Very good! Bout time someone used the term "Garbage". I've been watching a lot of poker videos. Also, I've been playing DDB video poker almost everyday since 1990'. Weather at a casino, PC, pocket game and ever since it became available on our smart phones! I have played, just to test, every type of combo you can think of. When i get 2 pair, 22, 33, 44 with any pair, i keep the kicker cards and always go for the quads! I treat them as AA. I see a lot of people play them like JJ'S or better on DDB poker, like 3355 going for the boat? Drives me nuts. I've hit more quads just holding the kickers this way over the year's! Good video!
On the gut shot straight draw I always discard all and hope for the best . The difference in the expected value between the hands is so small I’d rather take my chances being dealt something big then going for a straight. Good tips though 🙂.
I've seen people, when an Ace and two other high cards are delt, hold the two high cards and discard the Ace. Not sure why. However, your first example with the Ace and Jack, I usually hold both the Ace and Jack (or any other high card) because if it throws another Jack and no Ace, I have an extra hand to play from my alotted bank. I do, however, only hold the Ace if TWO other high cards are thrown with the Ace. I learned this from watching my wife's strategy pay off better than not. To each his/her own, I guess.
Thanks for the video--I thought it was interesting to hold that Ace pair n discard the other pair in order to try for the 4 Aces...as well as when there is a full house w 3 Aces, just keep the Aces..I will try that on my next trip soon! It seems many times the machine will sort of trick u into taking the lesser win--tempting....
I never go for the gutshot in any video poker game unless my machine is playing badly and I want to mix it up a little or occasionally if I'm playing dueces. People can disagree and argue math all day but with that hand I prefer going for a pair of j's or better to atleast recoup the bet or gamble for an even better hand that pays better than the str8.
The main reason for this is due to the value of two pair. The expected value of the inside straight and discarding everything are very close. In Jacks or Better, you receive 10 credits for 2 pair, which brings the EV of discarding all 5 cards slightly higher than holding the inside straight. Reducing the payoff of 2 pair to 5 credits is enough to lower the EV of discarding everything below that of an inside straight. This is why in DDB, you hold the inside straight. Hope this helps!
It seems that to get 4 of a kind in double double bonus I have to on average go through anywhere from 250 to 400 pushes to get quads. Of course sometimes even more up to almost a 1000 pushes. I mostly use vp free training software to practice. Do you have any data to backup what I on average usually experience? Thank you for your content I really enjoy it.
why keep the gut shot? Is it really mathematically more likely to win than throwing everything away? Also, I've started playing Ultra. If you have good multipliers either on a full house hand or potentially for the next hand, shouldn't you keep a full house? thanks.
#4 what if the hand is 5-7-6-8-10 no real suited connectors ? Do you go for the 4 or the 9 to complete the straight ? I tend to notice it will give the higher straight so If I had to pick one I'd go for the 9 . Whats your thoughts ?
I have become shy about taking the Full House in Double Double Bonus. I only seem to get 4 of a kind when playing on Jack's or better which gives much less. I also have never gotten that 4th ace when throwing away a full house in Double Double.
You are right to see it that way. I don't know why, but you are more likely to pull 4 aces when holding 1 or 2 aces than holding 3 aces. Out of the last 20 4 of a kind with aces I have pulled, only 1 was holding 3 aces. I know this because I take pictures of the screens while I'm waiting to get paid.
Mike, really enjoying your videos. Question. So what if the full house consists of 2 Aces instead of 3? Do you still break up the full house in DD Bonus?
Last example: I keep the low card and hope the other 3 of them come on the draw. 400-800 payoff if it hits. I never go for a gut-shot straight. The low payoff, 20 units, low probability of hitting, just ain't worth the gamble.
How many of these apply to regular bonus poker? I'm assuming the two pair doesn't apply, but I could see how it could as well. Also, does playing an Ultimate X variant change the math on stuff like the full house?
The strategy for Bonus Poker is similar to traditional Jacks or Better. Not exact but close. Ultimate X is a beast of its own. I’ve done a few videos on it. Check out part 17 of Video Poker Genius if you want to see a play session with training mode enabled.
Why keep the low pair when dealt two pair (one being Jack's or better). There are more cards in the deck that can help you by throwing away the low pair. Jack's or better pays the same as two pair anyway. Why only with aces do you throw away the low pair?
The payoff for a full house is high enough that the expected value of holding two pair is higher than just the high pair. It more than makes up for it. The opposite is true when a two pair hand contains aces.
Your tip on not breaking up 2 pair unless “Aces”. For the life of me I have always broken up the 2 pair to get the 4 of kind. I will see how I fare later tonight..
Last year I got the 4 Aces and a Kicker for the first time after faithfully playing at the local casino for just a couple of months. You just gotta get lucky. Only thing is, I bet "Minimum" when it happened LOL
Today I had 4 Jack's with an ace kicker. I kept the 4 jacks,should I have got rid of the ace or keep it? Was not sure if there was a better way of doing it
In Double Double Bonus, the payoff for 4 jacks is the same regardless on what the fifth card is. If you are playing Super Double Double Bonus or Double Double Aces and Faces, then there is a premium for 4 jacks with an ace, meaning that you should keep the ace. Which game were you playing?
Thanks for the helpful video. One question about the full house with aces. What if you are dealt a full house in which you only had 2 aces instead of 3. Would you still hold just the 2 aces or do you need to have 3 aces in order to throw away the full house you were dealt?
No way)do you go for a gut shot. Just bad advice plain and simple. Only takes one time to get dealt quads. Had it happen several times. One has to hit a lot of 4 card outs to make up for hitting a primo hand. What genius came up with this?
I usually play jacks or better and I was told that the only time you throw away a winning hand was if you had a high pair plus 3 to a royal. I didn't know there were other exceptions in double double bonus. I would usually never throw away a full house. I guess I was playing all wrong!
so you're saying if you get Ace Queen Jack even if they are unsuited you are going to toss the ace and keep the queen and Jack? this is a great video by the way
Hi Garrett, Yes, though it is not that intuitive. My guess is that holding the queen and jack increases your odds of a straight or a pair of jacks or better - just enough to be a better hold than the ace. Thank you for the comment!
@@ClubMikeV That one is a Gimme . Ive held just the Ace and GOT AAA dealt and sometimes with the kicker . I got AAA no kicker just a few weeks ago on 10-11-19.

Do I just keep the KK? or keep the 22 and hope to get 4 of a kind. 2) 2255 - Do I keep the two pairs or keep just the 22 and hope to get 4 of a kind with a higher payout. Thoughs? Thanks
Hello Koji, For both examples, keep the two pairs. In Double Double Bonus, the only instance where it is appropriate to break up a two pair hand is if one of the pairs is aces.
OK thanks for the tip...I guess I've been playing them wrong this whole time...lol....Thanks also for the tip to Hold inside straight draw.....I used it last Sunday and hit the Straight about 50% of the time...it works....I used to just discard the hand (unless high cards are involved. Great tutorial...I'm planning of watching more of your videos before hitting the Video Poker slots
Thanks for the informative video. In regard to Ultimate X Double Double Bonus, you not only look at the current hand but the next possible one as well. So a full house would give the next hand 12 times it's value (if you are lucky enough to get a good hand). What adjustments would you make for Ultimate X Double Double Bonus over Jacks or Better or even the info above?
You're welcome! That is a very good question. There are definitely some strategy adjustments to make when playing Ultimate X Double Double Bonus. A few easy ones to remember: 1. Always hold 2 pair, even if one of the pairs is aces. Two pair awards a 3x multiplier on the next hand while a pair only awards 2x. Plus you have a shot at a full house, awarding the 12x multiplier. 2. Hold 4 to a flush instead of 3 to a royal flush. 3. Hold 4 to an outside straight instead of a low pair. Example: 5,6,7,8,8. Coincidentally, I have plans to make a new video on Ultimate X to discuss strategy. Until then, the 3 adjustments above is a good start.
Glad you brought this point up on Ultimate X about being able to see the multipliers on the next hand & maybe Mike can comment too. When I'm physically in a casino, I'll take a look at the Ultimate X machines because more often than not, there are multipliers left on the machine. So I guess my question is, what reason(s) would someone get up & leave without playing their multipliers? Did they: A) Just hit big (big enough for them) & took their winnings and left B) Didn't feel like playing any more hands C) Just don't care And I can't include that they "didn't know", because if they're playing that game, they knew. Just curious because this has always puzzled me. Don't get me wrong, there have been MANY times that I have been grateful that they left them, just wondering. 🤔
A four of a kind that consists of having all four cards of either of the following: Fives, sixes, sevens, eights, nines, tens, jacks, queens, and kings.
I hit 4 Aces and kicker out in Vegas last month, Golden Nugget. Paid $2,000. Darn, they gave me a tax slip! Next time I will look for a game that pays $1,200 or under.
A 6/5 machine has a lower payback percentage simply due to the reduced payoff for a full house. Simply put, you will lose quicker in the long term with 6/5 than with 8/5 or 9/6.
All video poker games are abiding the concept jack or better. But double bonus is allowing u to double the amount u win by giving u a card should be higher then the card you shall draw
@ClubMikeV I have a video poker training app for double double bonus poker 9/6 and was dealt 4, 4, 4, 2, J. I held three 4's and it showed minor error! I didnt think I would hold the 2 as a kicker in that situation, but the apo said I was wrong. Any thoughts??,
@@NYPartyCrashers Strange. I plugged in those cards onto the “Best Hold” iOS app and it tells me to just hold the three 4s. Are you sure you weren’t playing Triple Double Bonus? Do you remember what the suits of those cards were? And which training software were you using?
@ClubMikeV It was Video Poker Trainer app and suits definitely didn't matter and was double double bonus. Says what I held was expected return of 41.355 and correct hold is return of 42.128, so it doesn't seem like a major error and I would hold 3 fours going forward!
The math does not lie. A hand such as KK775 has an expected value (EV) of 1.68 when holding two pair, and an EV of 1.45 when just holding the 2 kings. Two pair is still better to hold, even if it results in a push, unless you have a pair of aces.
Piggy-218 I am in total disagreement. In my extensive experience you ALWAYS hold 3 to the royal(TDB excepted in certain instances). In the case of 2A or 3A, never hold a kicker. You are trying to get the four of a kind first, then the kicker. If you hold a kicker you are reducing the odds of a four of a kind by 50% (draw one card versus 2) Remember your ultimate goal is the royal, provided you are playing full coin. If you are playing less than full coin on a D, DD, TD, A’s are your main goal.
I have had the worst luck with these machines. Even with practice I have never won more than seventy five dollars. I only did that once as well. Best player I ever saw. Just took A's over just about everything else. I saw him hit three to four four ace hands this one day.

What is the proper play in Double or Triple Bonus if you are dealt a face card and a low pair tens or lower? Alot of time I keep the face card and end up getting another one. And if I keep the low pair I dont win.
Holding 3 aces with a 2/3/4 kicker has a slightly lower expected value (EV) than the 3 aces alone. According to the strategy calculator: EV of AAA: 12.27 per 1 credit bet EV of AAA2: 11.70 EV of AAA22: 9.00 Therefore no, don’t hold one of the small cards. If curious, this does change if playing Triple Double Bonus, where 4 aces with a kicker pays the same as a royal flush (4000). In that case, the odds favor holding a small card. Hope this helps.
If you are a poker player you will know what to hold. If you have three aces and two sixes you take the winning hand right then instead of a gamble of getting another ace.
You're holding 3 of a kind, still a winning hand. At a 5 coin bet you are effectively gambling 15 coins for a 4.17% chance at either 800 or 2000 coins (the payout for 4 of a kind Aces in double double)
What's with people calling cards "kickers"... Who gives a shit about those cards. There's no need to even mention them, much less give them some kind of name. Just say the card number.
