A classic book by the master composer/orchestrator Vincent Persichetti finally brought to life.
This process takes quite a while, so the uploads will be spread apart. I still have to notate the other examples.
I did not create these examples nor do I own these examples. This is for educational benefit. Some orchestration liberties were taken.
Hope you enjoyed this! Some more transcriptions and lessons to come.
Here is a rough catalog of examples:
Example 1-01: 0:00
Example 1-02: 0:24
Example 1-03: 0:40
Example 1-04: 0:53
Example 1-05: 1:17

Example 1-07: 1:46
Example 1-08: 2:05
Example 1-09: 2:16

Hi sir, we are the students of Fundemantals of Composition Techniques' class from Hacettepe University, Ankara State Conservatory, Turkey. First of all we want to thank you for the great work that you've done in here, thanks to that we can make our lessons on online platforms during the pandemy time. Secondly, we want to inform you about some mistakes in the examples as a contribution to your great work. We had just finished the first subject in the book and we had found two mistakes. The highest note in the example 1.22 should be G# instead of F# and in the example 1.24 flute and the oboe parts should be replaced by each other. We will continue to our lessons from your videos and we will inform you as we see differences between the book and examples. We hope that we could contribute. Thank you for you great work again. Stay safe.

I've always said the biggest downfall of this book was the lack of the audio CD. You are doing Gods work.

Thank you so much for doing this! It's so helpful to hear the parts with the correct orchestration. I do need to point out an error in Ex. 1-22, the highest note in the book is a G# and not an F# as you've notated it here.

Very nice work. I am a 78 year old musician. I taught myself to read this book when I was in high school, but there was no DAW software at that time and I could not check the examples with a realistic sound. Vincent Persichetti seems to be gaining more recognition these days. I believe that not only classical musicians but also jazz and pop musicians are paying attention to him.

Thanks for the invaluable transcription work. While working on ex. 1-5, I found that Persichetti made a mistake, in the sense that he did not respect the reference he had given in ex. 1-4. Actually, in ex. 1-5 the interval sequence is: perfect octave, perfect fifth, minor sixth, major third, major sixth, minor third, major sixth, minor seventh, etc. But in the reference (ex. 1-4) he had written a different sequence: perfect octave, perfect fifth, perfect fourth, major third, minor sixth, minor third, major sixth, minor seventh, etc.

Can someone explain me the text below ex. 1-19 "Spacing is an inseparable part of...." What it means to place wide intervals at top for ordinary balance and bottom for tautness? Also "Closely spaced harmony crowded with small intervals clears when each chord is broken into a succession of intervals in two part writing.

Is there any chance you could be persuaded to take on Audio Examples of George Russell's 'Lydian Chromatic Concept'? I got it years ago, and I love his music and completely "hear" what's going on intuitvely (and love noodling in Lydian on guitar) but trying to grasp it theoretically from the book has been a tough sled for me. Hearing the audio examples of Persichetti really helps lock it in for me and I'll bet the same would happen for Russell's theory.

Overrated book that confuses taxonomy with analysis. Generally speaking, I think pitch cycle theory is a much more comprehensive way of understanding what is actually happening in most non-serial 20th century classical music (and some serial 20th century.) I'd recommend Twelve Tone Harmony by Perle, The Music of Alban Berg by Dave Headlam, and any book written by Erno Lendvai really. Nonetheless, thank you for this video. There should be more of these sorts of videos on RU-vid.
