The Vietnam War was a period marked by intense conflict and military innovation, one of which is still spoken of with awe today: the SOG knife. Standing for Studies and Observations Group, the SOG knife has carved its place in history as one of the most effective and mysterious tools used by U.S. Special Forces. In this blog, we explore the origins, design, and enduring legacy of what many consider "The Most Infamous Knife in the World."
The SOG knife was born out of necessity during the Vietnam War for a multi-functional knife that could meet the unique demands of covert operations. Designed specifically for the Studies and Observations Group-a clandestine ops unit tasked with carrying out covert activities behind enemy lines-the SOG knife was more than just a weapon; it was a survival tool in the treacherous jungles of Vietnam.
What sets the SOG knife apart is its distinctive design. Typically featuring a fixed blade with a serrated edge and a sleek, durable handle, the SOG knife was engineered for both combat efficiency and versatility. Its blade, often made from high-quality carbon steel, provided unmatched sharpness and durability, essential for the harsh conditions of guerrilla warfare.
The handle of the SOG knife was crafted with precision, usually from stacked leather or a tough synthetic, offering a firm grip in the wet, muddy conditions of Vietnam. This design not only made it effective in close combat but also versatile for other tasks like cutting through dense foliage or handling materials.
The SOG knife quickly became a favored tool among the U.S. Special Forces, not just for its effectiveness in combat but also for its utility in survival situations. It was a tool that operatives could rely on, whether for ambushes, rescues, or simply preparing a meal in the field.
Today, the SOG knife is not just a piece of military equipment but a collectible item treasured by historians, military enthusiasts, and knife collectors alike. Its mystique is enhanced by the secretive nature of the operations it was part of, making each knife a piece of history.
Modern tactical knives owe much to the design principles established by the Vietnam-era SOG knife. Many features that were innovative at the time, such as the serrated edge and ergonomic handle, have become standard in the industry.
The Vietnam-era SOG knife remains one of the most iconic symbols of U.S. military ingenuity. Its design and functionality have set a standard in both military and civilian knife production. As we look back on the tools that shaped modern warfare, the SOG knife stands out not only for its physical design but for its indelible mark on the history of combat and survival gear.
For enthusiasts and collectors, the SOG knife is more than just a tool; it's a testament to the ingenuity and spirit of those who served during one of the most challenging periods in modern history. Its story continues to captivate and inspire, a true legend forged in steel and shadow.

Have a sog recondo for almost 20yrs now. Got it when they were made in the USA. I think Washington or Oregon, before they outsourced to china. Buying point was same hardness material as the turrets on our battleships.

I do have that knife and I like it. Part of my semi EDC. The blade shape, grip, and glass breaker (or what I would call a 'glass jaw breaker') is what I wanted.

I picked up one of these COMMANDOs a couple of years ago. The only 2 things I'm not excited about both involve the sheath. First, the retention system on the sheath does NOT grip tightly enough, and the knife slips out of it very easily. I am trying to find someone locally who knows how to work with this material and have them tighten the pressure of the retention system for me. The only other problem with the sheath is that one of the screws that retains the belt clip has fallen out the first time I wore it and is now lost. I contacted customer service to get another screw and they wanted me to return the knife and sheath, and once they received it, they would send me another one. I'm going to source the screw myself and get a few extras just in case I need them. Then, I am going to use a small droplet of red LocTite, and hopefully, that's going to solve this issue. As for the knife itself, it is a BEAST!!! I definitely will pass it on to one of my Grandchildren when I die! Until then, I double dog DARE someone to try to take it from me!!!!! I have a few other TRS knives and I absolutely LOVE THEM! 3 of them are my EDC gear (I don't believe we can afford too be cautious these days and carry without at least a couple of backups!) Thank you, fellers, for providing these ultra high-quality knives for us! They absolutely provide a great level of a secure feeling for me! I live within a few miles of a VERY gun unfriendly state, and they do not recognize my lifetime PPCW permit reciprocity outside of my vehicle. This said if someone were to jump me, I would be forced to ask him to wait until I get in my truck so I can access and utilize my sidearm. If I use it while I'm outside of my truck, I will be rewarded for my self protection action with at least 15 years in one of their "Iron Bar Hiltons." That just doesn't sound like my idea of a good time, and I am certainly too old to take an ass beating these days!!!! Thanks again!!!!!

We fixed that issue in the last few production runs. Email our support at order@trs-order.com and let them know you need a replacement sheath. I'll give them the heads up. Use your RU-vid handle (@danimal0921) in the request and they'll send it out to you on the house. We appreciate your business.
