Ok, for everyone who is wondering where Whale's comment went, never fear for the wayback machine is here. The Comment: "Storytime. BLUFOR was a little miffed about the operation, how it was executed, how it was handled. "Miffed" might be an understatement, actually -- tl;dr version: Debrief took 2+ hours. longer: BLUFOR was VERY unhappy, for the most part, that OPFOR had decided to engage the FOB at op start instead of waiting for them to come to us. It set them back a good twenty minutes -- twenty minutes of defending, of trashing old plans, and of getting to complain together in that pressure cooker of a base. Note that it was not against the rules for us to attack the FOB, and that they did carry at least some expectation to have to defend it as the (six hour!) operation went along. They just thought it was in bad taste. For us on OPFOR, however, it felt like a necessity. BLUFOR had a 1.5:1 player advantage, better technology, mortars attached to every squad, unlimited hellfires for their AH-6s, and six hours to blow up five caches on a not-that-big map. The only thing pulling their punches was an ROE not to engage possible civilians. In hindsight it was a bit of a shock that we (OPFOR) won at all. Both sides began with 1000 "tickets." Tickets disappeared as losses mounted: losing a soldier was 1, losing a car was 5-10, losing a helicopter was a lot more, and losing a cache was 200. BLUFOR was really pissed about having choppers get taken out of commission at op start. BLUFOR also had to wade through a knee-deep IED field that essentially covered every road on the map -- because while we started with only 15-ish PG-VL RPG-7V2 per each of the five caches, we had easily >100 IEDs at each as well. So the losses for BLUFOR right at the start of the op were demoralizing. ... and as OPFOR, that was our goal! No rules against pissing BLUFOR off. Whether it's sportsmanlike, well. There was other stuff that broke during the op, usually for both sides: - there was a night portion that was glitched to be PITCH BLACK for a good 15 minutes. - OPFOR could spawn at some caches after they were destroyed and omae wa mou BLUFOR standing there - bursts of nasty desync that were rare but still happened Note that the IEDs, of course, killed us almost as much as they killed BLUFOR: - streamable.com/qa3upb - streamable.com/5b5pp6 ... and here's a cool GIF showing how shitty the iglas were: - gyazo.com/bbd26650bd393c7327a6974271938263 Also, I shot down two of their helicopters :) - streamable.com/4smba8 edit: okay multiple BLUFOR have DM'd me to (remind) me: - BLUFOR's CO got replaced a few days prior to the event, causing disarray - BLUFOR's intel/OPORD was murky and included some dubiousness about the presence of AA - a stream sniper gave BLUFOR CO info about the other side that he had to choose to ignore to avoid metagaming - BLUFOR had a MUTINY 40 minutes in started by someone that wanted EVERYBODY to ragequit the op. oops!"

At first you think rimmy shooting down three copters is silly. Then you remember that this man, during some 40k ops, shot down Aircraft, WITH HIS SIDEARM.

Man, I fucking hate how the Arma community treats ROE like a joke. It should make gameplay more exciting and tense because you don't know if that truck that just drove up is packing an IED or not, but most operations that aren't lazy checkpoint defense usually just devolve into "blow up all civilians who cares lol" because the guys in charge of the session are too limp-wristed to punish their players by forcibly ending a session that they worked really hard on. I think more missions should integrate a punishment for violating ROE, like having a longer wait to respawn or maybe being forced into a support role or something.

This OP reminded me of an airsoft event i took part a few years ago. It was set during the vietnam war, and my team was on the vietcong side. Roughly 30-35 of us, and 55-60 on the american side. Starting off at 3 am, we gave the opposing team no time to prepare, at 3.30 there was already a squad attacking their FOB, whle others were putting down mines, and ambushing their patrols. At 7 am it started raining, making it more difficult for the american teams who had to climb a hill to attack our outpost, and had to go down and return to base when they had no more "medical supplies" available (12 guys at the outpost held against 40). The best part in all of this, was seeing their faces: tired, hopeless, awfully unprepared for the hell we gave them. The event finished at 10 am, it was called a draw, because the organizaion didn't want the americans to loose so badly (they completed 1 objective out of 5), but apart from this, it was the best event i ever attended.

God this OP was so fun to watch, the strategy and execution was on point throughout and even with mounting victories on Rimmy's side there was still the tension they could start losing any moment due to the enemies obvious and numerous advantages. Going to have to save this one and watch it back a few times. Excellent show all around.

Being honest, I think Opfor should have actually had more tickets than Blufor, owing to the fact they were at a disadvantage in pretty much every way. As Rimmy said, the RoE was thrown out, probably after the IED's lacing every single road, so Blufor had a lot of advantages over Opfor. Being able to transport between caches is pretty good for logistics, and blending into the populace only to suddenly pull out a grenade and yeet it at a checkpoint is good, but compared to UH-60's, AH-64's, armoured vehicles and superior infantry armament/armour, Opfor got the short end of the stick and decided to pull a Paul Van Riper and slip the proverbial table. Blufor expected to roll over the map with technical superiority and whatnot, so Opfor ambushed them at their base before they could even start moving out properly. I get it, it's annoying, you're all there to have fun. But when your team has 20 less players, inferior equipment, and no armour, I think a bit of cheese is perfectly acceptable in this kind of sandwich. Plus, those tunnel IED's were awesome, there's basically no way for them to easily clear them out. Now on the other side of the argument, Opfor probably could have done with a little less organization, like fewer radios, but like I said, Opfor seemed to honestly have the shorter end of the stick.

I say that PvP actually sounds more interesting that going up against the AI, and though I've never played ARMA 3, I have heard their AI is not the best no matter how many mods you pile on to make them better. That and real players can and will use actual tactics against you, and if you don't reply in kind, well, that's a free win for whoever is actually using said tactics.
