Masstaden Under Vatten is the greatest metal album I have ever heard. It's like lighting a brilliant torch and being lead deeper and deeper into uncharted caverns. Horrifyingly beautiful. Truly, high art but is more easily consumable. Genius.
Interesting, if you wouldn't mind, please checkout this track: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-ibwFczdmwO0.html In that one track a lot of ideas are present, that have been split into multiple songs on this album. This song for me is the prototype of this album and in my humble opinion, it is THE Vildhjarta song. EDIT: Wrong link
The guy that mixed this one is also the drummer in Vildhjarta and Thrown. Producer for Allt (and many other bands) And then he has his own band Humanitys last breath
If you want this, yet deathcore, Humanity Last Breath is what you need. HLB is one of my favorite bands. They somehow write both hauntingly beautiful, yet disturbingly heavy music, just like Vildhjarta.
@@SteveOGRock His guitar talent is even crazy as well. He plays the guitar upside down. Not like Hendrix who played the guitar upside down but restrung so that the low E is in the correct place, so realistically Jimi's guitar was only aesthetically upside down but functionally right side up. Buster plays the guitar strung so that the low E is where the high E should be, A is where B would be, D is where G should be, and so forth.
I try to think of musicians from the past that I hold in high regard. Mikael Akerfeldt, Danny Carey, Tom Morello, Joe and Mario Duplantier, Thomas Haake, Dani Filth, Nicolas Barker, Shagraz etc etc.........and after listening to every kind of metal for 40 years, I have come to the conclusion that Buster Odeholm smokes every last one that I can think of.
Are you going to check out more Vildhjarta? My favorite band right now and I can't stop listening to "måsstaden under vatten" on repeat. There's nothing else that sounds like them, definitely in a league of their own. I would like to recommend their new singles, + den spanska känslan +, + ylva + and + kristallfågel +. I pretty much ascended when I heard + kristallfågel + lol!
This album has already made its mark on modern metal music, one of the best metal albums ive ever heard from front to back, and masstaden under vaten even tops this in my opinion and pushes the envelope EVEN FURTHER. Love vildhjarta theres nobody like them. THALL.
It's so weird to have two of the greatest metal albums of all time and two of the greatest pieces of music of all time. This and Masstaden Under Vatten are two of the greatest pieces of music I have ever heard (beyond metal, this extends into all genres and some of the greatest art of all humanity, mainly Masstaden Under Vatten). Absolutely breathtaking and may I die listening to this music with my loving metal family. ❤
As insanely technical as this album is, måsstaden under vatten is even more so. It just feels like wherever metal goes, these guys are ahead of the game and on a whole other plane. Great reaction Steve!!
oh I've been waiting for this one! Thanks for doing the whole album, dude. Hope you react to "+ den spanska känslan +" too, one of their latest singles
This and masstaden under vatten are my top 2 favorite albums ever, nothing really scratches that itch in my brain like Vildhjarta does, such an amazing band.
God, this album is so good. I saw them live in the UK with Volumes, Structures and Veil of Maya (sick show) back in 2012 and one thing my friend and I vividly remember is how tight and clockwork Vildhjarta were.
Saw them in the states that same year. They were absolutely in the pocket perfect. I’ll probably never get the chance to see them again so I’m glad I dropped everything to go.
Was supposed to see that show in Russia where I used to live back then. Vildhjarta didn't make it in the end, so I went to Veil of Maya, Volumes and Structures show, which was nice but I really wanted to see Vildhjarta.. Ended up flying to a random small festival in Sweden two years ago to see Vildhjarta live and it really felt like childhood dream coming true
Probably already been mentioned but "Måsstaden" is just like a made up word that no ones really uses what I know of anyway (I'm Swedish lol.) It just means "the town/city of seagulls" pretty much. Mås=Seagull and Staden=Town/City
such a HUGE album. the album following this is p good (album of the decade level) (yes I mean that) (no im not overhyping it im seriously being serious) ( :) )
Now you're gonna have to react to Masstaden Under Vatten ;). For me personally, it is the best album I have ever heard, not even within the metal genre. Genuinely changed the way I look at music.
masstaden under vatten is due for a listen too. this album is excellent but i personally find masstaden under vatten to be an even more intense and enjoyable experience
Man I'm so glad you checked this album out! Super influential record for sure. So many others have said, but their follow up album masstaden under vatten tops this and you should definitely give it a listen once you've absorbed this one a bit more! It's an extremely well thought out composition from front to back and has a more methodical vibe than the chaos of masstaden. One of my top albums of all time, highly recommend the listen!
Not to jump straight into another album after listening to forte, but cool fact: Vildhjarta have a little known album that they never commercially released called Omnislash. Even though it’s their earliest completed work, Omnislash has some of my favorite riff work from this band. Barely anyone has reacted to it so your perspective could be great! (It’s not on Spotify but can be found on RU-vid). Also my favorite track here was dagger, but I should maybe listen to the non-singles on forte as well. Thanks for the vid!
I'm not trying to gatekeep or act elitist~, my personal experience with thall was with humanity's last breath (a more digestable thall band), it was hella groovy and introduced me to some polyrhythmic features in music. words in the wind spoke of this metal band that created this heavy ass mind bending "thall", and the stick broke when I heard drew fortune speak about them, when I discovered Vildhjarta through masstaden under vatten, I couldn't comprehend the album within the first listen, then I slowly clung to the "generic" (for lack of a better term) songs like phantom assassin and passage noir. slowly becoming engrossed by the whole album, which I'm still somewhat learning to today, hearing new things and putting things together in my mind, it became the only thing I listened to everyday for 3 months. That was, being masstaden under vatten I then discovered masstaden forte, and was the first album that has made me cry before, The Lone Deranger's ending was the best thing I've witnessed since my conception, regardless I stuck with that for around 3 months I then tried listening to Thousands of evils (their first album created), and wasn't really into it (not realizing they ALSO remastered that one into a forte), and came back to the forte version just like a month ago, fucking solid album now and almost got the water works flowing again. If you aren't willing to do their other 2 albums, then maybe just try out the following songs from their other albums -Längstmedån (forte) (Thousands of Evils album) -Dimman (forte) (Thousands of Evils album) -Regnar Bensin (forte) (Thousands of Evils album) -Lavender Haze (Masstaden under vatten album) -Detta drömmars sköte (Masstaden under vatten album) -Vagabond (Masstaden under vatten album) I 100% recommend listening to their other albums in whole, and if you however are willing to check them out, I'd say start with Thousands of Evils (forte), it's IMO a lot more groovy (as you've said you liked), and digestable than masstaden under vatten, although I do think masstaden under vatten is a magical journey every metal enjoyer should experience.
what I would give to be able to listen to this album for the first time again. looking forward to the under vatten album if you get to do that one, equally phenomenal, and given how you reviewed this album I think you might like that one even more.
Yeah, I was utterly stunned by how dark and beautiful this album was. Masstaden and Masstaden Under Vatten are some of the greatest music I have ever heard, and definitely the two greatest metal albums ever made (sorry Master of Puppets and Reign In Blood). These albums are up their with the best music I have ever heard including Four Seasons by Vivaldi and Symphony #3 by Beethoven. Breathtaking.
Cool to see you like this masterpiece of an album. Listen a couple of times to it before getting into MUV(their second album) to get all the references!
This album is my absolute all time favorit. Actually the whole album is written as a fable (story where animals act like human characters) and the music accompanies what the characters are currently feeling and saying, much like a theater play or movie soundtrack. That is also why there is no regular song structure found anywhere. Maastaden Under Vatten does the same thing too. And yes there are two vocalists on this album ;)
I love this album and I think it's their magnum opus. Under Vatten is great and better in many terms, but it's just missing some of the groove that made this album so magical
When this came out (the original release, not forte) I'd wake up 1 hour earlier than usual and listen to the whole record, reading along with the lyrics, before going to work. I did that for like 6 months. Really got you that dissociated start to your morning that we all look for.
That was wild. I've been hearing about this band but have never really listened to a lot of their music. That being said, it was a lot to take in, but i enjoyed it.
awesome react! I would like to suggest you to listen to Limbo7, it's a brazilian band that mixture different genres from the brazilian musics into metal.
34:57 so meshuggah tone and eryes 4:51 lol 6:20 tightest headbang on internet 6:30 the frames are so satisfying, i cannot detect if your early or late. so tight so satisfying
So the "Forte" remasters/re-edits of the albums; I think the one for their EP "Thousands of Evils" was very much needed and the Forte remaster really really REALLY helped it out. However I do think that the Forte remaster for this first album "Måsstaden" is actually noticeably worse than what initially released in 2011. Give the original mix a listen some time and I think you'll end up liking it a whole lot more. I think Buster's Forte remaster for "Måsstaden" is the only non-amazing thing he's put out. Everything else he touches is literally gold.
while I think the forte version is still quite good and buster didn't really missed the mark with this one, I also enjoy the original version of this album a bit more
