A shave with the brand New Emperor Adjustable Safety Razor (Augustus Edition) from Vikings Blade! Available in two finishes!
NOTE: In my excitement in using this razor for the first time (and wanting to get the review posted ASAP), I missed a feature. The razor head is asymmetrical. One side of the razor head is a straight bar while the other side is a sculpted comb. And, it does make for a nice contrast in approaching the shave.:) I had been using the Crusader Adjustable Safety Razor (also with an asymmetrical razor head) all week prior to receiving the Emperor. I must have simply fallen into the pattern of using this type of razor head and simply forgot to mention it. Muscle memory, so to speak?

Thank you for taking the time to put together such an informative and thorough video. You took the time to actually show us the amount of shave cream, the consistency of the shave cream, etc. I'm new to this, having recently dropped "those other razors" and still getting the hang of this type but I can already tell it's much better for my skin. Thanks again for such an awesome review

Love that color scheme. Really very nice. The numbering just pops on that color. A real cool look IMO. I am already familiar with their top notch quality also having their Chieftain razor for some time now. This just looks like one of their real masterpieces. One thing I love also about Vikings Blade is that they don’t kid around with the knurling. I am one of those kind of guys that has to always wet my finger just to turn a page. I can’t tell you how many times the aggressive knurling on the Chieftain saved me from a drop. Great presentation Mark. Always a pleasure to watch.Thank you !

Thank you so very much!:) As I wrote in the description, I was so excited to use this razor and get the review posted, I failed to point out the dual razor head. I had been using Viking blade Crusader for a good week before the Emperor arrived and I guess I just got into the groove of using the dual head automatically. I've already done a couple of other videos (editing these, etc.) and have made sure to point it out. i can say this, the shave at the higher levels was still so smooth! Again, I guess I have muscle memory becasue using this razor and dual head is automatic for me.:) This is, by far my favorite adjustable razor. I've used it many times since recording this video and each shave is just a real pleasure!

I sent away for the Augustus version last week. It arrived today and after shaving with it, I concur with your evaluation. This is a monster razor, but my one complaint is that it's so thick I now have to buy yet another razor stand or container in order to keep it handy for use. I just spent money on a Charmman razor stand to use with the badger brush I ordered from them.
@MarkSzorady
@MarkSzorady 5 лет назад
For me, the Admiral Razor and brush stand works very well with the Emperor razor. It's even tall enough to accommodate the Vulcan long-handle razor or the Merkur Futur. However, thicker handled shaving brushes like my Yaqi 30MM will not fit. But, I'd expect that. You'd need a separate stand for a brush that large. However, there is this stand from Fendrihan: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-zzobXbNgKZU.html I cannot speak to how it performs or it's construction, etc. I've never tried it. Looks like a neat concept. Be that as it may, I'm using Synthetic brushes more and more, even with shaving creams. My experience has been that synthetics dry almost immediately after a gentle wringing and a couple of snappy shakes. My larger synthetic brushes, anymore, I let stand on their own. For example, I used my Yaqi 30mm brush this morning for a face alter with The Art of Shaving's Bergamot and Neroli shaving cream (amzn.to/2Yk970w). After cleaning, the Yaqi brush was 98% dry. I really didn't need to place it on a stand. And I do recall reading a variety of comments on shaving forums whereby some wet shavers do exactly this. They dry their brush and stand it on end, hairs pointing upward. Only time will tell, though, if this method keeps the brush in good shape.

Hello Mr Mark Szorady Finally I got this razor from Amazon. And after my first shaving with my little experiense in wet classic shaving and my sinsitive skin I can to say just this blade very, very and very more times smooth and mild with Eddison razors (made in Israel). No significant cuts or skin irritation. So, I won’t write anything else. Everything is already on the Internet. Positive and negative rewiews. The factory "deffects" and etc. Verdict. In my opinion it's great razor that combines the beauty of brutalism and smooth shaving. My rating is 5+ Thanks

You are the only one who seems to be using and show casing Vikings Blade stuff, at least consistently. I have been trying to find out more about these guys since I ran across their products. Their own web site isn't giving out as much info as I would like and well, we all know marketing speak, so I rather have info and impressions from people who actually use the product, and you seem to really enjoy using them. Disclosure; I own Rockwell's 6S, and was looking for an adjustable and was looking at the usual suspects, Merkur Futur, Progress or the Parker Variant, when I saw this and really liked how it looked. No one else though talks about how this razor performs. I now have mine on the way via Amazon, though I probably won't see it till at least 2 weeks later since it's going half way around the world to where I am.

Steve, thanks for the nice comments.:) I really appreciate it.:) One thing I need to point out that I failed to mention in the video is that Vikings Blade's adjustable razors all have dual heads. One side has a sculpted comb, the other a straight bar. It really adds to the approach of the shave, IMHO.:) I've found, for instance, when I use the Emperor to shave my head, if i get into an area of the scalp that requires me to turn it down a bit, I simply flip the razor head. I also do this when it comes to shaving tender areas on the neck and the top lip. Being fair-skinned, I really appreciate this feature.:) Thanks for the view and comment and I'm happy that you've ordered the Emperor.:) Please let me know how you like it.:)

I just received mine in part due to your review! My only gripe is that as you said, the narrow edges of the blade extend out from the sides. My old razor covered the narrow sides completely. I need to be careful when handling it as I got used to holding my old razor on the sides. You also have to be careful around your nose area as those sides can brush up against the corners of your nose. Also, I see in this video you created a bowl lather.. and in others, you face lather. Do you have a preference? Or have you done a video on the difference between both? Thanks again!

I have been looking at this good looking Razor. I wish it was out before I bought the Chieftain Odin verison as this looks better. (Your video convinced me to buy the Chieftain Odin btw) Thanks You have the Derby Premium blades listed with this. How would you describe the blades Aggressiveness? Like Super Aggressive like Feather, Medium Aggressive like Astra? Or less or more. Also how many shaves would you say the Derby blades last for?
@MarkSzorady
@MarkSzorady 5 лет назад
Thanks for the kind words.:) Derby Premiums are are nowhere near a super aggressive blade like Feather. I'd rate them as a mild, and smooth aggressiveness on par with Astras for sure.:) Astras may be a bit sharper, but the Derby Premiums are in the same ballpark.:) You may also want to try Derby's Concord blades. These are a bit smoother and sharper than the Premiums.:) ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-6o3RYIa7eHw.html

@MarkSzorady
@MarkSzorady 5 лет назад
6:20. It's an alum block made by Osma. An Alum Block is a crystal-like stone. Osma makes theirs by xcutting them form a larger block and machining them down to the size you see. other manufacturers form theirs by compressing a powder/pellets together. The alum block is run under cold water (moistened) and then rubbed over the clean shaven area. It has antiseptic qualities (acts as an antiseptic), knocks down razor burn, razor bumps, and redness. It will also help stop the bleeding of small nicks and cuts. Thanks for the kind words.:) Appreciated.:)

Hi Mark another question for you 😄 how would you compare the emperor vs the crusader? What is the actual difference I've been looking for an adjustable and one of these vikings could be an option thx in advance
@MarkSzorady
@MarkSzorady 4 года назад
Hi, Peter Vernelen. This is always a tough question for me to answer I love them both! Both have the same great razor head. It comes down to length of handle and weight. The Emperor has a thicker handle and more weight, Crusader has a slimmer handle, a little less weight and is a bit longer. I find myself using one and thinking, "This is my favorite" only to use the other and end up thinking the same thing. So, it all comes down to weight and size. I wish I could be more definitive.

Could you mention or tell me the differences in the various viking blades? The Meji, Augustus, and emperor all look the same...
@MarkSzorady
@MarkSzorady 2 года назад
Briefly, the Emperor is rather large, the Meiji is shorter. The Crusader is slimmer and its asymmetrical razor head has a bit of a scalloped comb on one side whereas the Emperor razors' asymmetrical comb one one side are more in the order of being similar to what you would see on a Gillette.

@MarkSzorady
@MarkSzorady 5 лет назад
There are lots of a variables here.:) The Crusader is a terrific razor, but it really is for a shaving enthusiast..someone who wants to feel their way through the shave. Having shaved for a wile, I took to it immediately.:) You may be the same.:) The Augustus is numbered so you'll know exactly where you are. I love the extra heft and thicker handle.:) Built like a tank! Very robut!:) The Odin is the Chieftain with really stellar plating. The Chieftain brought me back to the traditional wet shave and it's still my favorite DE.:) I've used a lot of razors and many are very good. But, there is something about the design of the Chieftain's razor head that sets it apart. Really smooth. The other difference is that the Crusader and Augustus have dual (asymmetrical heads. One side is a bit more aggressive than the other. This enables you to fine tune the shave even more. I love this feature. I use the sculpted comb on my cheek and then flip to the straight bar when doing the neck. For me, it makes a nice difference. But I do, at times, find myself using one side more than the other. Still, when moving to shave the lip or under the nostril, flipping to the straight bar allows for a bit more mild approach, especially if those areas ae sensitive. So, the sense of using a DE where both sides are identical in aggressiveness is lost just a bit. But you gain more control and another level to the adjustment quality of the razor.:) HTH.:)

Mark, the Emperor 2-pass + pickups = BBS with feather blade n clicks 6-4-2... What more to say. Great hefty tool with colossal grip of thick handle. Good the clicks can change with closed head, whilst those vintage Gilettes can only change once doors open. If y think abt a Fatboy, pls take my recommendation: The Fatboy is most sought after, expensive. Do look for the Slim adjustable, its the same razor, the handle slmmer. The Slim's came after the Fatboys n represent the last, better evolution of all adjustables. I own both fat n slim, the slim the btr one, more precise, m u c h cheaper, too. Cheers.

@@achimkohlhage1328 Thanks so much for the great report!:) So happy to hear the razor works for you.:) Yes, the Fatboy is VERY expensive. I do have a couple of Gillette Slims. Hello Mark. I've been interested in this razor for quite a while. The only thing that throws me off is the two different guards. One side is scalloped I believe they call it and the other is smooth. What are your thoughts on this. Do you use one side over the other, do you not notice a difference or is the difference minimal? It seems to be an odd design choice, not bad just different. I'm just concerned that it would essentially be a single edge razor if I wasn't fond of one side. I like big Razors over small which led me to this, and I love the color scheme. To me it looks like a bigger fatboy. Thank you for your time. I'd be interested to here your thoughts.
@MarkSzorady
@MarkSzorady 3 года назад
Roger, the difference from one side to the other is not drastic. When shaving with it, there is a mild step down (or up) which can make a nice difference when shaving over a sensitive area or needing a bit more oomph over a more challenging area. I use it both ways...as a regular safety razor and as a razor that allows me to instantly tune the shave, but just a bit.

Yes. I shaved my head the other day with the Emperor razor and did a video.:) You're the second viewer who asked about head shaving with the Emperor, so I'm posting now.:) Gimme a couple of minutes while I flip the switch.:)

@@MarkSzorady haha how funny. I've never wet shaved before but have been cartridge shaving my head for almost a year. Figured I'd make the switch as I've heard you'd never look back. I ordered the emperor ($56) earlier along with proraso soap ($10), proraso pre shave cream ($13), a cheap brush/stand set ($20) and 100 Derby extra's ($8). Around $100 for everything on Amazon. I was hesitant paying $56 for a razor having never wet shaved before but I can't imagine preferring cartridges after trying!

@@EricdaRED95 the Emperor adjustable is a good choice. Because you can start mild and work your way up from there with each shave.. Just beware of the dual head. remember, use a light touch and let the razor do all the work. The blades you selected are good. I like the derby blades a lot. There are many others out there that I'm sure you'll try and like perhaps even more. Proraso is a terrific shaving soap. You might want to try Tabac, as well. I recommend using an alum block for your post shave. it'll help if you get little Nicks or a bit of irritation when first starting out. However, if you set the Emperor at a mild setting to begin with, you should be fine. You'll find the level and setting which works best for you. Let me know how it goes.

@@MarkSzorady I've had 2 shave with it this far. First with Derby and second with Astra. Both involved cut and irritation. It's definitely an aquired skill! Otherwise I'm optimistic about it.

@@EricdaRED95 Make sure to use a light touch. Dial down to a milder setting. Alos, good shave prep...get a good lather going, etc.:) Give it some time. You'll definitely get there.:)

Mark are you sponsored by Vikings Blade? You use a lot of their products?
@MarkSzorady
@MarkSzorady 5 лет назад
No, I'm not on their payroll.:) It's just that, the Vikings Blade Chieftain was the very first safety razor I used when I came back to the traditional wet shave. It made the transition back to the TWS, for me, exceptionally easy. So, I have a soft spot for the company and their products..) Since that first shave, I turned the TWS experience into a channel in order to find some traffic back to my blog. I'm a cartoonist and the landscape for printed media has changed considerably. So, to keep the channel going, I've acquired a lot of shaving gear...some purchased, some donated by companies and individuals, some gifted (by friends and family). It was all in my pursuit to get traffic/readers/folks to my blog.:) BTW, as of this writing, the cartoon portion of blog is temporarily down. My web host is working on it.:)

Is this still your favorite razor?

@MarkSzorady 4 года назад
Hi, Joah Mossman.:) The original Vikings Blade Chieftain is my favorite razor due to it being the one that brought me back to the traditional wet shave.:) I call it the "Goldilocks razor." Not too aggressive, not too mild, it's just right.:) However their adjustable razors are wonderful!:) I used the Augustus this past week for a couple of shaves and came away with really nice BBS results.:) Hard to compare an adjustable to a standard razor. Both are great and have their strengths.:)

@@MarkSzorady Thank you so much for the quick reply! I've just started shaving with the Godfather a couple weeks ago and love it. I've been trying to decide on a razor to start my father on, what would you recommend? Great video by the way!
@MarkSzorady
@MarkSzorady 4 года назад
@@Joah132 Thanks very much.:) Regarding a razor for your dad, it'll depend on skin type and beard. Again, I love the Chieftain.:) The Chieftain 5 B.C. is even smoother and with more heft.:) eigher one would be great. If going with a 3-piece, the Godfather Stonehenge is a real favorite due to its mild quality. Globalshave.club make some really nice efficient 3-piece razors. the Ice and Steam are ones I use consistently. I favor the Steam a bit more than the Ice. Then, anything from Edwin Jagger. Razor heads are all the same, just decide what kind of handle. Also, is it going to be a gift? The Rockwell 6S would be a good choice, too. Mere;y for the fact that i'll give him the opportunity to try 6 different plates so he can to tune to the right shave for his skin type and beard.:)

@Joah132 4 года назад
@@MarkSzorady Yes it's going to be a gift! My godfather is the Stonehenge one, I love it. Quite honestly switching from cartridge razors, it puts some joy into a shave. My dad has pretty sensitive skin, so I'd assume he'd like a more mild shave. Also, he loves Pinaud Clubman!

Nice review, but I have to comment. I have this razor. It does look cool, I’ll give it that. Otherwise- well, Maybe I just got a bad one, but the adjustment dial has never worked properly. I open the butterfly, adjust the dial, close the razor , and the dial comes loose in seconds, and won’t stay in one place while shaving. I’ve repeatedly done the “resetting” procedure suggested by the manufacturer , but to no avail. The dial pointer is also very hard to see. All of my vintage Gillette adjustables are far superior to this razor. Quality issues aside, I just find this razor too long and heavy for my preference, making for clumsy handling. Very disappointing in every respect. Might be the perfect razor for some, but I don’t recommend it.

Love the excitement and enthusiastic video! Don't really need another DE, but your excitement has me considering trying one! My concern is that the gentleman (or lady) that needs instruction on opening the Vikings Blade box might just not want to venture too far into razor blades. lol
