Why I don't edit in 4k: • Why I NEVER Edit in 4k...
The M1 Macbook Air is still a fantastic option for Davinci Resolve users, even with just 8Gb of RAM. Yes its considerably less capable than the newer M1 Pro models but it's still a great laptop that is still capable of some serious video editing providing you know it's limitations! With the used market flooded with Macbook Airs, its actually probably an even better time to buy than when they were first released one year ago.

Macbook Air 8gb rendered this video in 13:30 minutes (same as the tour video!). I edited and rendered this video on the Air and used about 70% battery total. For reference, I also ran the same project off again using my Macbook M1 Pro and it took... you guessed it, half the time... it took just 6:32!
@Leprutz
@Leprutz 2 года назад
I would actually like it to render in less time. So I can count as working hour and get myself a foot massage in the meantime. In the end the edit is more important to me than the render time. So if it works that well I might actually be considering to buy myself an air with 16gb ram and 1TB But true that the heating will be a disaster. This is the reason I dislike Macbooks. But any other high efficiency windows laptop gets almost as hot too.

Great demo! The built in SSD on the M1 machine is so fast that even having a lot of memory swapping does not hurt the performance of the machine too much, this is probably why 8 GB of RAM is enough for most usage.

I'm in exactly the same boat! Always been a PC guy but the M1 Air seemed too good to be true, so I tried it and I really like it. Now, the interesting part is that when I use the Air I feel cool and creative like I should be sitting in Starbucks with my Beats and my cool shades on sipping something with a really long name. But...if I really want to get things done, particularly in a time crunch, I go back to the PC. Partly because it has dual screens, and partly because I just know my way around it so much better. The Air can do it...I'm just faster elsewhere. But...compared to the huge gaming laptop I used to have to lug around for editing on the go - the M1 Air is an absolute winner!

I really appreciated the demo to see performance, it definitely helped to prove your point, especially since all the research I have done so far said that 8GB of RAM was definitely too slow for editing videos. I’m not making 4K videos, so based on what I’ve seen in this video, the AIR M1 would be able to do everything I need and is 💯 an upgrade from what I have been using. Definitely saving this video for later too for some of the quick tips sprinkled in.

great video again Alex, thanks a lot. I am struggling with that question if the M1 pro is worth the extra cost since the M1 pro is on the market. You give a clear and easy to follow argumentation, thanks again. just ….. Apple is unfortunately great in the marketing and selling stuff to us. I am playing around with Fusion a bit but not massively. will that be fine with „just“ the M1 air? being honest to myself, I am seeking reasons to buy the bigger, faster, nicer, …. damn marketing 😉

The Brightness is still pretty good. Most laptops are around the 300 Nits mark, anything around 400/500 nits is really solid. The 1000 nits on the Pro is really high compared to most.

Yes, they are good! I have the same spec MacBook Pro M1. Over the past year it has essentially replaced my big Ryzen 3950 64gb + RTX 2070 PC, which I only use for 1080P client work now. That thing would always give me the GPU memory full error. The 8gb M1 though, it just works. No errors, rarely crashes. Currently working on 3d scene in Fusion with bluescreen footage, 3d planes, lights, shadows etc. Slow to render, but still smooth enough to edit and composite without errors.
@Leprutz

I have this exact configuration and even though Final Cut Pro is where I edit, it has been more than sufficient for that and using Lightroom and Photoshop every once in a while. If you do video and photo edit occasionally, the 8gb RAM is more than enough. But If you want to future proof your purchase and are able to afford it, go for the 16gb of RAM. Now with the holidays, there should be some great offers around Amazon or other authorized retailers.

I have a base spec m1 air and I was worrying maybe I made the wrong choice with not getting 16gb ram, as for example lightroom runs super super slow. Changing between images in the film strip can take like 2 seconds and loading effects after manipulating the sliders can take a bit too. I was concerned maybe I would have had a much better experience if I ponied up a little more. So this video was very useful for me as I see you also have the 8gb ram. I suppose lightroom is just slow or the problem is cpu bound, which I can live with.

This surprises me as my Macbook Air which is the same model and same specs as yours, struggles with 10-bit 4K h.264 in Premiere Pro. So I assume that Resolve just generally requires less computer power than Premiere? It seems like you focus mainly on editing here, but do you think it is good enough for semi-professional color grading in Resolve as well? Thanks!
@DesertCookie
@DesertCookie Год назад
I would consider an Air if it had a larger screen. 14" is my absolute minimum and after having tasted 16" with my Dell 7610 (15"-size but taller aspect ratio) I don't think I could even go back to that. I'm just waiting for used prices to drop and get the cheapest 16" M1 Pro I can find within a reasonable time. My Dell handles 4K H.265 10bit 4:2:0 fine but with heavy color grading it really struggles. And even in normal office use it doesn't even last three hours. The M1's media engine would be a great treat to help me with future 6.2K H.265 4:2:2 out of my Fuji X-H2s.

I just picked up a very very gently used 8gb/8gb 512gb macbook pro m1 2 days ago and for the price I am ecstatic to have scored this machine. I was very close to ordering an apple refurbished macbook air m1 but wound up getting this for a good amount less than the air would have cost me here in Australia. This only has 10 battery cycles and has apple care+ coverage til mid 2024. If I didn't have this deal fall into my lap, I would have Def gone macbook air m1 and other than those thermal throttling instances, I am confident the macbook air could go toe to toe with the mbp m1 all day long. The lack of ports on the m1 bodies is definitely the only real "downside" and down the road I will get a new m1 variation or m2 or whatever and hopefully get a great port selection again, but for now I'm gonna live that dongle life. Thanks for the continued high quality work. Been following this channel for years and love to see how you've continually upped your game year after year.

Late to the game here, Alex, but thanks! The one thing I really want to see in reviews of the Air is not "rendering" which everyone seems to focus on. I don't care about that all that much. I had to upgrade resolve to continue, but even after that I can still choke the air up soooo easily with only a single 4k timeline (15 mins or so of footage) with a single magic mask. So yeah. not good. unless all you wanna do is basic hard cuts all the time and nothing fancy. When it comes to choosing an apple device, it always confuses me because of the way they price it. resolves denoiser (especially the studio version" is the best there is. de noising is simple. if your video is shot in low light and has noise, it will help. noise comes from when sensors dont have enough light and the gain is boosted. this is like the old days of film, for low light they used film with larger grains to help capture light, but the film was grainy. same concept.

The demo project playback is very impressive. I'm assuming that everything is on the internal storage, right? Can we expect anything close to that level of performance using an outboard (Lightning) drive?
@MrAlexTech
@MrAlexTech 2 года назад
Yeaah everything in this demo was performed with files on the internal drive but, you get practically the exact same performance using an external drive. I use a Samsung SSD and it's just as good. Having the ability to get the same performance running an external SSD and being on battery is the big selling point of these devices for me.

I was never a Apple laptop fan because of the lack of ports and common sense designs. It took Apple a very long time to bring back the SD card slot which is standard on most PC laptops. I may go for the 14" Pro, the sweet spot.

Honestly, same. Plus they always offered basically the same internals as Windows devices but with considerable 'Apple' tax. The Apple tax still exists BUT these devices are at least now unique and, generally or at least in specificaly areas, more capable.

@@biswajit07 No. Those are not hefty animations my dude. What i stated is not conjecture it's a cold hard fact. If you don't have studio and only have the free version on an m1 laptop it's severely crippled. I still have the project file that takes 3 hours to render on free version and 12 mins to render on studio version. Don't talk about what you don't know about. No hardware or changes were made between the free vs studio renders so it's not up to debate about what the difference was between the render times.

Would love to know how it'll react to Sony a7S III 4K@120fps 4:2:2 H.265 as this is the only file that chokes my "was" extremely powerful 2019 desktop. Must note that I don't use proxies as well for that certain file I need to optimize media for smooth playback, but same quality at 24-60fps it's buttery smooth. Keep in mind that my PC is AMD-based and at that time those decoding operations aren't HW-accelerated like the one here and newer CPU's. Would eant this one for my studio which is a few km away from home.

I get 4 hours. I just push my m1 air too hard. I do nothing. I'm not trying to edit 8k raw footage. But I have chrome running and maybe some other apps and it's a bad idea. Even just chrome with a few apps and no DR and I'm lucky to get 4 hours of battery. Apple assures me that it's fine and it passes all hardware tests. But it crashes all the time and I can't figure it out.

I feel like Apple RU-vidrs should really be mentioning that the reason Mac's need less RAM right now is that they're using much faster LPDDR5 RAM (same RAM as a dedicated GPU (GPUs use LPDDR6 tho), so you can't upgrade either) it has to be sautered to the motherboard for the additional buses. Maybe y'all shouldn't and it's just me, but y'all had me thinking Mac OS/Unix was just that efficient 😂 and that all it needed was half of the same RAM. I felt kind of silly when I learned the difference

The free version is severely gimped compared to studio. I literally had a super basic project with some fusion titles and it was taking 3 hours to render. I finally gave in and upgraded to studio, the same project rendered in 13 mins.

@sotonin
@sotonin Год назад
I see this all over the place. But it's really only true under specific conditions. Davinci Resolve free sucks ASS on this laptop if you try to implement any fusion stuff. If you are just hard cutting 4k footage, it's fine and will be great. But you will hit a wall of waiting for renders very very quickly if you try to learn fusion. Unfortunately it's the limited nature of resolves free version that is the first barrier. Upgrade to full version and it suddenly can use the GPU for renders and a 3 hour render turns into 12 mins. The air with a paid version of resolve is pretty darn good, but you will still be able to easily choke it up with fusion (magic mask anybody?) and then you are back up to 3+ hour renders. All in all, the air is only good for very basic editing. Go with a pro / max if you ever want to learn the advanced stuff.
