Oh Babu that song was beautiful! Thank you! It must be explained that in Christianity there are many different ‘sects’. Roman Catholics. Orthodox. Protestants to mention just a few. Each, as Babu always tells us, have their own way of celebrating and believing. I am from England originally (I’m retired now and live in northern Portugal with my Scottish husband) and I am a Protestant ..in my church babies only have a little holy water from the font (the big bowl) poured on their foreheads and sometimes have the sign of the cross drawn by the priest or minister on their foreheads too. Mother and Father are usually there, and have chosen what are called Godparents for their baby. Usually friends or family. These godparents in older times made sure the baby was brought up knowing God etc and if the parents died they took the child into their homes. Now they are mainly very important in the baby’s life. It’s a time when the baby is introduced to the church and is sort of ‘joined’ to Christianity and God. We do sometimes have special hymns (religious songs) that we all sing in the church before and after the actual baptism or Christening as we call it! We have a party at home or in a restaurant afterwards! My grandmother belonged to a different type of church that believes in full immersion in the holy water…but is only performed on consenting adults who have decided to join the church. Light clothes are worn and the person walks down steps into a deep ‘box’ of water and while prayers are said they duck under the water! The reason there are three dips, or pouring snow of water is Bevin Christianity we believe in One God but he has three aspects..we think of him as God the Father, God the Son (ie JESUS) and God the Holy Spirit. Each dip or splash of holy water signifies one aspect of God! I hope that helped! I too love to learn about other religions and would love to hear about your religions or if that feels uncomfortable to share, then the main religions that are in India! Namaste 🙏 to you all!

I was raised an Anglican Christian and my siblings and I were baptized when we were babies. Our pastor just gently trickled water down our heads and drew crosses in Holy Water on our foreheads. Not gonna lie, I don't think I could stand having a priest dunk my baby like a dunkaroo into the water like that then having to listen to my baby scream. I realize the baby is not harmed, but that distress is unnecessary. I mean, to each their own so long as no one is harmed, but that is not a practice I'd continue. I assumed that full on dunking was for the teenagers and adults who get to voluntarily choose if they want to be baptized or not.

I was going to say the same thing. I'm Christian Anglican as well, so our practices are more on the side of Catholicism. This looked like a Catholic batism. I've never seen anyone dunk a babies whole head upside down. I notice in Christianity and Catholicism, it also depends on the church and denomination what they do as well. If I'm not mistaken, in Judaism, they dunk the whole baby in a pool almost like an adult baptism. I also wonder if the gentlemen know about God parents? I know a lot of expect them to get a whole history lesson but it is a reaction so it's just a brief look at how things are done.

My family was Protestant. While my mother and step-father weren't really church goers, my grandmother was. In our faith you were not allowed a baptism till you were at least 8 years old because the church considered you innocent of evil to that point (obviously whoever thought this thing out never had kids, right?). You had to understand what was happening, you spent a year prior learning about the religion, why we get baptised, and what is expected once you do. We had a tub built into the stage that the church leaders used where you were dunked full body under water. After that you are allowed to take communion, I started getting trained to be a deacon. When I hit 18 I reunited with my biological father and after a while of going to church with him i was offered to position of deacon. But in all honesty I was pretty agnostic/atheist by then and went mostly to be with my dad and show him support.

I enjoyed hearing about their naming ceremonies too & it’s a nice similarity with the lamps/candles & sacred Ganges to purify. The Christian tradition originated with the Jordan river & Jesus was baptised there by his cousin John (who didn’t feel worthy to do so). Some still go there to be baptised in the actual Jordan (as did my friend’s grandmother, & I believe on her passing she was buried with her special shroud from that day.) This looks Orthodox from the direction they cross themselves & as they immerse the baby but I’ve never seen anyone dunk the baby in upside down, I wasn’t expecting that either. In the Catholic faith the Holy Oil is called chrism, which I think is from the Greek word so it’s possibly the same or similar name in Orthodox. It smells beautiful & has a very ancient tradition. The godparents speak for the baby at this ceremony but later in life on special occasions like Easter you renew your baptismal vows yourself. The concept is about being consecrated to Christ as well as named. The ceremony is called a sacrament, there’s then a few other sacraments which progress with life such as weddings etc in the spiritual journey.

Roman Catholics also almost universally do baptisms via pouring these days (including many Eastern Catholics). The Eastern Catholics who dont do pouring essentially do things the same way the Orthodox do. It's a small font, so an upright full immersion isnt possible here. A quick upside-down immersion is the best way to do it in this case. And babies that small do in fact have a natural response to hold their breath when submerged. Also, babies can just be put in/under water and they’ll naturally swim… until a certain age anyway, then they gotta relearn to swim if they didn’t start early enough

@@Cassxowary But that is in a pool! And babies can’t make a conscious decision to be baptized. Especially given the nature of the Christian god, who is ‘not nice’ (can’t say word that truly describes him because of RU-vid censorship).

This was an Orthodox Christian Baptism. I’ve never seen a Priest dip a baby head first. (I’m Orthodox) It’s this Priests ‘method’. My Priest baptizes gently feet first with seldom a baby crying. It’s just warm water. (The part after is Chrismation… anointing with Holy Oil for the gift of the Holy Spirit). Adults entering the Church are baptized in a large container of water.

I've never seen a baptism like this before and WOW they really just dunk the baby into the water like an Oreo in milk?? That's unreal! I loved Raeen's concerned expression there, I was also feeling some worry for the baby! I think in other types of baptisms they just pour some water over the baby's head.

My church has a naming ceremony for infants but baptism is saved for when a person is capable of understanding good from bad, usually around 8 years old & they have to be completely immersed entirely in the water. We do it that way because we don't believe God would force anyone who hasn't chosen of their own free will, into heaven. We don't think a parent's choice is the same thing as the child's choice. There's quite a bit of variation inside of Christianity.

Very nice video, but there's one thing i'd like to adress, and another thing i'll TRY to explain: The Church You see is really a very modest church, not big or flashy at all. About dipping the childs head 3 times in the water. It's one for the Father, one for the Son, and one for the holy spirit. The Deity in Christianity is comprised by these 3. They are explained like this: The Father is our creator. The son is our savior, and the holy Spirit is what inspires us. I hope this makes a BIT sense

I've never seen it done that way, only water poured, or sprinkled on the head for infant dedication. For adult baptisms, either sprinkling or total immersion. For total immersion, the minister stood in several feet of water. One I attended, our pastor was having an issue with the water burning and got out to make amends with several people or give advice or change advice before continuing.

I think it was a great idea to show them this. There are other Christian churches that do not baptize babies at all. They only baptize those old enough to make the decision to be baptized. It's not forced upon them. Show them a full water baptism where the pastor/priest is in the water with the person and the person is dipped only once. Let the villagers know that just like in their villages with the naming of children, it can be done in different ways and baptism is also done in different ways.

It's dedicating your child to God rather than a naming ceremony. Generally a child is given a name when born. When my son was baptized they sprinkled water on his head, didn't submerge his head in water. Im not sure I'd have been good with that lol. The ceremony happened during regular church time, as part of the service.

As Babu said so eloquently, each to their own customs. Regarding the naming of the child though, at that time, it is more to tell God what the childs name is. Generally, names are chosen before the baby ever arrives. Also, babies know to hold ther breath in water...they just came from such a place, after all. 🤗🙏🏻 xoxo
