INEOS seemed better able to handle today's sea-state.

Their tacks looked better. They were watching and paying attention to you Mozzy.

They made massive improvements in a day! The boat was cleaner and faster and better communication, so glad to see them back fighting!!

I thought you'd comment on Ben calling the cyclors "I need traveler!". I believe it was on the 2nd or 3rd downwind leg of the second race. Anyway it was great racing.

Superb comment Mozzy . Really revealing. I really couldn’t see those ENTZ downwind gains as wind shifts. 1 tactic I see. To give yourself a long downwind on a favoured gybe, it seems that ENTZ has started to go to the opposite weather mark, and gybes early (half way to boundary). This seems to give them the purchase / leverage of a longer favoured gybe downwind. Compared to Ineos who take the favoured gate, but then end up at the boundary too early - and spend longer then on a losing gybe.

As always great analysis. Going to be hard but ETNZ will be sleeping less soundly tonight…..

My brain really hangs on the hull designs. INEOS have that bustle and skeg which stays sealed yet bounces off of wave tops with out sticking as you mentioned. As with LR the Kiwi hull seems stickier in the wave tops. I will now also pay attention to the toucan nose on the foil arm making the Kiwis have to heave more. INEOS have strakes on the nose to strip off small touches yet have a recurved bottom that generates lift on large touches. This is why I have been hoping for rougher seas for the Brits. I love seeing the Brit hull skipping over rough waves.

Yes the kiwis needed some shifts to get back into it, but don't forget they were sailing on the non favored sides trying to make good on the scraps left behind by the british.

Fantastic response by IB today. We have a boat race. As others have mentioned the sea state suited IB (not sure how) but ETNZ did come back at them pretty hard to be a few seconds behind at the finish. Looking forward to seeing the response by ETNZ up against the renewed confidence (and performance maybe?) of IB. Game on!

Yeah we will give the Poms these. We expected them to be in it. Pretty happy of the time taken back in both races and I don't think the Kiwi's optimized. Game on, congrats Pom's, looking forward to Friday. Was scared it was going to be over at the weekend.

Now its getting exciting.

That 2nd race start could have gone very differently. Super stylish in the end, but I was twitching. Super racing from IB today, they have to win differently and you certainly called it right Mozzy. Less manoeuvre, more speed. However it goes on Friday and the weekend, it’s nice to counter punch.

Did you spot any changes in tacking method for Ineos? I'm surprised the Kiwis don't have an override on the rotation.

INEOS are really good at ‘learning’ from each race. We will find out if TNZ are good at that in the next two. If they aren’t, this could go INEOS’ way as there’s still more to find in that hull, as there is the the Kiwi hull. It’s a race, then, to learn the most 🎉

Really good call that you made about mast rotation linkage/automation on your previous video. Seems like something that could be easily fixed on the rest day (a "reset to port/starboard tack" option?) so maybe it won't be such a problem next time for ETNZ

Interesting that the mast rotation is linked to the foil, with no apparent override. You would think it would be easy and mandatory to have a master rotation override button.

I was thinking about entzs 2 clearing tacks in the 2 races ago, where they seemed to be able to tack and lose very little. Was wondering what your thoughts are about the wider implications of future boats being able to do that move generally ie would it alliw a boat following at the bittom gate to not have to simply take the unfavoured gate, but instead follow, and soon after rounding perform an entz style clearing tack, but with a smaller loss than would have been the case when taking the unfavoured gate. Thouhhts? Ie follow, clear their wind, abd then continue until a better opportunity to break away emerges.....maybe?

The second race, the kiwis failed to match fully the last turn before the start allowing the brits the space to lead. And they did a good job of covering from there

Is there anyway of comparing foiling height? Have TNZ been better in earlier races at foiling higher than Ineos? A sloppy confused see has got to force them lower to be able to handle the dynamics of the situation, slowing them down. If that’s the case, then it might be difficult for Ineos to keep up their momentum in the next races if it’s a flatter sea state.

Thanks Mozzy, great stuff. Is it possible to find which team did the very best tack and / or very best gybe? Or a comparison of the best tack / gybe. That would certainly give us an insight into the teams potential.

As a keen wingfoiler, I know that foils with better glide are trickier to manage in heavy seas. It’s clear to me that Ineos’ gains today were down to the characteristics of their foils in these specific conditions. So, be concerned! NZ have been gliding beautifully through their tacks in flatter seas, which gave them a clear advantage in the first four races. However, today’s rougher conditions made them uncomfortable. On the other hand, Ineos’ foils may have less glide overall, but they handle bigger seas better. When powered up, both teams’ foils are similar in speed, but the key difference is glide when the power drops (advantage NZ) versus stability in rougher seas (advantage Ineos). So, it seems the race outcomes are more about changing conditions and foil design rather than true performance improvements. I’d be very worried if the sea state calms down again, as that would play right back into NZ’s hands, unfortunately. Towards the end of race two, the sea state was improving, and NZ seemed to be getting more comfortable-and sure enough, they started pushing Ineos closely. Ominous!

Congrats Brits. We got done like a dinner in those 2 races. Kudos to Ineos Britannia. We lost the starts and hence it cost us 2 races. Cheers.

Hope GB win this, no point in the defender winning it when they have no plans on bringing it back to NZ, seems pointless for them to retain it

There has to be something wrong with your windspeed data showing a VMG advantage to Ineos of 2.5 knots upwind? Clearly that's not the case... have you considered filtering the data based on the top 95% of both boats speed rather than looking at straight-line speed? When the boats are sailing together upwind, Ineos have not been running away at 2.5 knots faster...

I still believe the NZ have a stronger package but they looked pretty vulnerable today

It’s still 4-2… it looks difficult but doable, as we have seen. Go Britannia and set up a fair defense in the next cup.

It was so good to see King Ben winning. The 2nd start was insane, get in GBR 💪💪💪💪🤞🤞

I think that overall there isn't much difference in boat speed between them, it mostly comes down to how well they sail. Team NZ sailed better than Inios on first 4 races and Inios better in last two races (possibly conditions suited them more also). Seems like Inios used the down time quite well in improving tactics and comms. Not sure what Team NZ has changed at this stage (no doubt something did). I'm predicting we are going to see plenty more close racing which I'm looking forward to!

Is it possible for everyone to get access to this race data?

Once again Ineos proves to be very fast in in big sea state......The British Navy needs to be constantly on parade just offshore and then the 100 Guineas Cup will come home!

Ben didn’t go for a start attack that has failed 95% of the time.

Kiwis are finished. They’ve hit the performance gain ceiling, there’s nothing left. They knew it at the start of the finals but put on a brave face, knowing a strong start was necessary to blow the Brits confidence. They’ve failed. INEOS have won the data game, the kiwis have tanked.

First time kiwis not listen to everyone - telling need more speed was overruled by burling? And was there... Kiwis before was great taken every call as important. Sadly not listen about need for speed.

To beat the proverbial dead horse, that race 5 pre-start sure looked like race 3 with the roles reversed only no aggressive dial-down or near catastrophic collision. Umps blew race 3 penalty.

I think the extra volume at the bow of Inios gives them a bit of a bounce up if they hit a wave while on foils. ENZ seems to be slowed more, even though they, like Luna Rossa, have a sharper entry. Good design. I was worried the series would be a blowout. That would ruin several years of following the teams, soaking up the information. So the wins today are wonderful. Don’t personally have a dog in the hunt so would be wonderful for the racing to stretch. If Inios win, where would be a good place to host the next cup? Cowes?
