Bender B. Rodriguez It seems the best casting decision are made either as a second choice or out of desperation. Can you imagine Will Smith as Neo, or Dougray Scott as Wolverine, or Tom Selleck as Indiana Jones? Those were all the first choices, and yet it's hard to imagine anyone other than Keanu Reeves, Hugh Jackman, or Harrison Ford playing those parts!
couldnt have said it better myself....his performance was truly legendary...the chemistry he had with Orlando and John (Legolas and Gimli) truly made the films as enjoyable as they are
Not surprised to see Viggo so loved and respected. The LOTR appendicies have an amazing story involving Viggo, the horse he rode in the films, and the woman who took care of the horse and horses. She had developed a strong bond with the horse Viggo rode. When filming was over the horses were to be auctioned off to buyers. Viggo purchased the horse and gave it to the caretaker. His comment was that they should be together... such an amazing gesture. Few of us ever get the opportunity to be so kind, humble and generous. Even fewer take the opportunity when presented.
I still cannot understand why Viggo Mortensen has not won an Oscar. He is such an underrated actor. Eastern Promise, Green Book, Captain Fantastic, Hildalgo, LOTR, The Road, GI Jane and History of Violence were tremendous roles and acting.
The Oscars are in major part political. You need to campaign, shake hands, talk to the right people. It's an election, and they want a personal connection. It's possible to get an acting nomination without doing so. It's extremely unlikely to get a win. Mortensen does not strike me as one who cares enough to campaign, or is in the right Hollywood social circles to come to the voters minds.
Viggo's got an even longer resume; every so often you'll watch something like The Prophecy or Carlito's Way & suddenly say, "what dafuq, that's Aragorn!"
I've heard that Viggo Mortensen was offered the chance to play as Aragorn again as a cameo in the Hobbit films and that he turned them down because it wasn't accurate to the books. If that actually happened, my respect for him went up considerably.
Aragon couldn't have appeared in the hobbit movies as they took place 80 years before the events of lord of the rings...Bilbo had the ring and it prolonged his life as it did gollums.
GER GEMINI In the books Aragorn was 88 years old when he became king and died at the age of 210. He mentions being 87 in the movies. Being one fo the Dunedain he's blessed with a long lifespan. But the timeline in the movies is a little different from the books. After Bilbo leaves the Shire, Gandalf is supposed to have left for 17 years before telling Frodo that he's carrying the one ring. The movies skip this part. This means that Aragorn is 27 in the Hobbit movies, even though he should be only 11 in the book.
pateuvasiliu No, no they didn't. They were going to cast Stuart Townsend (and in fact had cast him.) He even did some swordsmanship training with the Marshal Arts trainers for Lord of the Rings.
Viggo as Aragorn is just one of those perfect casts. Like RDJ as Ironman, Ewan McGregor's Obi-wan, Heath Ledger as The Joker... Just amazing and extremely rare.
its true and funny how they recasted the role. before viggo a much younger man was casted only until jackson realized that he was too young. when viggo was contacted they already were shooting i think.
Viggo was Aragorn. His character just as a person is very similar to Aragorn. He’s extremely respectful and highly regarded by his peers and loves fiercely. Tough as nails and one of the best sort of people you’ll come across. Aragorn was the best of men and Viggo lived up to that standard!
Check out the cinemas near you, they might to this kind of specials. I go to see a marathon of all three movies during one night every year. And everytime it's sold out a good six/seven months in advance.
insane. this movie trilogy is legendary. there won't be ever again a movie like these. it is like the key to successful movies is hidden in these ones. unbelievable it is still so popular
Viggo is a tough guy in real life. Most actors are not tough guys, but some are, and he's one. Chipped his tooth making LOTR, and wanted to super glue it back together and keep shooting. Broke some toes kicking an ork helmet while filming. The shot was used for the movie. He constantly had scraped up knuckles, cuts, and bruises from the sword fighting, and hand to hand combat scenes, but just kept on going as if was a normal part of the job.
Yeah when he broke his toe kicking the Helmet, that story is legendary to me.. not only because they used the shot.. but because instead of yelling "Cut!" or "F***!" he just stays in his performance and uses it to give out a bellowing cry of grief. If I remember correctly even Peter Jackson was like wow! Where did that come from, that was extraordinary, felt so genuine. They later found out he mangled he foot bad on that helmet, broke at least 1 or 2 toes. That's a legendary Actor.
My uncle was a part of the stunt crew, i've got a picture of him up on my fridge with viggo from that nights party. The welt is there, big time. What they did with these movies will probably never again be repeated, in terms of really making a family. I'm moved every time i speak with my uncle about this.
You aren’t wrong. But to be such an asshole about it regardless? You are just a big a part of the problem. I hope life finds you better than when you posted that original comment. We all need some positivity nowadays.
Viggo was by far and above the perfect Aragorn. I read all the books long before the movie came out and all I could think about was what kind person could they possibly find that would fit the description that Tolkien gave in the books? Someone who was tall and dark but looks as if he could slip into the shadows and hide in plain sight, but someone who is also a fierce warrior and destined to be a king. He has the look of all of these in my opinion, and even performed beautifully to top it all off.
For all those saying they shouldn't have done the Haka. Having the Hakka preformed for you is a massive sign of respect in New Zealand culture. The movies were filmed in New Zealand, shut up about it God.
Msd74lk the haka is a war dance, when they perform it in-front of you that means they consider you a warrior or a person that deserve a respect of one.
No it was meant for intimidation and to rally originally, but they decided to just appropriate it for anything from meeting foreign politicians to opening a new pub.
This is touching, you can really feel that Viggo was sad leaving this role behind, even though he didn't want the part to begin with. He did it for his son, but it was the best thing that could happen to him. Viggo as Aragorn is probably one of the best actor-performances in history, he did an excellent job, and it will be remembered forever :)
Yeah, he is a example of the perfect actor. But the funny part is, that he originally declined the role as Aragorn, but thanks to his son, who thought that it would be really cool, he took the role, and he liked right from the beginning :) Hail you Viggo!
My reason for loving him as an actor is that he cracked his toes in the scene where he kicked the Uru Kai's head, and instead of calling a time out to get treated,he took that physical pain and turned into emotional angst for his character. Talk about taking one for the team! Plus,he's a horse fanatic, and a neo pagan, like myself, lol.
proud2bpagan I remember that he also broke a tooth during casting (a fight scene or falling during a running scene, I don't remember). Also, during the fight against Lurtz, the knife Lurtz throws at Viggo's was actually a real one. Kind of a luck that Viggo stil managed to deviate it with his sword.
I'm not crying. You're crying. 😭What an honor to receive from the Maori! Viggo was my favorite actor in the LOTR series. He embodied Aragorn so well and made you feel whatever he was feeling. As someone stated below, such an underrated actor!
It's obvious why the Lord of the Rings trilogy was so well-made. Each participant, from the lead actors to the stuntmen to the artists and craftsmen was giving their absolute finest collective effort in every aspect of making those movies. The amount of passion and camaraderie was overwhelming.
Viggo is actually one of the few actors I've seen who actually cares about the role he played in a movie. I've seen many actors who play a role JUST for the money and could not give two shits about the role they are playing (ex Harrison Ford in any role he's in). This is why Viggo is awesome. He played one of the best cinematic heroes of all time and has left an impact on cinema goers around the world. I salute you Viggo!
You really think that Harrison Ford is phoning it in? I've watched his movies since Star Wars ep4 and I can't say I ever saw a bad movie except maybe Hollywood Homicide.
LegendaryGamer The thing is, Ford at least TRIES to get into character, with great results. In real life, however, he couldn't care less about the characters he plays.
Dark Jedi I do have to admit he's not fond of his roles. If you ask him about Han or Indy, he's likely to walk away. He's just so damn natural and it's just believable anything he does. Airforce One was awesome just because of him. "Get off my plane" is one of the best lines ever and only Harrison could say it to that effect.
I think he cares about his roles It the only ones he's ever asked about are Star Wars and Indiana Jones. I think over the years he's come to accept that despite whatever else he does he will never be recognized as more than Han and Indie.
A big reason why LoTR is so special, is because behind the scenes the cast and crew were really like one big family. They had huge love and respect for each other, and the various stories about what they got up to are generally touching and sometimes hilarious.
Viggo was immensely well respected by the stunt team (and by the cast and crew in general). It's easy to see why in the various commentary and special features. Everyone who mentions the guy talks about his work ethic, and how eager he was to train and how hard he worked even when he got hurt. There are a few roles in cinema that are irreplaceable; if you had a different actor in the role, it just wouldn't have been as good a movie because the actor IS the character. Robert Downy Junior as Tony Stark. Harrison Ford as Han Solo. Gregory Peck as Atticus Finch. Viggo as Aragorn is, I think, one of those roles.
How do you say Harrison as Han, and not Mark Hamill as Luke? Harrison does feel irreplaceable as Han, even with this young kid playing him new film looking actually really good, Harrison just nailed the role.... but I feel like Mark Hamill is way more irreplaceable, can't see anyone as Luke besides him....I think Kurt Russell would have been arguably just as good as Han.
because so much time has gone by without doing anything else with the character. the image will always be of hamil because that is all that was done. it's to late now to accept anyone else. Bond works because they never held onto a single actor for long. It's worked all this time. Bond can be anyone. Sure some were better than others but there is no DEFINITIVE BOND and there never will be because a pattern was set in people's mind of seeing different actors. It's really hard to see a certain actor do something for so long and just all of a sudden expect someone else to be viewed as an equal performance. As much as I like the idea of marvel getting xmen back and even if they do a more faithful version of wolverine down the road a part of me will always miss Jackman because he was the only one to do it for all this time. It will be hard to accept a new face and personality.
@@batman4452 Fuck Ford as Han, honestly, did that guy even work that hard to play the character? Ford as Indiana yes, but should be Hamill as Luke definitely, worked way harder than Ford, who just wisecracks his way through and didn't even take the films that seriously.
I truly believe no one else could have done the character of Aragorn justice like Viggo did. I'm young enough to have only read the books after the films came out but my dad tells me he never had a clear vision in his head of what Aragorn looked like while he was reading the books as a teenager. Then when the films came out and he saw Viggo bring Aragorn to life, he immediately felt that this was exactly how the character should look and had always looked, even in his subconsciousness. That's kind of a magical effect for an actor to have on you.
I’m always amazed by how he played Aragorn. I love watching him in this role. He couldn’t have been a better Aragorn and no one else would have been able to in my opinion. Thank god Stuart Townsend didn’t work out and Peter decided Viggo was the perfect guy. It took a little convincing by Viggo’s son Henry to get him to take the role. Thanks so much Henry!!
Despite how hugely popular these movies are, I feel they are not as popular as they should be due to the fact that a lot of people don't watch fantasy movies "just because". There are so many people out there (like my friends) who would love these movies and recognize them for the masterpieces that they are if only they would give them a chance. I bought the extended editions each movie and fell in love with the behind the scenes extras. This is how films should be made, the cast and crew actually created a loving bond that made it so difficult to leave New Zealand and move on in their lives. Elijah Wood says that he had a really hard time going back America after spending years with such great people in such a beautiful country.
Exactly. I agree with everything you just said. Especially the part about people who don't watch it "just because." One of the most common reasons I've found is that lots of people like to just go against the tide. Some of my friends thought it was too scary based off of the friggin trailers (I don't know what the hell..... I mean, these are the same people who watch horror films all the time). And others don't like fantasy. They are inherently prejudiced against LOTR because of movies like Twilight, Snow White & the Huntsman, Harry Potter...... what they don't realize is what a masterpiece LOTR is. It blows all of those things out of the water.
+Rand al'Thor Agreed, these movies made up my childhood- I watch the entire extended trilogy in sequence at least twice a year (Usually 7 months apart) and it never gets old- these are more than movies- they're art- they make you feel something- everything about these movies were on point to the already amazing story by tolkien, the cinematography, the costumes, the acting, the high production value of the set pieces and the beautiful screen time of the wilderness of Aotearoa (NZ), and not to mention one of the greatest soundtracks in a movie- and it goes much deeper- the immensely strong friendships that were built in this production is seen on screen and off and its something that wont ever be broken and something we can all relate to- for me these will go down as one of the- if not the greatest movie trilogy's (Or altogether a) movie ever made!
+Rand al'Thor I just gave up entirely on trying to get other people to get into things. There's too much stubborn bullshit in too many people's perceptions that I just don't have the energy to deal with that anymore.
Do it anyways Enlighten people that JRR Tolkien was a master at putting Good against evil and heroic people died to ensure it in a fantastic way. God Bless you Tolkein and thanks!
I seen what he looks like now and it just makes me sad. I remember watching lord of the rings as a kid, now I am 20 and still haven't achieved anything in life really. I don't want to grow old :(
I met him at a local harbour grill in Havnsø, Denmark about two months ago. Looked like a pretty normal dude in his fifties. He ordered ice-cream. I had the pizza. His was the better choice.
cool, does he lives there? i'm from Argentina and two years ago he went to a film festival in my city Mar del Plata, i feel asleept the day of the premiere because it was at 9AM. I regret that with all my heart
That's a legendary Actor.
viggo has a home in North idaho and I knew a few contractors who worked on his home, all say he was a kind, humble man, easy to be around plus he is involved in the local community, from arts to food bank, plus he is a really great fisherman.we love viggo in North idaho
Worth remembering the animated film, nowhere near as good as these films overall, but the Late John Hurt's vocal performance as Aragorn was exceptional.
Mortensen is not only a great actor, he's also a great guy in real life if you read about his political and social point of view. I think that he nailed the role of Aragorn, because in real life , he's an honest man who doesnt know what is arrogance! Thanks Viggo for the great acting!
I'm not sure why his political point of view makes you think better of his character, other than you probably agreeing with him... goes to show what "politics" has become these days.
@@F1rstResponder yeah that comment is so dumb. Somehow having a specific political perspective makes someone objectively a better person? LOL. I can only guess what kind of views he has.....
You guys are right on the politics thing, and I'm not an adult yet so I know only a few things about politics, so my comment may also seem dumb, but what if there is a slight chance that his political views are the most logical ones? I mean, your comments aren't that good either. A _lot_ of political parties and ideologies that are sometimes supported by a good amount of people are totally sh*t. Idk, bye lol
@@Chief_Bill Not a dumb comment. There just isn't really such thing as a "logical" political view. Whether a political view is logical to someone is entirely subjective. The problem is that the original comment implied that Viggo's political views somehow make him an objectively better person, which simply isn't the case. And also, knowing the fact that 99% of celebrities take a leftist/SJW stance when it comes to politics, that comment becomes even more sickening. Leftists today want people to believe that liberalism is the only acceptable political ideology, and anything else is bigoted, racist, etc. That's a really really dangerous and evil premise. Anyways take care bud, hope you find the truth :)
@@jimjohnson6944 No, leftists actually hate true liberalism, what they try to pass as "liberal" today is actually collectivism, just more identity politics in thin disguise, and sometimes, not even in disguise.
The role of Aragorn could have found no better home than Mortensen. I can't think of a single actor that would have fit the role better than him. He has this soft-spoken, quiet authority to him in real life. I think it would have been so easy to make the character overwrought and pretentious, gloomy even, the same way I've seen so many reserved heroes ruined in the past, but Mortensen nailed it. His performance translated perfectly into the character that Tolkien wrote. While Jackson's The Lord of the Rings isn't perfect, it is a damn fine piece of work that captures the narrative force and emotion of the books, and in some ways even surpassing it. The Ride of the Rohirrim will always be the most triumphant moment in cinema I will ever experience. Glad to have lived through it.
He did a great job yes, nailed the character.. but just because you can't see Aragorn played by anyone else... most definitely does not mean someone else couldn't have done an even better job... you just cherish his performance... but to say they chose the BEST person out of the billions on earth, GUARANTEED.. is insane... someone out there would have been better.. we just got Viggo... which again, is a great thing.
I think Viggo is so lucky. I mean, he gets to be Aragorn, and apart of this great world Tolkien made. To be a character that everyone loves and knows, to me is a true privilege.
lael Tvede We all know that Iael, thank you for pointing out that I am just a youtube channel with the name of Frodo. Congrats on realizing i'm not the real frodo, I never knew he wasn't real... You can calm down now.
Aragorn was always my favorite character in the Lord of the rings books. But when I saw the movies I liked him even more. Viggo Mortenson was amazing. We could not have asked for a better Aragorn.
He's the heir of the line of kings that came form Numenor (an island given to the men as a gift from Eru Iluvatar or God for their fight against Melkor the great enemy who was once Saurons master) and those people lived very long lives, up to 300 years. Until the events during the Lord of the Rings only few of them survived and they were called the Dunedain and Aragorn was their commander. He lived 210 years if i remember correctly.
One of the things that must be supremely difficult for actors now is acting in front of a green screen, not enough credit is given to the fact that they have to pretend on top of pretending now.
Actors have been "pretending on top of pretending" for thousands of years. You think they had elaborate sets and props in Shakespeare's day? In the Renaissance? Back in Roman, Greek, Egyptian, etc. times? That's the actor's job
That is only one form of theater. But there has always been theater with no set at all. there is a form of theater in Japan, where the actor is just sitting and has to tell the story just by talking. Thats just one example popping into my mind. I personally prefer nice sets and costumes, but i think a good actor should be able to portray you his character just with his body and voice.
That last scene must have been really hard on him, I know from stage acting that when your done with the play, you've spent time with the actors, other people. Eating, sleeping and reading your roles. The end when everything is said and done, it's not easy never mind for someone like Aragorn.
What I love about this (my favorite behind the scenes bit of the entire Trilogy) is that you can see how Viggo is having one of those timeless moments. The enormity of the event is filling him up, and you can see how awestruck he is by the honor being paid to him by men whom he knows so well and holds in such high esteem. Wonderful. I hope everyone has at least one moment like this in their lives. It lives forever inside you.
On another level, this is New Zealand warrior culture paying honor to the ideal of European Anglo Saxon Catholic Kingship as presented by J.R.R Tolkien, which Viggo masterfully channeled. It goes to show the hero is universal because we are all one human race.
This is my favorite behind-the-scenes EVER. Chills every time. What an honor. What a resplendent moment in time, to know what an impact you had on so many lives.
Man I remember I was 11 when the fellowship of the ring came out. My mom took me and my brother out of school to wait in line at the theatre and it was wrapped around the building! Waited like three hours for the doors to open and I ended up seeing the movie 6 times in theatres lol good times.
That's all an actor could ever want. Awards, money, whatever: The greatest thing you can ever receive is respect from others, especially from a walk of life different from your own. That truly was special.
More movies of lotr pleasee, i watched lotr 500 times and today was all 3 movies on croatian television, im from croatia and im a big big big fan of lotr!
This doesn't surprise me at all. You don't have a screen presence like Viggo did as Aragorn without actually being larger than life. Very cool to watch.
I was 14-16 when these films came out, and I was blown away in theaters. I had never seen anything like these films ever. I don't think anyone had. It was truly a remarkable experience and I still have my ticket stubs. I'm proud of that for sure.
Passionate actors, director and crew. Can be seen throughout the trilogy. A true labour of love. Can watch it over and over due to its attention to detail. A masterpiece. The love is so tangible on set.
Awful day today. Mum is sick, Dad is slowing down, our beagle is about to be put down and wife lost her job but this clip showed me that honor counts and that good men, good people can make a difference. Sad smile but still a smile.
When people see him, tehy dont shout "Its Viggo!", they shout "Its Aragorn!" He really took that role 100%, to the point that all art featuring Aragorn from that point on took his looks, like yeah, thats canon Aragorn look.
Man, I miss these movies! I was so crazy about them when they first came out. I watched every behind-the-scenes thing and commentary I could get my hands on. I hope they make the Silmarillion.
The Silmarillion would end up longer than all three of LotR and the Hobbit movies combined! I do think I'd love to see Carcharoth rip up Middle earth though.
By the time they stopped filming ( 3 years ), Viggo was one of the closest friends to the entire stunt crew. He STILL headbutts them when he sees them.
Viggo did an incredibly nice thing for Stephen Colbert..aka the world's biggest lotr nerd, lol. He was coming on The Daily Show to plug his newest movie, and as Stephen's voice played, naming off Aragorn's history and lineage,Viggo smiled and said he knew what a huge fan Stephen was,so he was sending him a chess set made of chocolate, shaped like the entire cast.
This truly brings tears back to my eyes. Spending these few short years with these wonderful human beings making a legend... Truly the highest point of my +40 years in motion pictures♥
What a man. Incredible actor, speaks multiple languages, does incredible work with the care and preservation of horses, wholly sensitive to other cultures, and also managed to reunite mankind to take down the encroaching evil of an all powerful demon lord… what can’t Viggo do?!
Happy birthday to my most favorite man in the world right now and hopefully for years to come. Though Aragorn has stayed with me for almost 10 years now but it is only 2 months ago that something compelled me to find more about him as a person. And I got all my answers as to why his Aragorn had kept me under spell. Cz he is a wonderful man. Polite, generous, intelligent and above all he has the most honest eyes in the world.
Payal Gupta Yep! Those eyes are enchanting. Whenever he came on screen or was even standind behind my eyes were glued to him. That's how amazing his character was.
I think of all the memories Viggo made during this journey he took making Lord of the Rings and playing Aragorn, this moment is one of many that will stay with him forever. What an honor.
You mean like those guys who did the thing played most of the orcs in all the movies? you mean like those guys who had contact with him? just working 3 years together...No contact at all. Nope the producers and the main cast only show those whos beneth main cast their role is in the corner or being hit by the main casts propswords for 3 years.
Those that are doing the dance for him are the ones who was acting orcs and almost every other haradrim and every other soldier in the movie. so they worked 3 years very close together as they was getting beat on by Aragorn and every other character.
I love this! Mutual respect and love like a family. How rewarding this must have felt for all of the LOTR cast and crew to be able to share this experience.
