This video warmed my heart. You may not realize how you come across in your videos, a humble, warm-hearted man who puts himself out there to help others and expects nothing in return. You make interesting projects that I along with others can relate to. Your videos both entertain and inspire others to take on projects that they may not have otherwise done. I enjoy how you show your occasional mistake and how to work around it. I’m glad that you get these unexpected gifts, it shows how much you are appreciated and have made an impact on people’s lives. Keep it up! Wishing you many years of health and laughter. Mike USA

Gday Mike, The one thing I don't do is change for the camera, What you see is excatly how I am off camera although I do swear more off camera, Ive always showed my mistakes simply because someone watching can learn from this and I believe finding a way around fixing the mistake is a learning curve in itself, if your not making mistakes then your not doing much, Truely appreciate your kind words mate, Cheers

Mate, you deserve all those gifts. You are the real deal , there is so much bs on the net but you are the real deal . You cannot fake the passion have with machining and it clearly shines though. Fantastic viewer/subscriber donations, well done all, most magnanimous. Ref layout blue, I use a magnum sharpie pen, nib is about 9mm wide, or on larger items, I use some matt black spray, or other dark colour, Interesting comments on using Shellac flakes, never heard of that. The old way to mark steel is using Copper Sulphate, its a blue solution, but drys to a copper colour, this was used at college in the late 70's. Big twist drills are less used now, ref indexable drills being a lot cheaper and more efficient. Great video Matty, thanks for sharing 👍
@MattysWorkshop

Some very nice gifts there. Well deserved too, as I appreciate how much effort it takes to churn out a video every week. Thanks. As for using the mill in horizontal mode, if you're like me you'll absolutely love it! I have an Elliott Omnimill with an INT30 horiz spindle. The finish I get from horizontal cutters knocks spots off a vertical. The metal removal rate, esp with a stagger toothed cutter, can't be achieved with the vertical head either. I run both motors off one vfd and have a 3 pole 2 way switch to flick between h and v modes. Obviously the motor has to be off before switching, but it works great. Cheers from the UK, Rob

I am 72 yrs old (today actually). Though being in a vastly different HR role in the RAAF for 30 years, I also became a self taught mechanic (though now qualified), self taught machinist (now 9 years in), self taught welder, self taught mower repairer and am still learning whatever needs to be learnt. A few years ago a friend sold up his business, Previously he took raw single cylinder head castings for European trucks, machining all that needed to be done and sold them on the world market. They were machined to better than factory specs - he's not blowing his own trumpet - that's what a factory CEO and chief engineer later told him to his face at a European expo. On closure I bought a universal mill off him. He sold it to me for $2000 even though he could have sold it for $7000. When I told thanks but I did not have the funds, he said pay it off, and pay it off I did over 12 months. He also sold me holders and cutters at similar discounted prices. All these were used in the produced of these first class cylinder heads. Several months later he turned up with some extras - he needed his home double garage cleaned out. What he came with is the same set as yours of Mitutoyo mics (recently calibrated), hardness tester, surface roughness tester, a lot of NT40 tooling with ER32 collet holders, cutters, face mills and other stuff I can't remember. In all about $12,000 worth to replace. I had saved some money but when asked, he wanted nothing for them - absolutely gratis. At home I help a lot of people who are having it tough. I have a 16M x 8M home version of a men's shed and collectively we try to help each other as well as those who are in need. Many times people get helped here by others they have never met. Those others helping have also put their hand on their pocket, buying supplies to do various jobs. None ever wanted to be reimbursed. Those being helped didn't know what to say. Many of them were used to helping others and now they were on the receiving end. I know that feeling. I have also been helped by many, many people in my hour of need. It is very humbling. I have told others that it is easy to be a gracious giver but hard to be a gracious receiver. But when it applies to yourself, it is even harder. Don't get me wrong - we also have a laugh. I give them all a "little bit" of grief and call them all turkeys. You know - "it is hard to soar like like an eagle when you are surrounded by turkeys". However, despite my rule that I can give it to them and the reverse doesn't apply, when they get a chance to give some back, it's slaughter - they give me absolutely no mercy. But would not swap these group of blokes for anyone. Point of all of this. Accept it graciously - not easy, but they all wanted to do it. You've helped others and they now want to help you continue to do that.

I've only had my channel for a little over 18 months and in the last couple of months, I have started getting some pretty generous offers to help me pay for things, like you, I'm retired, but self-funded, and I got absolutely hammered in the 2008-9 financial crisis when I lost 67% of my retirement funds, which limits just how much I can afford to spend on this hobby of mine. Like you, the generosity of our viewers blows my mind at times. Nice set of mics, my dear old dad had a full set of NSK mics, which I inherited, but I'm not sure where they ended up, probably still at the machine shop I had in Brizzy up until I retired back in 2004. With regard to layout dye, when I first left school and later in my 20's, I worked for Whitelaw Engineering in Brisbane, and they used to sell layout dyes in both liquid and spray can variations, it surprised me to hear you say you can't get it in Oz. 👍

I make my own dykem with shellac. The problem I found with Prussia blue based dyes is they're not water or alcohol soluable, so I couldn't get it to mix right with shellac dissolved in alcohol. Mineral spirits seemed to work better for the Prussia blue but worse for the shellac. Fountain pen ink works fantastic with shellac.

Matty, if your after shellac flakes then try Bunnings or Mitre 10 as they both carry it for "French Polishing".

Despite all the woes in the world and all the woke nonsense there is telling us up is down and left is right, there are still some very nice people left who are generous enough to give time and gifts to complete strangers. You may be self taught but if the end product is all that matters, and it is, how you get there or how long it takes is entirely irrelevant. Keep up the good work!

You have some very generous viewers who have sent you some really great gifts there Matty. I'm sure you will put them to good use. I don't know if those taps are for the same purpose, but the use of differential threads that I have seen are when you need to make something move (while turning a threaded shaft) at a smaller distance than the pitch of the thread, per turn. In your case you can have the threads on the same shaft (although one thread is usually a smaller diameter than the other), then the movement will be 1.5mm - 1.25mm. That gives you 0.25mm movement for each rotation. This is useful if your lathe cant cut a .025 pitch thread. It is a bit hard to explain, and I probably have not done a good job of it. But, Mr. Pete has a good video that I watched some time ago. I found the link if anyone is interested. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-ywmRv3I_dAw.html

Awesome. I enjoy your videos. I've never been down your way, would love to sometime. The closest I came to Australia was Japan. I've done machine work for almost 40 years, and I've found there is always more the one way to skin a cat. BTW. What type of weather are you currently having? Have a blessed day.

Love to see you turning that MT4 shank down. Was the steel hard....? Regarding differential threads, I made a big tap wrench years ago. Huge bugger, nearly 700mm/30" long. Used a LH and RH thread on the "squeasy up tight" bit. Worked a treat.

Gday, The shank of the drill wasn't all that hard and very easy to turn, Id like to have a go at making a big ass tap wrench one day, 30" is a whoppa, Thanks for watching, Cheers
