Have you ever wondered how to remove rust from metal? Which rust remover works the best? Does vinegar remove rust from metal? In this video I compare three commercial brands of rust removers and vinegar. In this rust removing showdown, I used rusty horseshoes to test the performance of CLR, blaste rust bath, rustoleum rust jelly against household vinegar to see which rust mover works best at removing rust.

Did you expect the outcome I achieved in this video? Let me know which horseshoe you think looked the best! Do you think I should have used a wire wheel to clean them all for the video?

I think your method was excellent, wouldnt introduce any other factors such as the wire wheel, as is, the winner is undeniable. I did not expect this outcome at all! your vdeios are truly top notch Sir. My all time favorite is the garage door insulation

@FurrKnight and this video really opened MY eyes. I was thinking vinegar would do OK but I had no idea. It was going to work so well.. thanks for commenting and thanks for watching!

I was really interested to see how the "others" performed which you clearly show, as I've used winegar earlier to remove rust on a steel plate inside a Commodore Amiga computer and it worked incredibly well. I think the Blaster product is also usable, but at the price it feels kinda dumb. The others seems to have some start of surface rust, compared to the Blaster and winegar which looks completely clean. Great video! 😃❤

Thank you for commenting! I was really intrigued by the results from this test myself. I guess the one good thing about the blaster is that it is reusable. Thanks for watching.!

What about a non soak test.... A spray on where you can't submerge the item????

@@MrFredsDIY Carbomer will help you to create the gel that you desire. You will want to make the EDTA and the Carbomer solutions separately since the acidic Carbomer will gel practically instantly when neutralized by the EDTA. To make a quart try splitting the water into 2 1/2 cups for the EDTA and 1 1/2 cups to dissolve the Carbomer. Use the full amount of EDTA to make the finished quart. The Carbomer is a long polymer that will take a quite awhile to unfold itself properly into the water. Be patient and stir regularly. Think 24+ hours. A high shear mixing stick blender can help the initial dispersion, but time always provides the best results. You won't need much Carbomer to create the gel. Adding a surfactant like Sodium lauryl sulphate (SLS) also helps to remove surface oils that can be barriers to effective contact with the rust remover compounds. Surfactants also help the chelating agent to access and capture the iron ions. The good news is that any common soap will do to provide this compound and other useful associated surfactants. Try to avoid laundry detergent since these contain additives that may not be helpful. Dish soaps are the cleanest. Add this surfactant ingredient to the EDTA solution. Once all of the ingredients are properly dissolved, you will need to combine them. Because Carbomer gels instantly when neutralized, you can't simply pour the 2 solutions together and expect anything but an icky blob disaster that can be unusable. Begin by mixing the EDTA solution with a stick blender. Pour the Carbomer solution into the vortex slowly. Carbomer will not gel initially under the stick blender's high shear mixing conditions. The stick blender's high shear mixing will allow you to form the blend properly before it gels. You will want to check the pH while blending. The pH should be slightly basic. You may need to a a bit of Citric acid, but be very careful. It is better to err on the side of too basic (pH >= 8) since this supports gel stability. Acidic pHs breaks the gel! Slightly basic or even acidic will not foster the conditions where the myth of hydrogen embrittlement can even be mentioned. But basic makes the gel! Note: Hydrogen embrittlement only occurs in specific extreme circumstances and is often associated treatment with strong acids like HCl and electroplating processes. Even the straight Citric acid process does not go there either. It is a good chelating agent, but it isn't close to the strength of EDTA in capturing iron ions from the rust. Note: EDTA itself is a mythical compound that only exists while this molecule is dissolved in water. It's stable form away from water is Tetra Sodium ethylene diamine tetra acetic acid (TsEDTA). The sodium ions combine with the 4 acetic acid groups to neutralize them and allow the compound to form readily water soluble crystals. That's what we buy! The amine groups in the molecule are also basic once dissolved in water.. Note: Carbomer is generally available from web sites that provide hand made soap, cosmetic and toiletry ingredients. There are many chelating agents that exist, but there are only two that are cost effective; EDTA and Citric acid....
