A crisis unfolded in western North Carolina as officials rushed to get more water, food and other supplies to flood-stricken areas without power and cellular service Monday, three days after Hurricane Helene ripped across the U.S. Southeast.
The death toll from the storm approached 100.
At least 94 people across several states were killed. A North Carolina county that includes the mountain city of Asheville reported 30 people killed.
Video footage showed Lake Lure in Rutherford County filled with wooden debris.
Supplies were being airlifted to the region around the isolated city of Asheville. Buncombe County Manager Avril Pinder pledged that she would have food and water to the city by Monday.

Was just going to say the same thing. Experts estimated that approximately 4.7 BILLION board feet of timber were damaged or destroyed with the explosion of Mount St. Helens and millions STILL float in Spirit Lake!

That's exactly what i was thinking. When my wife and I visited Mt. St. Helen 2008, our guide told us the lake smelled like raw sewage for years. On the way back down, we visited the lake and mother nature took it's course and the lake was crystal clear . The difference is that Mt. St. Helen is located in middle of nowhere/ in an isolated area so the debris were natural tree/rocks debris vs here, it's refrigerators, boats, plastic, etc. Long recovery ahead..

They may have to mount horizontal beams on the front of boats to push the debris to the bank where excavators can grab it and load it on dump trucks. What a mess. Those poor people have lost everything.

After hurricane Ike hit southeast Texas, the marsh reeds, cane and debri were piled 10 feet high .iles from the coast all along interstate ten. The surge moved a large house across I10, and sat it down on the service road across the interstate from where was built. My heart goes out to all victims in from this storm.

Didn't realize the total distuction until seeing some of these videos. Unbelievable, terrible damage. Much loss of life. Bless all those affected by this massive disaster. Seems like these storms are becoming more often and damaging. Prayers for all! Stay strong!

This is where the debris from Chimney Rock ended up. There is at least one family reported missing from Chimney Rock, and the house is gone. I am afraid this is where they are.

A lot of this debris originated in Chimney Rock, there are people reported missing there, and their houses are gone. They have no cell service or land line communication, power is out, and the road is washed out both directions leaving town. They flew in SAR by helicopter yesterday, but it rapidly switched to a recovery operation.

That's insane. I'd build me a big fire pit in my yard and just start pulling stuff out and burn or stack what you can. Get the community involved. It might not be much at first but eventually equipment will show up to help clean.

Lake Lure may have to go back to the original: an almost sacred valley inhabited by people before the Europeans then came in, and later put in the dam. The silting has now almost ruined the lake, and therefore, it may be time to better remove the dam, and let the silt and debris naturally flush out and restore the valley.

@@connieyoung3341 There are a lot of outbuildings that are mixed in with that debris, and dock material from the marina that washed out... But there are homes and businesses from Chimney Rock mixed in there, and people are reported missing from Chimney Rock.

It is not almost completely filled. That is a massive exaggeration. That is debris, mostly from the town of Chimney Rock, that washed into the lake which is only about 1/3 mile from where the town stood. Are things bad here? Yes. Are they bad in TN? Yes. - but there's no need to exaggerate for clicks and views. Stop it.
