The West Lancashire Yacht Club (WLYC) has been running this event since 1967. Over the years it has become a beloved tradition in the sailing world, and it has become one of the most loved events on the UK’s dinghy sailing calendar, not just for the sailors, but for our local community, as well as internationally.
Some of the teams in previous years have been from the likes of Australia and the USA, but 2024 nearly didn't happen. On a very tight budget, 2024 was the 1st time it had been held since the Covid19 Pandemic Lockdowns in:- 2020 and 2021. But its success will mean it will continue and will again return to the Marine Lake, Southport in September 2025
If you think this is an easy race, think again. It is regarded as 1 of the hardest sailing events in the world. This race tests teams' physical, mental, and tactical planning skills. The WLYC 24 Hour Race is not only a challenge of endurance, it's also a true test of teamwork, both on and off the water. It helps build trust and demonstrates the spirit of teamwork and resilience that we all depend on in sports and life…
It is also one of the only sporting events that allows all levels to compete against each other, from professional to amateurs. We know of no other races which allow such a wide range of competitors to take part on equal terms. From around the world yacht men and women compete along the side of Olimpic Gold Medel holders, against amateur sailors, school children, and university students... Anyone can take part and anyone can win.
WLYC is already preparing for next year’s race, and the club hopes to build on this year's momentum by continuing to grow participation from sailors of all ages and abilities.
The club invites sailors and spectators to what promises to be another unforgettable race in 2025. The 54th WLYC 24 Hour Race 2025 will take place from:- 13 September to 14 September 2025, on the Marine Lake in Southport, Merseyside, UK
