My father died some years back in Northern Michigan. He was embalmed but it was a bad winter, and it would have been impossible to break the ground in that tiny town. In the spring, when the funeral was held, they offered a viewing. I declined, though others did not. My stepmom told me I made a good decision.

Thanks ladies, I enjoyed this episode as it struck home with me. We lost Mum two years ago, tragically in theatre during an op to mend a broken leg, so a real shocker to lose her. Obviously, the coroner got involved and we had to wait for p/m. Luckily, we were allowed to make an appointment to see Mum in the hospital morgue, although the room she was in was just like a chapel of rest. She still had her tubes in etc as they weren’t allowed to remove before pm. When she eventually arrived at the funeral home, we were advised not to see her and accepted that. You were right, you can’t unsee what you see and I now have that last image in my head. You have settled my mind thank you ladies. Hertfordshire Uk

Hi Terri, we are so truly sorry to hear such a very sad story of the loss of your mum 😞 it's so bloody heartbreaking. I see to many people who died on the operating table 😞 we are so so sorry, we have no words to make you feel better 😞 We hope you are looking after yourself and have lots of support around you. Hi Trecy and Trish I'm glad I found your channel. I'm learning so much! I am glad you covered this topic because here in the United States in Ohio where I'm at, the funeral home I've been to made it out to seem like we didn't have a say in viewing. It was the deceased person was not viewable and that's it!!! 😢 I'm so glad I now know I have the right to view my loved one if I want to!!! ❤ Thank you for sharing!! Stay happy and healthy! Much Love to you both!

Yes to a podcast! New subscriber here, and I am finding your content extremely interesting. My grandmother worked in a funeral home in North Carolina, USA for many years, and I used to go to work with her a lot when I was a kid. She was front office staff, so of course I didn't actually ever go into the embalming room when there were bodies in there, but I've always found deathcare to be fascinating.

Another senditive subject handled with honesty and compassion. I don't think anyone could complain about the answer you have. Seems to me there were far too many variables to be more specific. I think asked the same question some people in the industry migh just say "Funeral Directors don't advertise no viewing without good reason" and leave it there. At least you went the extra mile and explained the process that would make a viewing less traumatic. I hope you girls are filming in batches of videos 'cos you've been wearing the same outfits for a while. Cal manages to change his outfit. 😉

Going back to a funeral home is pointless if you live in NZ. Lying, despicable funeral home had a family member in their words ON ICE for three months due to a coronial enquiry. Then they ........in their words......crated her up and took her to the furnace. 1983. And still a traumatic memory even now. The lying bastard himself is now dead. Hopefully enjoying a thermonuclear afterlife. You two ladies are marvelous. Thank you for your compassion and education of your viewers.

My mom yes yes but my mom took no pain medication She said she wanted to always know what's going on But the Study meds, they gave her really destroyed her body I just glance at her because i just couldn't take her death even though I knew it was coming I should miss my loved ones I also took care of two young brothers who passed from cancer and now I'm talking care of my husband and I will never get over them passing But thank you for taking care of our loved ones

This is really interesting! Just found your channel. My dad had his brain removed for autopsy. So it was 3 months before he was cremated. He wasnt embalmed. The undertaker did say a viewing wouldn’t be advised. So i kind of guessed at what he would have looked like. You use the term skin slipping. What does that actually mean? Do people start to get mold on them? Like food in a fridge?
@Areyoudyingtoknow
@Areyoudyingtoknow Год назад
Hi, so very sorry to hear you have lost you dad 😢 sending you all our best 🌹🌹 Skin slip is when the skin begins to separate from the underlying tissue, often caused by putrefaction and bacterial growth after death. The skin just becomes delicate and tears easier and our skin holds in liquid, so when it tears it leaked fluid. Yes bodies will eventually get mold on them if not treat. We are all organic just like a piece of fruit that you have seen go rotten the human body god through the same changes naturally. Take good care of yourself 💚💚

@Areyoudyingtoknow
@Areyoudyingtoknow Год назад
Hiya, we are sorry for your loss and send hugs to you and your family. There is no way of us telling, without knowing all of the details, if they would be viewable, I'm sorry, but to give you an idea, the most I would be able to keep an unembalmed body for with constant application of cream etc would be a month provided there weren't other circumstances involved... If the person has had certain medications before death, if there was a delay between when they died and when they were refrigerated and the treatments done after death by the coronor and the mortician would all contribute to how they looked so long after death. It would be best for you to ask the funeral home if they are viewable and if not, why not. They may have been embalmed in which case, you may be fine to view, but you won't know until you ask.💜 I hope you can find peace in this awful situation. Sending our best wishes xx

In Sweden Most deseased have to wait in the fridge for at least 4 weeks, since most funerals only take place on fridays (for convenient reasons),and to my knowledge its not common practice to enbalm deseased People here(at least none in my friend/family zones ever been offered one). It strikes me now, when seeing this episode, that there ought to be an awful smell of decomposition when walking around the coffin saying goodbye, right? Or is it just masked with something? I would love to know how the procedures are done different in different parts of the world. I think in general, in Scandinavia, death is really taboo topic. You never hear anything about Whats being done after your dead up until the day of the burial. Makes death even more mystic and scary 😱 Btw Im all for a pod cast. I have a 30 minute drive to/from work every day, so that would really brighten those long drives. Have a merry christmas. Hope People never run out of question for you🎅/Robin
@Areyoudyingtoknow
@Areyoudyingtoknow Год назад
Hi Robin, thank you for sharing all that information. Wow had no idea about the way the funeral industry works in Sweden how bizarre to only have funerals mainly on one day 🤷‍♀️ I would really think that a lot of chemicals are been used in the coffin and funeral homes to mask the smells if no Embalming take place and deceased are held for such a long time. This is why we started this channel to get people talking about the one thing that will effect us all yet lots of cultures just don't want to talk about it and keep it hidden behind closed doors 🤷‍♀️ Thanks, we are trying to see if we can fit in a podcast too. Thank you for your support and watch this space. You and your family have a wonderful Christmas and New year 🎄🥳 take care 💚💚

Hi Symone, never had that request before but if you wanted that done I personally would not have a problem with the tattoo artist coming in to do that. It would be better on embalmed skin as this firm's the skin up not sure if it would work well on un-embalmed skin as this can tear easier. It's definitely a different request, I have only had the request of removing a tattoo for the family to keep. Thank you for your question 😊 take care 💚💚
