May monthly meeting was held on Thursday, May 9, 2024. This meeting was open for suggestions of plays so we called it "Viewers Choice" and Joshua Schroeder, Official Institute (OI) chairman of the board, pulls videos on the fly based on suggestions by meeting participants.
OI meetings are conducted to assist basketball officials, new and veteran alike, and teach them how to see and rule on a specific situations to improve the skill and ability of officials. OI believes watching and collaborating on videos in a group setting increases retention of information and reinforces rule knowledge. Asking questions while analyzing video is a valuable learning tool and by watching plays repetitively, helps officials to remember what is talked about regarding philosophies and practical application of rules in real game situations. All videos shown are actual high school basketball videos.
This online meeting includes 7 video clips all of which encompass some sort of signal, sequence of signals or mechanics used.
0:00 - Intro
2:36 - Pass and Crash was passed on but then quickly followed by a block call on a driving player along the endline.
10:04 - Another pass and crash. Let's talk about positioning.
15:33 - Closely guarded play. Was it a good call or could/should it have been nothing?
22:13 - Closely guarded play that could possibly have been broken by dribbler.
33:58 - Triple Whistle. What happened?!!?
47:05 - Double whistle on a held ball situation. Positioning of officials. Who takes this ruling?
55:27 - FIGHTING PLAY
1:13:08 - Meeting schedule for the next season.
Watching video clips is a good way to stay connected to the skill of officiating basketball but education and learning can more effectively be attained doing it in a group with some direction from a key speaker. Remembering specific rules and application of those rules is easier when visual aids are used to present in a way that is easy to listen to and understand.
The Officials Institute, and their monthly video review meetings, create a fun environment that allows participants to speak up and voice their opinions on plays without negative retribution or rebuttals. Everyone's opinion is worth something and adds to the overall learning experience that everyone should strive for, regardless of years of experience. Breaking down film in slow motion and freeze frames helps to "retrain our brain" so when we see the same plays in real time we are in a better position mentally to get the call right.
