Thanks for this video, Mike. I edit on FCPX, but only about 25% of the time. So I'm inclining towards a 16GB M1 MacBook Air, and will use external hard drives (no budget at the moment for external SSDs). The other 75% of my time is spent writing, and have never liked the MBP's keyboard (I have a mid-2012 13").

Thanks for the great review! How is the Air handling multi-cam editing in fcp? My old mac struggles and has lots of dropped frames once I have more than 2 angles/cameras. I wonder if the new air could handle 3 or 4 angles?

The only vid I need to see before considering the M1. Though Upgrading the Ram is not an issue for me, the consideration goes to whether I should spend the extra for 512 or stay at the base... if you may have a video on using the 256 Gb while Using the external SSD would be awesome mate. Cheers

This is a really good video. Confirmed my thoughts on the new air m1, ive gone for the 8 core GPU, 16gb ram and 1TB. The extra ssd for future proofing it. Im coming from a 2019 macbook air i5 1.6GHz, 16gb ram and 512gb ssd. The thing i hated most about my previous air was the butterfly keyboard its absolutely awful and also slow. I look forward to seeing more of your videos.

Your close Techkhamun makes a really interesting point re the new 4 port higher MBP. Perhaps waiting to see what comes through in the next generation is key here opposed to spending money now to get what would be effectively a base higher level machine when this is released. Lets hope this is early 2021as I'm getting itchy to get a new M1

With the MacBook air not having a fan, do you notice a noticeable slow down after hours and hours of editing? I'm worried about it throttling when hot and perform worse over the course of a day. Considering the air for work, but worried about using it all day

Really helpful video. By the time I add the 16gb ram and 512gb ssd, the pro is only another £250 for the same spec...I was thinking the pro will serve me better in the long term so I might as well just pay the extra money now (I don't upgrade my laptops much, currently editing 1080p on a 2014 Macbook Air)...now your video has me wondering if I need to? I already have a 128gb Sandisk Extreme SSD, I thought I'd need the extra 512gb storage for editing 4k videos, but sounds like you think 256gb is enough? I was always going to buy the extra ram.... So now I need to consider if the £1200 air with 16gb Ram is enough for me....

It is a useful video but the issue is everyone just keep on pairing the weaker Macbook air against the stronger Macbook pro, it would be nice to see someone paring the stronger version of the air with 8 CPUs and 8 GPUs against the weaker air as well as the pro.

It depends, some titles work and some don't out of the box, most transitions work and most titles but tracking effects don't work if not updated. Best thing you can do is check with the maker

This MacBook can handle any footage I threw at it, I just tried 60fps 4K HDR footage and it was absolutely fine! So I wouldn't worry about your footage

Is this 7 or 8 GPU? I got the second tier AIR 512gb & 8 GPU going unwrapping mines right now. The Don’t like the Pro Touch Bar and went for the Air. I originally ordered the mini M1 with 16gb and 512 ssd but cancelled for the Air.

Awesome comparison... Specially with showcasing the Memory limitations... I am not a video editor or content creator, but do dabble in some content creation for work. I would have loved to purchase the 14-inch MacBook Pro but cannot wait (I’ve held off my purchase for over a year)... so I purchased the MacBook Pro with 16GB Memory and was second guessing the memory upgrade I made (I will be using this Mac for 3 years minimum)... Definitely looking forward to your testing in upcoming videos...

I shoot all my videos on an iphone11 . I use a Macbook Air 2017 i5 8gbram for editing. I have to leave it for hours to convert the footage into proxy media. I also stream on RU-vid with OBS, not games but other stuff like talks and chess streams, I intend to play games like among us in the future as well on stream. Can a Macbook Pro M1 with 16gb suffice to my needs ? I will be shooting on iphone only for a lot of time because it’s fast and handy. I also cannot afford a good camera right now. What do you guys say?

There’s two ways to think about it, having a fan means over time dust can build up making it a potential problem but having no fan means there will be very little issue with dust

I don't disagree about the 16GB of RAM, for now or down the line, that being said after seeing similar exports on M1 Mac Mini's in the base spec, with 8 GB of RAM, nobody was showing that error. The Force Quit screen also shows "52.98" GB of RAM usage in Final Cut, I'm pretty sure you had a glitch/memory leak. Someone also just today posted a video on the Air, playing back Davinci Resolve (through Rosetta, the non M1 Version), encoding, and watching 4K RU-vid and multitasking in Safari as well, on an 8 GB Air, and it seemed like Mac OS was giving priority to whatever focused task but never ran out of memory. Not sure what caused this issue for you, but I've seen this happen with external drives and Macs before.

Yeah, that’s weird, I think it might be the SSD was run out rather than the RAM. Maybe the apps use a lot of cache space in SSD. I’m not sure, only used MBP16 before with Davinci Resolve.

I had 165GB of free internal storage and I did this test with a thunderbolt drive too, I'm not sure why this happened, but I have seen this issue with other people, if you run back to back final cut pro tests and not just open up the project and record for 10 minutes you will see this issue on both models. I tried to figure it out but it could be an issue with macOS or Final Cut Pro, I have reported the issue to apple just incase it's software related, but yeh if you just edit quickly and only run one export you won't have this issue, but if you run final cut pro for a long time and you do multiple exports it always comes with this issue, I can replicate it every time

Okay so ran the test on the 2020 MacBook Pro high end 13 inch and it hasn't failed, we see even more GB for Final Cut Pro X, less available SSD storage and no failure. Interestingly this Intel model has now slowed down so much it has taken twice the time to render this exact project, even though this has two fans and it's thermal throttling. So from my tests I can confidently say that the base MacBook air doesn't thermal throttle as much as this Intel Mac and 16GB would be optimal if you don't want to run into any issues, but you can get away with 8GB depending on your work flow and how intense your workflow is, thank you for commenting and after 3 hours of testing just this point, I've reached the bottom of it! ☺️✌🏽

honestly I feel like people need to provide real tests that are harder on the system. I have a 16gb M1 MBA and I'm using a 15 second clip from my sony a7siii. I wanted to push the limits. It takes forever to render a XAVC HS 4k 10 bit 4:2:2 h.256 120 FPS video for noise reductions and the MBA will heat up and can barely process noise reduction. So if you are doing heavy work with high quality equipment there's limitations. However I edited a 4k iPhone 12 dolby vision video with proxy and had no issues. But again you have to establish a workflow to bypass any limitations.

Help me what to choose? I type for long hours for making stories I do video editing I do photo editing I study “ as a college student “ I will NOT sell my laptop and I will keep using the MacBook for more than 7 years Should I buy MacBook Air M1 16 ram with 256 SSD OR MacBook Pro M1 16 ram with 256 SSD Note: I think the wedge shape of MacBook Air is better in terms of typing for long hours but I don’t trust the no fan after long years of my usage as it might damage the MacBook. And I think the fan in MacBook Pro is better for future proof BUT I don’t trust the touch bar as I read that a lot of people had freezing problems or cracking the touch bar which damages it

Hello! I'm experimenting with the thought of swapping out my iPad Pro 2018 with an MacBook Air M1 (16GB). I edit ads/reviews/general content for work, usually in 4K 60. (Or 4K 24) I use my iPad Pro with LumaFusion and it's been pretty good, but it's struggling a bit when I have 2-3 streams of 4K. Do you think the Air will do better with Final Cut? 🧐 AND, how hot does it get? Great video!

I’ve been so torn which M1 I should get but if the Air at 16GB is good enough for 4K video editing and should last long term maybe I should go for that!

@@ghumakkardsala i’ve found an Air M1 16gb 256gb for 700$ new,i bought it and i do 4k video editing smoothly like butter with no problems. I made 8/12min 4k videos for YT with some transitions and fx but any giant projects,i love it and absolutely not regret a dollar!

Hey brotha!.. I'm a windows guy, I've been on platform since MS DOS days. I tried macos when I ordered my first ever mac air (early 2020). And I just didn't like macos at all.. 😖😖All the functionality of macbooks and the ecosystem and now these M1 lures me a lot but.. I will still stick on with Windows 10 laptops 😓😓

You switched to an M1 air instead of M1 pro ? If so, why ?

@@cbkae8119 From all the reviews I've watched thus far the Air is beyond capable of performing most of the pro tasks I'd need it for (photo editing/3D render), so I'm choosing between something highly capable and something *slightly* more capable. For that extra cash all I'm going to see in terms of benefit is a few minutes saved on certain intermittent (for me) processes. Ram will be a bigger quality of life upgrade in my case. Of course you might want the slightly better speakers, extra battery and touch bar...but id rather have ram and ssd. Plus the Air is nicer design visually and ergonomically IMO.

You can indeed, but the brighter screen in the Pro would be more definite to you, but both models edit iPhone HDR footage like butter ☺️✌🏽

Put it this way, the air beat my high end 13inch 2020 Intel ✌🏽 I will be doing a video showing this as there is no point showing the base Intel as it just smokes this model

Only thing that would worry me is no cooling solution just worry about over heating the the macbook air .... is that something to worry about

Nice hands-on review. I am a bit surprised that nobody talks about or has verified the biggest limitation with current M1 laptops, the fact that you cannot hookup 2 external 4k monitors at 60Hz. Apparently not even via a multi-port HDMI/DisplayPort TB3 dock, which works fine on intel based ones. For many workflows having 2 external 4k monitors plus the laptop screen, is really beneficial. Once you are spoiled with such a setup there is no going back to less, so it seems I will be waiting for the next gen release, bummer. As otherwise all I have seen from the M1 laptops is really off the charts, despite being a gen 1 product.

I would go for the 16GB Air, the amount of times I wished I had more RAM for video work is more than the amount of times I wished I had 7% more power lol

Not to be negative, but I have edited video, and never have I had a single video track occupied, one uses like from 3 to 5 lanes or More depending on your work, Plus each track or lane will have its own FXs (LUTs color correction etc.. ) and IF you're just using one video lane ,... you don't really need Final Cut Pro, it's overkill, get da Vinci resolve, It's FREE! So this video was not really informative in my opinion.
