Gday, This is part 2 of the Boring and facing head build, this time round I get the side and gib made and do a quick sub assemble to see how its looking so far, I hope you enjoy the video, Cheers Email - mattysworkshop76@gmail.com.
Well, there's your Masterclass in precision machining. Damn fine work, Matty. Don't worry about the stuff ups...the end product is what counts and what an end product it is! Looking forward to the next part of the build. Cheers.
Great minds think alike mate 👍 4mm press-in ball oiler. Drill through the gib, and make some more ‘oil-retaining-marks’ on the back ( sliding) face of the gib Hey Presto ( hey Presso ? 🤣🤣) That is a big project Matty…. Can’t wait to see all the other ‘bits’, and then the assembly. Keep Punchin’ Robert
I use Igauging things in woodworking and find them to be very good, well made and cheaper than the bigger names. Remember Bob Ross, no mistakes, only happy accidents.
Gday, I have Igaging scales with the touchDRO on my other mill and so far there been good but I haven't heard much about the quill dro, The price is much more inviting then the big name brands, Thanks for watching, Cheers
Matty, that drill spot...it's not a mistake, it's a "feature" now. Drill straight through the gib strip, plug in a small ball oiler...and you've "upgraded" it. Nice work as always !
yes the igageing quill dro is good, beats the hell out of setting a stop on the quill and cracking the table up. on your first hole go slow to hit your number and set your quill stop after. it works great and is a huge time/arm saver. Great video as always, Thanks for doing what you do.
@@MattysWorkshop a quick nut or speed nut for the quill stop is a great combo to go along with the dro as well. can't wait for next weeks vid on this build.
Good work Matty. I made my own quill dro using a commercial scale and my own design of bracket. Wasn’t too difficult and much less expensive than a ready made kit.
Great job Matty. I love how when we do one offs we get small identification marks on them. Makes then individual. Boy you get a great finish. Cheers Mike
Beautiful work Matty, I've been cutting dovetails myself in the last couple of weeks on that project I'm working on, but thank Christ they are in Aluminium, so much easier to work with. 👍
Great job so far Matty. The little bozzo's give it its own character. I use I-gaging scales on both my mills and the lathe with a BluDRO unit bluetoothed to a 7" android tablet. . I have the I-gaging quill unit as well on the mill quill and the lathe tail stock the same as the one you showed. Always works never any problems with any of the I-gaging stuff. Looking forward to the rest of the build. ATB regards from the UK
Gday, Igaging is getting mixed opinions so far in the comments, I have there scales on the other mill with the touch DRO and there been great, appreciate your watching mate, Cheers
Nice job Matty, it looks awesome as usual with your builds. Don't worry about the boo boo. One silly little slip does not detract from it at all mate. Cheers from England, Sam
You deserve a nerve pill Matty you've done brilliantly, highlighting mistakes is the way we learn ourselves and all of us from you. Your processes and ways of working out workarounds is Masterclass.
Gday Matty the project looks pretty good so far, some wild looking setups that's the bit I love using the gear you have to do what you need to get a procedure done and then saying " well at least that worked " at the end. I fitted a cheap no brand quill DRO to my mill when I first got it and in a very short amount of time it seized and would no longer slide. I have an Iguaging digital indicator it's bulky and needs a bit of room to use but the electronics seem to be fine I may look at one of their quill DRO's as well. Always look forward to Thursday's video at Matty's workshop cheers mate.
Gday, working with what's on hand does keep it interesting, I have Igaging scales on the other mill with the touchDRO setup and there been good, I haven't heard much about the quill unit though, Appreciate you watching mate, Cheers
Radiusing makes it look ten times better Matty, hitting the numbers there. Great instructions for the video, adds considerably to the content. Thanks for sharing
Cool project! This is going to be a nice bit of kit, I stumbled across a old but nut much used Narex boring/facing head. Best addition to the workshop since the beer cooler
I really appreciate your detailed approach - like fly cutting all surfaces for good finish before starting - doing the best job possible. You’re really getting superb results and high quality components. Great stuff! Thanks for the detailed explanations! Also appreciate how you obscure the plans to protect the designers ownership - that’s honourable. 👍👍
Gday, if the jobs worth doing its worth doing properly I believe, running the fly cutter over the block only took a few minutes but makes a big difference, Appreciate you watching mate, Cheers
Matty the Mitutoyo Quill DRO I installed on my mill works perfectly. I don't know if a cheaper brand would compare to it. I picked mine up while it was on sale. Ask for a discount, for your channel. You may be surprised of their response. Another great video & job well done. Cheers
Great job Mat. I really like your channel, very straight forward and you don’t cover up the bugger ups! lol Something that helps me with that is a simple sharpie. If you have to drill a series of holes, like you were doing, I simply put a dot approximately where they should be and confirm with drawing. Sometimes it’s so easy to forget from the drawing on the bench to the five steps to the machine! 😮 I work on very expensive aircraft parts and one miss drilled hole can literally cost tens of thousands of dollars!
Good on you mate! Interesting project! Looking forward to seeing how it work! I've found the Igauging read outs reasonable, they've given me good results! All the best!
Great tool idea! When I'm finished with the lathe repair, I will need to make a boring head too. I dont think I will go through the length of making it capable of facing too, but I will maybe take some design ideas from your build. Greatly enjoying your great videos! Cheers.
@@MattysWorkshop I built a boring head for my beyer horizontal mill some time ago, dont use it very often since I got the bridgeport. The old Head is MT3 or 4, won't fit the R8. I'm in the rare position to have multiple mills but only one lathe, which rig now bites me. never mind. Cheers!
I have the Igaging On the Quill of my Index 845 mill and it seems to work good been there more than a year and tests ive done for accuracy show an avereage of .0015 bananas accuracy pretty repeatable good enough for a quill i think .
Gday, I have Igaging scales on the Cincinnati mill with the touchDRO and there been pretty good so far, I just haven't heard to much about the quill setup, thanks for letting me know mate, Cheers
Hello Matty, I sacrificed a digital caliper for mine. I have heard nothing negative about the iGaging though. 'Beats not having anything... Keep posting as we love you videos!
Very nice Matty, I'm looking forward to getting my lathe setup and seeing what I can do with it...I have some precision bits of kit to make that I think will be a challenge and perhaps very interesting to build on camera. (just can't do anything until I get my workshop roof on...)
@@MattysWorkshop thanks, I hope so too, its an uphill battle at the moment. I appreciate honest people such as yourself, channel content is far more interesting when its presented in a personal way instead of trying to make "documentary" type video. I enjoy watching channels that make their own video's not the generic ones that RU-vid "likes" Thanks for sharing things your way
Need advice on a tool I would go to the RU-vid channel of cutting edge engineering and ask Curtis. The guy is a master machinist he is highly knowledgeable and I know he could point you to the right tool for the right price. Dont think of your booboos as mistakes, just call them your signature...;)
Good job mate, looking forward to the next episode. When making jigs, fixtures and tooling I was using reciprocating grinders and a precision mill all with large magnetic chucks. Even with those mistakes were made, nothing huge just irritating ones. When you were tapping those holes I was clenching, natural reaction when taps have snapped on you, luckily we had an EDM company a few doors down which helped us out. Regards to you and the family 👍
Gday, I dont normally show tapping threads because its gone wrong plenty of times, the new UFS spiral taps are a game changer, they weren't cheap but you pay for quality, Thanks for watching mate, Cheers
Great job so far looks great as for your a DRO on your quill,,, i used a digital caliper for a mill i got for the grandkids to learn after 5 different ideas from 5 kids 😂😂 we got one installed works great reads bang on and only thing was that battery dieing maybe that why i give them that caliper just dont use a caliper that dont read good other then that your good to go" MATE" AS yous say there
Very easy just 2 small detachable bracket watch any time you can remove it,,, like I said 5 kids and still there working can't be that bad only if the tool cutters can last that long 😈
@@MattysWorkshop. Just so you know an engineer friend of mine always said it’s never a mistake it’s a design feature, the extra hole is a feature allowing more adjustment. 😇
your eye for tolerances "by eye" is something not teachable to anyone,Matty - the build is comming along nicley, will wait whit anticipation for the next part - Well done mate!
Nice work Matty. I have an I Gauging setup on my Quill. Bit hungry on batteries unlike the Mitutoyo on my BP clone I had. Goes to sleep after a couple of minutes so you have to continually press the on button doing long duration jobs but keeps the setting, no big deal. Easy to install and as you know just cut the scale to length, can't do that with a Mitutoyo.
Gday, It would be nice to have a Mitutoyo but the price tag is a bit large unfortunately, Thanks for letting me know about the Igaging setup mate, Cheers
I have no experience with the Iguaging brand. I bought a Shahe for my quill Z axis. It's as accurate and repeatable as any of my other measuring setups. Including Mitutoyo.
I regretted buying igaging stuff. I had accuracy problems, very poor battery life and one scale the face fell off. You could get a mitutoyo caliper make some brackets and modify it to work. The 6" calipers sell in a high volume so they are reasonably priced. Watch out for fakes though. Thanks for the video!
Gday, Back in full swing again finally, I've still got a few things to sort out on the health side of things but i'm a lot better then what I was mate, Thanks for watching, Cheers
Genuinely enjoying this. Any possibility of a arrangement, between yourself and the designer to share / make available, the plans? Thanks for sharing. Cheers
Look at Mark Pressling he done a a video of installing igauging scales to his bridgeport and i ordered 2 for my little lathe and they have just arrived
coming along really good Matty just a question where do you get those brushes you use for the oil dabing as i have searched up here high and low and no goog i get by using the cheap artist brushes but if the part has any heat in it the buggees ment into a blob and then useless to any one anyway let's know if you can i just love your work am learning from you all the time but still make mistakes along the way can mostly get away with but some end up in the box of shame on me but thankfully only small ones so far nothing to costly keep up your excellent work and teaching of us others along the journey will be quite some time before i tackle something like this as i have no need for one of them big cheers mate
Gday, the brushes are called acid brushes, here’s an eBay link www.ebay.com.au/itm/314375510227?mkcid=16&mkevt=1&mkrid=705-154756-20017-0&ssspo=6r1yf2hlqn-&sssrc=4429486&ssuid=mHCxRNqGSeO&var=&widget_ver=artemis&media=COPY I hope the link works, we all make mistakes but that’s a part of learning, It’s great to hear the videos are helpful mate, appreciate you watching, cheers
Might have missed it, but what brand/ flavour is your drill chuck..I'm looking to upgrade mine so it holds drills and things without that slipping component in it😂
Gday, The drill chuck brand is Hardex, www.ebay.com.au/itm/164759314685?mkcid=16&mkevt=1&mkrid=705-154756-20017-0&ssspo=uBP6rRnjQoO&sssrc=2047675&ssuid=&widget_ver=artemis&media=COPY so far im really impressed with the chuck mate, thanks for watching, Cheers
Thanks mate, I reckon if your impressed with it, it should be a good upgrade...I'll just have to talk the missus into letting me get a mill to go with it🤣
