I had a small reading group at one of the schools I taught at. We were reading about NASA and the first flight to the moon. One of the boys (5th grade) looked up at me and asked, "Did that really happen? Astronauts really went to the moon and walked on it?" Have to admit I was stunned at first. I remember watching the first moon walk in awe. I always remember the event with mixed emotions as that was the night my grandfather died - while he was watching the moon walk at the nursing home. Grandpa, who was from Rono in Sweden, was fascinated with science and, especially, space. I still have his book about space - a children's book put out in the late 50's or early 60's, one of his cherished possessions. So Babu's enthusiasm was touching - Grandpa would have been reacting the same.

@@lyly_lei_lei Absolutely not : the moon is almost not reflective, you can check on Google what is the Moon's albedo. Samples of regolith that have been collected back to Earth are excessively dark. ""it looks like someone put lights on the ground "" Someone tell him that his mind wants to tell him it's night, because the sky is black. But actually, it's daylight. The ground is being illuminated by sunlight as strong as 9-10 AM on Earth and the sky is only black because there is no air to scatter sunlight around.
@stevetheduck1425
@stevetheduck1425 3 года назад
It might be simpler to tell him that the Earth also reflects light (especially from the oceans and clouds), which creates an Earth-light on the moon. It's true that the Sun does much of the heavy lifting, of course.
@joepike1972
@joepike1972 3 года назад
Also it is possible the Astronauts were seeing starts in the sky that the video was not picking up because the light of start light is very dim in comparison to the sunlight reflecting off the moon. The reason they are bouncing on the moon is that it is very difficult to move your body in a pressurized suit. So to maneuver on the moon, you try to make very gentle body movements and take advantage of the low gravity to bounce from place to place. The low gravity means you can move a lot farther horizontally with each jump, than you usually can on Earth. Skipping is a lot easier than walking on the moon.

I never tire of watching that! The reason the moon looks so bright and you’re not blinded when you walk on the surface is because the light is reflected. The photons (particles of light) are spread out - not produced. If anybody says the flag is blowing and there is no wind, it’s because the flag had a vertical AND horizontal poles to support it. The Astronauts rumpled it and won’t move without any external force due to vacuum.

@carultch
@carultch 2 года назад
The pressurized suits were the biggest impediment to their ability to walk. Second to that, was the fact that the suits doubled the mass of the astronaut. Third, the gravity being 1/6th the Earth's gravity, reduces the ability to generate traction. As a result, they needed to make very gentle movements of their bodies, and take advantage of the low gravity to jump from place to place.

The old guy, I love him. He's happy learning new things, and several times he said something like "i didn't know this, I'll go back and pass this knowledge". That's what make us humans, as a whole species, improve, and keep us moving forward. I'm sorry I'm so far away that's practically impossible to meet, have something to eat, drink, and have a nice conversation, learning from his wisdom. If you can, please send him regards and blessings from Argentina. Live long brother.

@Logan Botill there’s a treaty that bans nuclear weapons in space. Space agencies are allowed RTGs (Radioisotope Thermoelectric Generators) for space probes and rovers etc.
@FrankyPi
@FrankyPi 3 года назад
@Logan Botill Apollo had nothing to do with nuclear missiles. The entire space program was originally made for and funded by political purposes, but they beat the Soviets to the Moon with Apollo 8 first, then landing with Apollo 11. The rest of missions, especially J-type missions which were the final three, Apollo 15, 16 and 17 focused much more on the science. Those are the ones where the LRV (the moon buggy) was introduced and used to help aid astronauts in exploring a larger area and carrying tools and rocks. Apollo 17 featured the first civilian astronaut and scientist, geologist Harrison Schmitt. The program was of course already being defunded from 1970 after the completion of Kennedy's goal, so that was it when the last man on the Moon, Gene Cernan, stepped off the surface in 1972 on Apollo 17.

The whole landing (audio only, with subtitles and commentary), prep (audio), EVA (recorded live TV from stationary camera until they moved it to shoot the flag setting up). The getting back in I do not remember, the TV camera may have been off, but have seen it later on DVD by SpaceshipFilms. Later got to see the films shot during the LM extraction, descent, landing, EVA and ascent.

6:46 ... "Soil is looking different at night". It is not Lunar night time, but rather early Lunar morning. ALL Apollo missions landed in the Lunar morning. It is advantageous because of better contrast for photography as well as much "cooler" on the surface than it will be at Lunar Noon and afternoon. Remember that "daylight" last about 14 Earth days (and nights) on the Lunar surface. Surface temperatures were only about 130 F where they landed. Remember that there is no "air" temperature on the Moon.

A little factoid I learned just a few days ago, the fabric over parts of the spacecraft that looks like tin foil is actually a type of teflon designed to prevent the radiation of space from messing with the electronics. The wrinkly look to it is a design to give the fabric some ability to move and stretch without tearing the seams that are just taped together.
