Graduated HS with a 1.5 GPA because i didn't apply myself and i never would have thought about going to college. But now 7 years later i found a passion in physics and astronomy. (I know, how do I understand physics if I couldn't pass HS math? Because i fell for it.) I want to further my education. Which i know i will have to take community college course prior to transferring to a 4 year university. But i cannot even get accepted to those. I feel defeated and depressed. For the first time in my life I know what I want to do. But my HS mistakes are keeping me from my goals. If you are in high school and you have time to turn yourself around. I advise you to. There is nothing i regret more then not applying myself in high school.
@GreatCollegeAdvice
@GreatCollegeAdvice 7 лет назад
Getting accepted to a community college is not at all difficult. Go visit your local school, tell them your story. You will likely have to take a placement test that measures your skills. Don't assume that you will not have a chance to start over. Call the admissions people and make an appointment to talk to someone in your local CC. Do it now.

@@diegojaimes8525 actually 50 percent of people who go to college end up working jobs that they are over qualified for and don't require the degree they have. Except now they have massive student debt (20-50G on average unless you had a full paid schollarship or rich parents) the point is, after high school, college is just an option. Tons of college dropouts or people who didn't even go to college are successful now days.

Yeah, for all of you who are in high school, study hard and don't waste your time like I did. I got horrible grades in high school (like absolute trash grades) and I got rejected by every single university I applied to (even my backup uni). Unless you want to end up as a failure, just work hard and you'll have a bright future.

Hello, Peter. One thing you might consider is that the US is the land of second chances. Just because you are caring for your grandparent now does not necessarily lead to a life of panhandling. Community colleges usually accept anyone, if your grades are bad or your gpa is low at the end of your senior year it's best to go to a community college for atleast two years then transfer to a four year college if you want to :)
@squidwardbignose8362
@squidwardbignose8362 7 лет назад
Nancy Estrella if you did really bad it's not the end of the world just take summer courses or night courses for those F's and there is always community college if you get A's and B's there you can transfer to a 4 year university for 2 years so basically if you do well in community college you can get away with having bad grades in high school but still try anyways

@GreatCollegeAdvice
@GreatCollegeAdvice 7 лет назад
I'm sorry to say, but your dad is correct. Think about it: would a college rather award money to a student who works hard, gets top grades, and goes "above and beyond" what is required, or to a kid who squeaks by with Bs and Cs, who sometimes whines about homework, and hopes that all this talk about good grades is just a bunch of hooey? Now, if you're only looking for *admission*, there is always a college that will take your money. But if you want a college to GIVE you money, you better start working harder to get this A's. Happy studying!

@greatcollegeadvice4757
@greatcollegeadvice4757 6 лет назад
Hi, Mariana. First of all, I'm going to admonish you for writing sentences that do not contain proper punctuation. I recognize that this is "only" a comment line on a RU-vid channel, but you do yourself an injustice by not writing well every time you put your fingers to the keyboard. I am going to assume that your school work is not so sloppy. Students who want to attend an Ivy League school put more effort into their writing. Your question lacks clarity as a result. But what I can say is that if you have Bs and a Ds on GCSEs, there is not much hope you will get into the Ivies, much less with a scholarship. I'm sorry to be hard headed, but I'm assuming you are an international student. Only about 15% of each class of the Ivies is comprised of internationals. The percentage of international students getting a scholarship is much, much smaller. The Ivies have the luxury of admitting the best of the best from around the world. And only the best of those get scholarships. You might still have many opportunities to study in the US, but probably not within the top echelon of universities. Best of luck to you, and keep pushing yourself hard!

There is hope. But your route may not be direct. And you have to be wary: there are schools that will take you with low grades--and take your money, too.
@GreatCollegeAdvice
@GreatCollegeAdvice 7 лет назад
You can possibly get accepted...but as I say, it's more about the costs. You cannot afford (in terms of your time or your money) to not do as well as you possibly can. If you're really not that "into" school, you might ask yourself whether college really is for you. Remind yourself that only about 25-30% of Americans have a BA--but nearly 50% of those who START their college degree never graduate. Ask yourself--which statistical pile do you really fit in? As I say, there is hope for anyone with low grades to pick themselves up, make different decisions, and graduate. But you can't necessarily keep doing the same things in the same way and expect a different result. A college degree requires hard work and dedication. Are you ready for that?

I don’t know what to do. I do feel doomed. My entire school life consisted of being very mentally ill, I had only gotten away from an incredibly abusive parent at 15. Instead of studying and working hard, I was making suicide plans and attempting. I had all Fs by the time I was a freshmen.. and ended up dropping out as a freshman, with a GED. It wasn’t laziness, it wasn’t not taking it seriously, it was real life beating me down and school being in the background, after all I viewed my life as worthless and over by age 12. And now.. at 20 years old, I want to go to college. I want a second chance at education, now that I’m far away from my horrible upbringing. But I don’t know where to start, I live paycheck to paycheck and I feel like I’ll never succeed. Still battling mental health issues that I never got mental help for as a teen.

Joshua Dela Fuente - I think you’re fine. Just go to community college for two years to get your basics out of the way for cheaper and then go to a 4 year college and finish your last two years there. After you finish the first two years, if you do well, you could slide your way into a 4 year college. Also, don’t worry about going to a super great school or anything if it means more money to spend. Just go to whatever works best for your lifestyle and then you’ll finish easy. BUT, I’m not an expert on this shit. I’m a junior so.

Hi, and thanks for your question. First of all, community colleges are open enrollment. You can basically walk in. You will take an exam, and if you have adequate English and computational skills, you can start right in. If your skills are sub-par, you will have to take some remedial work (which you will have to pay for). You have a second chance. You just need to take it! Good luck!

Love to hear your story😑 caz I’m in same situation, I think I’m gonna fail apush and other grades would be a’ s or b’s. The reason I think I’m gonna fail apush is because I did poorly academically, usually having 1 or 2 in leq and another reason was that teacher is really xxxxxxxx. So, how my apush teacher misleading us is at the beginning of the class he tell us that we have a pop quiz today( i was like okay it’s a pop quiz, there’s no way for me to fail that quiz, I did all my work and I got it, not a big deal) Next, he tell us to take out a piece a paper. Then he pass out the quiz (multiple choice) and I fill all my answers on the piece of paper he told us to take out. At the end of the quiz, he only accepting the quiz paper he passed out 😵 So, 0/40 on that first ever pop quiz(I’m not the only one did that) After the quiz he said that you should read the direction on the quiz............... emmmm ( nice 👍🏻)

I've messed up my college when I was 18 , I failed some of my grades but the main reason is my parents can't afford my tuition fee anymore. I have to sacrificed because I still had siblings that were also studying. I had worked after those years and now I'm 31 and wanting to go back to college but I'm a bit worried since I have full time work and with kids. I really wanted to earn a degree now.

There are some kids who simply should not go to college. Trade schools or some on the job training would better suited to them. I hate saying it that way because it perpetuates the idea that only unintelligent people go into the trades which just isn't true. Then there are the kids who have no clue what they will study. This group often racks up debt after changing majors 3 times and been in college for 6 years ... Yikes. Then there's people like me who barely skidded by high school with a 2.3 GPA. I had minimal interest in academics and my ADD wasn't helping either. I managed to turn my act around in community college and went to a state university to get a degree in biomedical engineering. Bottom line please don't push kids into college if they are not ready, don't want to, or simply lack the aptitude.

(I was missing 1/2 a credit) I ending up failing 4 classes again sophomore year. Now in junior year I have As and Bs and I'm doing so much better. However I'm still classified as a 10th grader. My question is if I do more online classes for make up and continue with my current grades do I have a chance at a 4 year University. I live in Georgia if that means anything. So, I'm 17 almost 18. I'm a senior in highschool. Last year during my junior year I decided that I need to change my life. Before, I didn't really try in school and I didn't know what I wanted to do. But now I've decided that I'm super interested in Astrophysics and I want to go to a college that will provide me with an PhD in that field. My GPA really sucks and I didn't really know how important it was. I was thinking about Michigan State for college and the Average GPA required there is about 3.5 - 3.7. I currently do not have a GPA that high. I'm kind of scared for my future, I have a lot planned and I don't know If it will work out. I NEED TO CHANGE MY LIFE, BUT I'm having trouble finding motivation due to home related issues. I want to do something with my life and not just waste it. school just started and I need to raise my grades and so far I'm doing good. But with a sh*tty GPA do you people think its possible to raise my GPA decently in order to qualify for a somewhat DECENT college?? and does joining the military boost your chances in joining a DECENT college???

What are the cons of going to a community college and why are schools like Harvard considered better.
@socksumi
@socksumi 3 года назад
Colleges and universities today require student tuitions to stay in business and compete to get them. As a baby boomer that wasn't the case when I was young. Just due to our large population it was fiercely competitive to be granted entry to any university. When I graduated high school an A grade was required for entry. As a result I was never able to attend a university and settled on a community college instead. It work out however and I landed a life long career in tech support for a public school system. Probably better than I would have with a liberal arts degree.

I hate how I’m 6 months into my senior year of high school and I’m just now realizing the importance of good grades. I have a 2.0 and a 17 ACT score, not even sure if I will get into a college. The sad part is I got a 2.0 by never once actually putting forth effort. Never once studied at home, never asked questions. I just wish I could restart my life, and hang with the right people, study hard and try in school. Now I’m depressed and don’t see a desire to live. My only hope for freedom is starting an online business
@GreatCollegeAdvice
@GreatCollegeAdvice 5 лет назад
Hello, Cheesemaster. An online business would be great. But it's also good that you are owning up to your choices. It's actually the first step to improving your academic prospects. You CAN go to college, if you want. You can get yourself into a community college, study hard (replacing those past bad choices with good ones) and eventually transition to a four-year university. It's possible, and there are many how have gone this path. However, not everyone is cut out for college, and many have made good money starting a business (but warning: most small business start ups go bust...). But you have options. Don't give up on yourself. Today is the first day of the rest of your life. Make a good choice today, and another one tomorrow, and you'll soon have a whole year of good choices behind you...which will dampen the impact of any bad ones. Go for it!

Don't be sad or depressed. Rather, talk to your teacher and figure out how best to improve. Failure is something we all go through at one point or another. What matters is what you do about that failure. Standing around feeling sorry for yourself will not get you anywhere. And the good thing is that your middle school record is not all that important. So use this experience to improve your academic and self-advocacy skills, and put your energies into improvement. Then high school will be all that much more productive, successful, and maybe even fun. Go for it!

I never had a interest in College, until the last couple of months. I am currently a senior in high school in Southern California. The reason why I never had an interest in college is that I have ran many successful businesses over my High school years. My most profitable business a Amazon reseller business that would of made me 150k year full time, needed to get shut (my decision) due to some huge over night rule changes. I had other businesses at the time and still do. From that point on I started researching U.S. coin collecting and history related with it. It was a hobby of mine in middle school, collecting mostly. Well now I have learned how to turn into a profitable eBay business, that I just started. I have been doing some extensive research on the hobby in terms of history in the last few months. I have learned a ton, and now have landed with some important connections due to a huge database project I am doing that will benefit the coin community. I am currently in the process of digitizing every coin news paper article, magazine, books, and advertising supplements regarding Lincoln cents, and error coins released in the last 110 years. This project has landed me in contact with some higher up people in the coin community. I am talking about people with masters degrees and published authors. I bumped into a guy last night. I told him my whole story. He used to be an admissions officer at the University Virginia. He got his BA at Cambridge and he went to Berkeley and got MBA in business. He was really surprised that I never applied to any 4 year schools. My plan has been all along to just go to a great community college by my house. The reason was because my 9-12th GPA is a 3.2 and my one SAT score is only a 1200. I only took the SAT once. I took it because I was curious what I would score on it not because I was using it for college. Because of that I never studied for it, and didn't put 100% of my effort in it. I have never been any really credible club. However I have around 350 hours of community service, thanks to my dad working for a nonprofit that does a ton of charity work, and also my church. My biggest regret was that I was offered to be a intern at one of top computer crime labs in the country for a police department, I choose to deny their offer because of how busy I with me running my businesses. I regret that decision to this very day. I decided 3 months ago to take up a minimum wage job at a local frozen yogurt place to see how it was working for someone else and what I could learn from so one one day open a retail or restaurant business my self. I still work their, but only a 10 hours a week, its a great experience though. The former admissions officer at Virginia said I was crazy not to apply to any Universities. He said that I would of got accepted to many business schools for my undergraduate based on special circumstances. Now back to research report I am doing. He said that once I finish this report, that it will highly benefit the coin community and that I should publish a book in it. He said he knows of a couple publishers personally and can get me to have a book published. So here are my options, what should I do. Option 1: Go to community college, continue this research report, and get a book published in 2 years, and set aside my time consuming profitable businesses. This would help me to get into a top 10 business school to complete by BA Option 2: Apply to many universities now, and go where ever I get accepted. I would continue to work on my research project, and still get a book published. I would than transfer to a big business school, for my last 2 years for my BA. Option 3: Take a gap year. Start running my 2 businesses full time, I am 95% positive I will make 100-130k my first year. And set aside my research project. On a side note. I am completely capable of getting good grades. I got straight A's 7-9th grade when I had no businesses running. I didn't start my first serious business until 10th grade. I have thoughts that if I go to community college, I won't be around the best type of people influencing me to drop out of school completely to do work full time. Also it just happens that I my new business partner happens to be the smartest kid in my school. Even though he looks completely normal. He has a 5.2 GPA. This is the highest GPA at out school out of 2600 kids, in a middle class area. He also is in the top 99% percentile for the SAT and ACT. He also happens to work for a huge hospital, and has a written research report for caner that is award winning. He also is in two sports, and is president of 2 of top 5 biggest clubs in our campus. Any advice for him, he still hasn't gotten a response from any IVY league school or Berkeley. He did get accepted into Rice, USC, and UCLA. Any advice for him to get him a response back sooner from the top big schools? Back to me. What option should I take? And is there a solid chance this late in my senior year to getting accepted in a semi decent four year University for business.
@GreatCollegeAdvice
@GreatCollegeAdvice 7 лет назад
well, thanks for the long post. You are not crazy to not apply to college. But I totally agree with the admissions officer you met that you will definitely be recruited by top universities who want enterprising students like you. It's not all about your grades. It's partly about your grades, and clearly you are smart enough to get those grades if you want them. Not really sure how to advise you on your options. All are possible. Bottom line: don't sell yourself short. Ever. Did your friend and business partner get what he wanted?
@rybob7
@rybob7 7 лет назад
Thanks for the reply. My friend got fed up with the IVY leagues. He is deciding right now between Berkely or UCLA with a full ride scholarship. I ended up applying to about 12 schools in a period of a week about a month ago. I got accepted to all of them accept to Indiana due to it being a prestigious school for businesses and my low GPA. I am currently deciding between the University of Arizona or Marquette. I got a scholarship at Marquette paying for 75% of my tuition. The problem I am dealing with now is coming up with the money to pay for the tuition. I don't have any credit history because I just turned 18. I only got a $5500 worth of loans from the gov. I applied for private students loans and had my parents co-sign them. I got denied on all 3 of the private loans due to my parents' sub-par credit history. I have spent the last couple of days trying to figure out how I can come up with the money, I need to come with 20-25k in 3 months or try to find some kind of loan. Do you have any suggestions? Thank You, Ryan
@GreatCollegeAdvice
@GreatCollegeAdvice 7 лет назад
Hi. Don't go into more than $5500 in debt. Just say no to parent loans! Of course you got into a lot of schools; your friend the admissions officer is right. But he didn't explain to you how financial aid works. But at this point, I'd tell you to do the gap year route and apply again to colleges more likely to be more generous. And in the meantime, if you're really making $150k on your business, you'll be able to pay your own way. Oh, and take a course to bring up your standardized test scores. Better: get a private tutor. Email me through my website greatcollegeadvice. I am pretty confident I can get you more money next time around. Good luck! Mark

Yes, you can probably get into an average college. You will need to think about how to pay for it, however, and to keep an eye on the investment. A history teacher has a relatively fixed salary, so you do not want to take on too much debt.

in my freshmen year i had so many great grades and my gpa was at least a 3.5. in my sophomore year, the beginning of the semester, i had a 3.0-3.5 gpa and later in the year i got really lazy and tired during quarantine and had all F’s except my bio class with a B. now im a junior and my first semester grades were A,B, and C. its the second semester and now i have mostly F’s and B’s and like 2 A’s. I had covid in the beginning of the year which led me to have many missing assignments which i did make up. im just worried that i wouldnt get into a decent college with my grades. i always have room to have ny grades go up but i dont do the best in tests so im just hoping i end the year with at least a C or higher becuase i am not doing good in my junior year

@GreatCollegeAdvice, I ended off my sophomore first semester with 4 As, 2 Bs and 1 C. I’m in honors classes and next year I am taking AP, but can you tell me if this is still bad if I am thinking of going to a good 4 year college? My teacher said colleges don’t really pay attention to freshman grades because they understand the transition from middle to high school, but I still want to know if that C is going to affect me badly. Please respond if you can or any person who knows how it would affect me. It would be much appreciated !! (:

Hello, I am a seventh grade student that has bad grade but they are getting better. My midterm showed that I had Two D's and one F now I only have two D's and I need help.

Hi. Fortunately your grades from middle school do not count when applying for college. If you need help at school, you need to speak to your teachers about how to improve. Building good habits now will help you when it really does count: from 9th grade forward. Good luck!

I have the same problem as david i'm really smart and hard working, i'm great at almost all subjects, even exercise, I am a genius, no arrogance but I do consider my self one, in highschool my family was hell, we had financial problems, our country is at war and we can't go back, and my parents are divorced and i'm living with my mom, and the relationship between us is atrocious. it ruined me really my life is ruined i lost friends, health, grades, everything. i got 89% gpa without even studying. i'm used to getting 95% and 97% when i actually try my health suffered, i'm a lot weaker than whne i was 15-16 years old, i'm 17 almost 18 and i can't do pullups and can barely do pushups. in my family we fight everyday. it's horrible. i can't wait to move out. but my grades are bad now. life is hard. but i am competent to do anything. I just wanna get accepted to undergraduate, hopefully i'll be far from my parents are i'll do well, then i'll instantly get accepted into masters if i wanted to

Hello. I'm an aspiring future med student. Um, I had to deal with major depressive disorder since the eighth grade through ninth grade and never really went to therapy sessions because of my opinions on therapists and psychologists. I took all honors and AP thinking i'd fix my act, without focusing on the fact my mental health could take a toll on my academics. I preformed poorly in my classes and had a few D's and F's. I'm in my sophomore year and have had no D's or F's.. so things are changing. I'm finally in a metal positive mindset, but i have constant anxiety of being a high school failure. I really want to become a med student, and for Med school, high school grades don't mean ANYTHING. But, in order to get into med school you do need to go into pre-med, and that's what i'm worried about. Will my failed freshman year and improved sophomore year ruin my chances into being accepted into a pre-med or four year college ??? Even with a successful junior and senior year? I'm planning to do extracurricular activities, community service/volunteering, get straight A's, do pre-med shadowing, etc. But could that be enough?
@GreatCollegeAdvice
@GreatCollegeAdvice 4 года назад
Hi, Isabel. Thanks for your questions. Let's see if I can be somewhat helpful. First, getting into college is your first step. Stop focusing on med school right now...it's about 6 years away. Focus your energies on getting good grades and doing the fun things that you enjoy doing. And do them to the best of your ability. "Shadowing" doctors is relatively meaningless right now. First you need to get into a decent university--and to prepare yourself for the rigors of that experience. Second, remind yourself that "pre-med" is not a major. You can major in art history or religion or philosophy and still go to med school (you just need to take the prerequisites that med schools want and need). One of my former students was an anthropology major and just started med school at an Ivy League school. Third, today is the first day of the rest of your life. Stop thinking about the past--which you can't erase. You should focus on the present: are you getting the best grades possible? Are you gaining the knowledge necessary to kick some abdomen in college? Are you doing fun and interesting things in the pursuit of excellence outside the classroom? Fourth, try--inasmuch as you can--to relax. Since you are not in a positive mental mindset, use that mindset to enjoy your life as much as you can. Enjoy learning. Enjoy your involvements--whatever they are (another of my students currently in med school was an outstanding trumpeter and a member of the swim team--absolutely nothing related to med school). So focus on the now. Do your best in school, and show people that those Ds and Fs do not--and will not--define you. Work with your teachers and counselors, and develop positive, academic relationships with them. Show them that you are definitely an A student--despite past difficulties. Today is a new dawn. Breathe. Smile. Stop worrying. Work hard. Have fun. Pretty simple, really. It's all going to work out.

@GreatCollegeAdvice
@GreatCollegeAdvice 6 лет назад
Hi, Lucas. It's all a matter of perspective, isn't it? C-B grades are okay, but one could also say that they are not indicators of academic preparedness. If you want to do well in college (never mind getting in), you want to take full advantage of the educational opportunities you now have. And usually these opportunities are free (in public high schools), while college is darned expensive. So it is all a matter of perspective. What's your perspective on your own educational opportunities and performance?

So, as a senior who is just a month away from graduating and hasn’t even started to make up a missing Spanish credit and is on the verge of failing all of my classes and is only just now finally feeling motivated to fix my shit, my chances aren’t looking great. My GPA isn’t awful, but 2.5 isn’t that great either. I have a huge amount of extracurricular experience that I’m hoping to use to my advantage (being one of the leads and managers on several music teams, and the founder of one of them, as well as having worked as a musician on a couple indie games and at least two fairly popular internet webcomics. Not only that, but I used to go on church mission trips and I have been participating in school plays for half of my school career). How much do you think this kind of stuff will matter to the college I hope to apply to (especially since I’ll be majoring in music, which most of that stuff is relevant to)? Do you believe that it might outweigh at least a bit of my bad grades?
@GreatCollegeAdvice
@GreatCollegeAdvice 5 лет назад
Hello, Frosty Mac. it is clear that you are a very busy and capable young man. You don't mention the schools to which you aspire. That will make a difference in how to answer the question. However, extracurriculars and academics are not equivalent: they are two separate realms. To put it bluntly, schools are looking for how well you do in school. A company may be very impressed by your Leadership, work ethic, and drive. Of course music goers will be impressed by your musicality and performance abilities. But in applying to college, you are applying to a school, and they are looking at how well you do school. I would also mention that as a second semester senior, if you haven't already applied to college, you will have missed the deadlines for many. However, if you are planning to attend a community college or a local four-year university that is not very selective, you should have no trouble. I have a feeling that despite your academic weaknesses, you will go far. But you need to remember to pay the piper: the measure of your success is different in different arenas. Good luck!

Hello. You have quite the handle (which I'd consider changing if you want to be taken seriously). However, I'm sorry you're having difficulty. Focus less on your scores and more on learning. If the language is difficult for you, then things will improve as long as you put effort into increasing your fluency. A short term problem is not necessarily where you will end up. Focus on the language, and the rest will follow--eventually. Don't give up.

I had good grades I came to the u.s. in 6th grade, took me a year to learn the language I passed the TESOL before any of my classmates even those that had been here for their entire lives. But then life happened I went through a really bad trauma 7th and 8th grade was hell. I gave up on my life and my future, I messed up so much. I’m a senior now and I want to have a future I have always wanted to become a paramedic but with my gpa I doubt I’ll get into any college or that I’ll get any scholarship I wasted so many years because I couldn’t see the end of the tunnel but now that I’m out and I want to follow my dreams I feel like I can’t because of how badly I messed up

I have been doing well (A, Bs) my first two year of high school then my second quarter of junior year i got (A,A,B,C,C,D) because i was so overwhelemed with work and didnt rly know how to balance myself but my first semester grade will be (A,A,A,B,B,C) since i did slightly better first quarter. But still that really brought me down and i got really upset since my gpa will be affected. im taking more aps and honors classes now so there is a lot of pressure. my second semester is starting soon and i want to do really well. I just hope colleges will still want me even with my slip up second quarter.

@GreatCollegeAdvice 5 лет назад
Hi, Caroline. It's good to challenge yourself. But are you pushing yourself into courses in which you cannot get A's and B's? AP and honors courses are great, but if the material is too tough, you might want to dip down a level. That said, challenging yourself is always a good thing. But you have to find the right balance. Good luck.
