for trying it out on your machine first, please keep us updated on it, meanwhile I need to keep one eye on road and one on that bolt

The bolt on the lefthand side is a 10.9 grade with a yield strength of 940 MPa (made of Stainless Steel). It looks like a M10 or a M12 bolt. Industry standards for M10 10.9 grade torque is 75Nm and for a M12 10.9 grade it would be 135Nm. I suggest you go back to RE and query them on this. Another option is to use Loctite 243 in conjuction with Nylock nuts.
@AnthosKlox
@AnthosKlox 22 дня назад
I forgot to mention... If the bolts are under torqued (45Nm as you mentioned in your video) it will definitely work loose. Also ask RE about proper flat and spring washers. I suggest a flat washer of 3mm thickness an a heavy duty spring washer. If done correctly and torqued correctly will definitely stay in place and tight despite vibrations.
@WanderingSom
@WanderingSom 20 дней назад
Wow! That's an awesome response. Thank you. The 45Nm torque is as per RE's recommendation. It's what mentioned in the manual and also advised at the floor level. Would the rubber inside the Nylock withstand heat of about 150 degrees? Thank you once again for such an insightful response. Cheers!

Motorcycle chassis flex is not measured by grade of fasteners used or by loctite. The automotive industry doesn't work on a trial and error basis either. Today in 2024 there are software like enovia and cativa v5 which simulate all the possible events such as chassis flex under braking, acceleration, under different loads and so on. I know everyone wants to sound smart like you in the RU-vid comments section and seek validation but none of you guys actually have any experience with manufacturing let alone in the automotive industry. Stop kidding yourself with torque specs you read off a service manual. Everyone is a legend in their own head.

Lock washer under the nut will prevent back out. On the other bolt use lock washer under the bolt head. Also that first bolt you showed was definitely spalled. The thread was flattened. Replace bolt in that case. Follow proper torque specs and use Loctite. I have RE and the factory uses copious amounts of Loctite that's for sure 😊.

Hello Joe, Thank you for your suggestions. I will certainly consider them. No, the threads weren't damaged or spalled. But I must say you do have a good eye. I have applied the requisite torque of 45 Nm. I don't know which country you are from, but RE, in its home country, cuts corners to reduce costs. The stock bike doesn't come with any Loctite or similar materials applied to any of the nuts and bolts. I hope you have subscribed to the channel as well. Cheers!
