Always love the show. Mick with regards to your roses they are the telecaster of the horticultural world; the original, the most beautiful and virtually indestructible. The goals for pruning are to get rid of dead and diseased stems, remove stems that touch each other and to provide a pleasing shape. There is no "right time" and don't be too precious. As with guitar gear there are no hard and fast rules... You just have to try it out. I'm glad to see that I'm not the only one for whom appreciating beautiful plants and a cranked guitar sound are mutually exclusive. Thanks for all your great shows.

Hi Dan Hi Mick, Well, after an episode with a grass pedalboard, an other containing a geranium overdrive, Mick seems inspired to take up fretboard farming. Mr Justin B left a nice guide to prune roses, i would like to add that you should cut just above an outward facing bud located in the knots. Its the thicker part of the branches, the slimmer parts are called limbs. Good luck!

Regarding 18 pedals on a board: totally doable! The smart way to do it to is to run everything through a soundsculpture switchplate. Is a looper that/ switcher system (all buffered) that gives you insane unmatched routing options via computer or directly on the unit. Got a switchblade 8F on my board and you can send different fx to different amps in every preset/ sound (!!). Heck you could send fx to 8different amps. I even managed to run any logic plugin into my loop chain and can send to the dry chain or into wet amp chain in combination with a lehle p-split reamp box (ebtech or radial might have some stuff too). A rack unit at home like the switchblade gl with 16loops would be the king way but a simple 8loop unit on the board would give you all you need if you hook em up in a smart way. 500$ for pwr supply, 500$ for self soldering cables (evidence cables rock or go perfect and solder mogami and maybe a pedalsnake to keep it slick), 450$ for a massive board incl flight case and boom! Request to Mick and Dan: can you make a show where you demonstrate dry/ wet through a line box (like the one by david bray or suhr)? Its the way Henderson, Landau and other legends do it, so it might be territory worth exploring for you guys too. You guys rock and I love the show!! 🤘🏾🕶👌🏽

People _want_ to think some multi effects sound "digital"... If the Mobius for example can replicate most modulation needs, your chase is gone. It steals the journey.. So some people will argue it's failure simply to keep their journey alive. Sure, you can pull out some univibes that sound a little sweeter, but to say it sounds "digital" is a quite obscure stretch. If it works for you rock on, if it doesn't, rock on. I love my Strymon gear and am an owner of a Mobius. I'm also the owner of a Spectravibe for it's analog vibrato and univibe textures. I also have analog tremolo on my amp... But I find the Mobius tremolo is actually better sounding to my ears.. even though it's digital. It is not cut and dry. I was so upset the first time I tried analog delays only to find that this crazy magic is _barely_ better than, and often not even as good as the sound of some digital effects. I use my El Cap far more than my Tonal Recall RKM. TLDR: Effects are all subjective, use other's opinions to help you along, but don't view them as absolute truths. You may agree with 70% of the norm and find that the other 30% is completely different.. and as Devo says... That's good!

To the guy who has 18 pedals and plays at home, then if love good tone you absolutely need good power and a switcher. I did good power about 3 years ago and added a switcher at Christmas. Both make a big difference to noise and tone. Oh, and get down to 10 pedals so you have one per loop in the switcher (or 8 or 5 or whatever).

You can switch presets on the Volante without using midi, if I’m correct you hold the favorite button and then tap one of the tape heads to switch to the preset, but I don’t know how to save a preset Also, I think you can use the Volante as a loop, you can loop a chord progression and then just hold the infinite button. I’m pretty sure it won’t degrade and anything you play won’t layer on top, I’m pretty sure at least.

To add to the tone/inspiration thing. I really can’t stand the arbitrary disputes people have over this. Great music and art comes from an inspired individual, so whatever gets that particular person inspired is what they need to manifest something beautiful. The thing is, that’s always in flux and relative to the person. And yes, much of that may be psychological but so what? Since when are humans objective creatures with a gods eye view of the world? It’s a ridiculous assumption. We are as much the stories we live and abide by as we are the physical, matter-of-fact things we are. Yes, there are some players who can be inspired enough by the music alone that it seems whatever they are playing is irrelevant but even guys like Jack Pearson (who is famous for this) can be seen as giddy and enamored as ever whilst holding an original V or one of the vintage guitars Bonamassa gave him. This is all to say, play what inspires you and gets you in your happy place and you will make better art, it’s a feedback loop.

I cut mine pretty low to the ground sometime after they stopped blooming. Cut away dead wood first, and from there prune to encourage the shape you want for the plant. I found roses tend to crowd themselves and need help spreading growth out. If I remember correctly, try for 3 or maybe 4 main stalks. They seem nearly impossible to kill, so I wouldn't worry over it much. Also, I'm a total hack gardener. So heed better advice as you find it.

Hey Mick...the rose related subject. Good time to prune them is when new growth starts to appear on them. Majority of mine now have new growth appearing so i’ll be pruning them any time now. Good rule of thumb is to cut away the oldest stems first and any weak spindly or damaged stems too. Roses are really hardy plants so don’t worry about them too much. Happy gardening 😊👍🏻

Hurrah, I’ve had a major breakthrough in my ‘tone quest’. I put new strings (D’Addario NYXL) on two guitars (mex tele and a resissue of an SG-shaped Les Paul ). I cleaned the electronics in both with contact cleaner. And I took turns plugging them straight into a Princeton 65 reissue. I set the volume and eq to taste for each guitar. And it sounded effing inspiring. Having put together a pedal board over the past few years, including pedals suggested by TPS, there was something lovely about this plug and play vibe. Lesson learned: get the core sound right and add pedals for colour (or not). But don’t rely on pedals to ‘fix’ anything. All the best, Andrew

Hello Dan and Mick: As part of becoming interested in pedals and effects and researching and building my own pedalboard, I created an Excel (Windows)/Numbers (Apple) database that tracks/includes every episode of TPS, beginning with the first one on February 27, 2015. The database includes information on every pedal reviewed, a hyperlink to each episode, guest interviewed, and amps and guitars used by the two of you. Over the years I've continued to maintain it as a matter of course and it's current. TPS fans have requested such a database and you yourselves have talked about it and, well, I have already done this. I wanted to offer it to you guys and TPS fans for their/your use - as kind of a thanks for the show, which I obviously really enjoy. You can do anything you like with it and/or modify it in any way that you like. All the information comes from TPS’s (and TheGigRig's) RU-vid channels and watching each episode. If you have any questions feel free to ask or email me. Thanks.

Street Fighter! The music Dan's humming at the beginning is Ken's Theme! I really love studying music from late 80's video games, because a LARGE percentage of memorable music to gamers came from this time. Why? The hardware limitations meant a larger focus on melodies. Many modern games (particularly remakes and sequels) have soundtracks consisting mostly of re-orchestrations of 30 year old tunes. (shameless plug, my EP "Elements" came out of me diving deep into this study. One-man project that has tunes I will stand beside, but middling production. You can stream it for free on my channel)

Just FYI, to access multiple presets for the Volante, Strymon sells the MultiSwitch Plus for US$129. It's a 3 button footswitch that can control 3 assigned parameters or presets on 1 pedal or 1 on 2 or 3 Strymon pedals.

I think Strymon should make a proper 19" rackmount version of the Volante for the studio, as it could be so useful and inspiring for the things it can do with recorded tracks - basically, every old tape trick in the book at your fingertips.

Mark Hammer I thought the Magneto was just a 4 Head tape delay, with the looper and spring reverb. The drum Head delay makes the Volante a bit different.

Could not possibly agree more regarding a tone that inspires you and the effect on your playing. Had my latest revelation when I played my Les Paul through my new Bad Bob Boost (I wonder where I got that idea from) into my AM modded OD9 into my Wampler Pantheon... Hairs were standing on end...!!

Hi Mick, I'm in Canada and from what I know and have done myself, this is pretty accurate....I clipped it from Better Homes and Gardens lol........ In general, you will be pruning rose bushes just before the plant breaks dormancy after spring's final frost. This will be early in the year in warm climates, and anytime between January and April in cold climates. If it's old roses you are tending, prune them after blooming. They bear flowers on last year's wood. When rose pruning, cut away the dead wood first-it will help you "see" the shape of the plant without distraction. It's a good idea to visit a public rose garden and find specimens of roses you are growing. Note how the gardeners have pruned roses of the same type. In cold-winter climates, pruning roses in spring is often reduced to one option: Simply cut back the wood that was killed in winter. In warm climates, pruning can be done at any of three levels, depending on your purpose. Severe pruning (cut to leave three or four canes, 6 to 10 inches high) produces fewer but larger blooms. Moderate pruning (five to 12 canes cut to 18 to 24 inches) makes for a larger bush. And light pruning (less than one-third of the plant is thinned out) increases the number of short-stemmed flowers that will be produced.

I didn’t comment on the original vid, but I’ve got to say...the Volante sounded absolutely sublime. Well worth the hefty asking price. Unfortunately, it seems to have sold out EVERYWHERE. I will be getting one when they become available. That said, I’m still waiting for my fecking color drive, ordered 3 months ago. So patience is a necessary virtue when following this channel!

This is for Dan. Could you do a show on your home practice rigs? In an episode some time ago you talked about two different ones. Is one of those using the big trees from audio kitchen? I've been fascinated by that thing for a while and would love to hear your opinion about it.

WTF is that digital display unit doing besides distracting me from this show. That's framing 101- don't have something in the background taking away the focus of this gambling rambling duo. They need all the help they can get.

I don't know man. I like pedals. Little stomp boxes that do a great thing. I'm not at all attracted to these laptop-sized things with myriad knobs that do a million things. Too much fiddlery not enough "Hey, I wonder what this one sounds like!?"

It was a great show it is too bad that the Gurus Echo Sex 2 with it's real tube preamp and the Foxgear Echosex Baby that they designed and sells for $115.00 USD and the sound is in the same league. The Gurus is warmer and fatter sounding.

I live in a temperate but dryer and more variable climate, similar though - always mind location when it comes to gardening advise. I think we can assume your varieties are sensitive for cold snaps, mine maybe tougher. Varieties matter. Generally fall pruning is most risky and mid spring the safest. Shoulder seasons, when might get a cold snap within a few weeks of pruning can kill. All these ideas are based on the fact pruning tells plant to grow and this is dangerous if a hard freeze comes when the plant isn’t dormant - this is the central theory. That allows that if the plant is dormant, dead off winter, while snow is on the ground or temps are under freezing you can also prune safely as the plant won’t respond with growth. This is great because the plant doesn’t resist and spring back with growth. In spring you can prune but often the “empire strikes back” in spring and you get more plant exactly where you wanted to remove it. For this reason winter pruning it the most effective. There is one more rule: if you trim all branches even you get less resistance.

I'll have grab some head phones eventually. Speaking of cheap Tape Echo pedals I recently grabbed a Gauss Tape Echo and have been pleasantly surprised just how great it sounds.

Looking forward to the spring reverb show. Tell me you tried out a Catalinbread Topanga? I figured if it was good enough for Kirk Fletcher, it was good enough for me, but it'd be great to see it put through its paces in the context of what else might be available today. (=

It would be great if you could install the Galaxy Tape Echo (RE-201 model) in your UA interface and include that in the RE comparisons. The 14-day demo may be enough?

Brilliant. Really sensible, practical advice about the compromises that we have to make. And some love for Mesa Eng. who make great amps for everyone, not just for the Triple Rec metal shredders...

Thank you for addressing my question about how to manage ground loops and amp phase issues when using a stereo pedal output. That is why you guys rock! Mick - Prune once in December and you're good to go! BTW, I'm great with 1:15 videos on a great subject like the one last week.

I have one Dumble bucket-list dream: cranked, driven hard with a metal zone (preferably with an old noisy power supply...and unshielded old strat pups, maybe playing the Ramones' Beat on the Brat...Dan playing, after at least 4 large beers!).
