A great informational video. Thanks for the effort you put into it. You might have mentioned, while in-country, a soldier (Army, for non-military readers) would wear his unit patch on his left shoulder, 1st Aviation Brigade in my case, and then wear it on his right shoulder after completion of his tour of duty in-country. Public Law 107-314 of 2 December 2002 stipulates that personnel who were awarded the Armed Forces Expeditioanry Medal (AFEM) for their participation in Operation FREQUENT WIND, during the period 29 to 30 April 1975, may elect the Vietnam Service Medal (VSM) in lieu of the Armed Forces Expeditioanry Medal (AFEM) for such service. However, no person shall be entitled to both awards for the same service.

My father was killed in action, December 16, 1970. My mom recently gave me a box of medals and other effects owned by my dad during his military career. I would like to organize them in a more dignified manner. May I send pictures of what I have?

That private's rank looks more like a Private(E-2) with one stripe than a PFC(E-3) stripe plus rocker.

From August 5, 1920, to May 28, 1968, the rank insignia for private first class was a single chevron, per War Department Circular No. 303. On May 28, 1968, the insignia was changed to its current form, consisting of a single chevron with one arc. Prior to the change both E-1 & E-2 were slick sleeve.

I don’t have my grandfathers dd214 I do have his display case he was with the 173 when they first went to Vietnam. He has both the armed forces expeditionary with no stars and Vietnam campaign with 1 star looking at wiki for approved campaigns shows it might be right. Would he be ok showing the armed force’s expeditionary for his time in Vietnam from may-July 65 for Vietnam general service then is campaign with 1 star for Vietnam defense after July through December 65 and Vietnam counter offensive December 65 through June 66?
