Feeling lucky to be in a "coin family relationship"...my husband and I are both actively involved in each other's collections, and we do all our shopping together. Too bad there are not more couples sharing the coin hobby!
Hi Ben, My name is Bill and I just watched you as the guest on Polar Currency RoundTable # 7 this evening. You did a great job with the entire panel talking about all different topics on coin and currency collecting.👍 As for this video I just watched thanks for explaining again about coins that are cleaned. A little bit of history, as I been collecting coin’s since I was 14 back in January of 1973. My 1st coin and still have is the 1916 Mercury dime. Paid 30 cents for it as I remembered. My older brother Jack got me interested in coin collecting. I still collect them as I also started to collect Currency notes as of July of 2020. I have a pretty good start with some good notes already. I subscribed to your channel and look forward to seeing more of your videos when I can. I purchased what was arguably a cleaned peso ( PCGS slab ) from OPC a few years ago for a very fair price. A lot of pesos later, this stands alone as a favorite. As Ben stated in the video about it, "It's just a nice looking old peso." I learned a lot from the purchase of that coin. And Ben essentially taught me not to put a price on everything. Thanks for all you do, Sir. I truly appreciate the hobby more since I found your channel.
Amen to liquidating your own collection before you pass away! So many collectors believe their family actually WANT the coins upon their death. What usually happens is they have no idea of what to do with them, don’t want them, and have to deal with the stress of trying to liquidate them with very little interest or information. I’ve asked my kids, for instance, and they have absolutely no interest in my coins. I’ll leave each of them one special coin to remember dear-ol’-dad and give them the money raised from a properly liquidated collection.
great idea, many times the inhertors have NO clue of proper market value and can't even realize a sale price that the dead collector would've been able to sell for since the collector has some knowledge about their market value
i have noticed some popularity with the OLD first and second generation ANA coin holder aka early ANACS graded holders, anyone else like them? the first gen holders have a Genie Lamp on the back and mention the PNG aka Professional Numismatic Guild
Re. Rim Filing, I saw (online) an interesting example of this last night: a 1907 $20 High Relief, Wire Rim that was "Damaged, Rims Filed -- NGC Details. AU...." and sold for only $6600 in Jan '23. Seemed cheap(ish) for an otherwise good looking coin, where only the obverse had been filed. (You can easily find the Heritage A. sale listing that has good photos if you want to look it up.)
I thought it was here on your channel that John Albanese gave the reason. I know I saw him on a few other channels before CAC rolled out grading and thought the reason given for not stickering ANACS was due to the rim's edge not being visible in the ANACS holders.
If there is a real physical reason CAC can’t sticker an ANACS coin, then ANACS needs to change the holder. If it’s more an excuse not to legitimize ANACS, then CAC should be sued for antitrust!
Hi Ben. I'll be there! I have only had one coin submitted for stickering by CAC. It received a sticker, so that makes my submission successful 100% for CAC acceptance for stickering-a pretty good percentage if you ask me. Of course, I had a pretty good dealer submit that coin. They are lucky to get 5% of their coins stickered, though. I am at an age where I figure I am more likely to die than not, so I wonder about the value of my certified coin that has been cleaned, had the rim filed, and has the dreaded designation of questionable color. Bend over, CAC is driving. Albanese is looking to get more money from coin geeks. I hope CAC will consider selling $1.50 hotdogs and coke at coin shows to the coin geeks that signed up for membership to show their appreciation.
Acquisition is the name of the game. Tried and true. Looking for another big payday. If you could use your experience and reputation as a reputable grader/dealer then why not go through the motions and let the fish in the sea help you build up a company and sell it. I would if I could.
Another excellent video! At some point this year I want to submit a few coins to CACG... last time I checked authorized dealers weren't close by... plus I like doing it myself, I can then help someone else in the future!
I was fortunate to get CACG submission privileges last year. I sent in some coins. CACG grades very tough, but I did get one coin back as MS-70 from CACG. CACG offers fast grading and a very streamlined process (a much more professional experience than PCGS or NGC in my humble opinion).
Nothing like getting hosed Midwest style, but getting hosed in New Jersey is normal, traveled there in the 80s & 90s and never saw so many short-change artists Ever; know why they make fun of New Jersey on late night tv, Jay Leno, Johnny Carson, etc. lol
I find the whole cleaned coin thing fascinating. I have some very rare seated quarters 1868, 1869, etc. do the rare coins have a better resale value even though cleaned than a more common coin?
I love the coin talk this channel is the best. It has a good veriety of videos and you alway get into the nitty gritty. Ive just got 3 coins back 2 from 1600s one got ms61 and outher is rare 3 know in census bristol mint sixpence au55 beauty's on my RU-vid short if anyone want to look. ❤ thank you Ben .
Rim filing is/was a person literally stealing metal by filing a little off the edge of a coin. Then continuing to do so with subsequent coins until they had enough shavings to justify redeeming for perceived value. These people would then use those filed coins as if they had full value. Generally speaking, this was done to silver and gold coins during hard times of history to gain enough metal to buy food. So it's been said, anyway, I wasn't there and work hard to avoid being in such a lousy financial position.
Oh, I'll definitely take the Green Beans or my one Gold, but for grading, CACG has ALREADY shot themselves in the foot BIGTIME, and as I have over 400 slabs, of which %95 is PCGS the rest NGC, I wouldn't waste my money sending coins to CACG just to be massively disappointed. PCGS is critical enough. Can't tell you how many questionable color details I've gotten back from PCGS, cracked them out, and they straight grade at NGC. Almost every time.
@@HTW_1 Just my opinion… I believe you have this backwards. PCGS and NGC have shot themselves in the foot. You literally made the CACG sales pitch. If you don’t get the grade you want you flop it over to the other company (from pcgs/ngc and vice versa)… from what I see, CACG is holding coin grading to a higher more consistent standard. I’ll trust in Johnny A’s standards🫡
That's the reason I'm purchased pcgs and need to get a bunch about 60 plus coin I feel is worth the trouble my wife and kids can look up the number and have some kind of idea the value. Mi non grade I can just see it now a purchaser will just call it a really low grade show them in a Red book and they're screwed. This is my biggest worry for selling coins. Because grading is so arbitrary especially the cap bust draped bust coins I enjoy.
I agree. Those early coins were often softly struck and it is hard to tell if the strike is flat or the coin is worn. Especially circulated examples that lack luster.
Re. CAC & ANACS: what would be John Albanese's motivation for not wanting to "legitimize" ANACS? This is what I don't understand, if he's not doing it out of spite or for some actual material reward. He just doesn't want to elevate ANACS such that CAC would have to compete against three (3) other grading companies instead of two (2)? The business of this hobby is so weird lol.
avoid cleaned coins as a collector. only dealers make money off clean coins if they can find some novice collector who does not know better. unless it is a rare coin stay away from problem coins!
