i had a dream somewhat similar to this where joel discovered what a spinosaurus was and watched a video showcasing sounds its been depicted with, and when it got to the jurassic park 3 picture and audio he was uncontrollably laughing and put the video on 0.25x speed, it was actually a lot like the video of bigfoot "speaking" that he showed and i think my brain was subconsciously trying to tell me that liking this creature (which i do) is stupid and i should feel bad

probably also those tv shows that "hunt bigfoot" and aliens. which is not important at all. the mass media appropriation of folklore is the saddest thing to happen to local legends and cultures.

@XXCaptainXFalconXX you take something thats built up over years, in a culture you didnt grow up in, and you make it out like you studied it more than a quick google search, and advertise how john deere atvs and blackout flashlights are helping you catch it, then film it in the day, add a purple or green filter, and say you almost caught the item of folklore.

Knowledge and culture and the freedom to create creative works based upon that are the right of any human being on this planet, as is there right to get paid for what they make. Bad studying just makes u look like a tool though.

@@XXCaptainXFalconXX while true, there are some things that can only be properly explained by the cultures they come up in, and even if you study it extensively as an outsider, you run a major risk in diminishing/harming its reputation. the most obvious is the wendigo and skinwalker. both appropriated at first by people who knew enough about the culture to bring them to international attention, and then given fake, outsider-created lore that conflicts and denigrates the culture it came from. I wont pretend to be the vanguard for these concepts, or others, but when i see shows like "skinwalker ranch" or "hunting the wendigo" and its a history channel/natgeo popcorn series about guys in the woods with guns talking about aliens and bigfoot and vampires... i know that its not only poorly researched, but highly sensationalized. My issue is largely with the lampooning of these ideas for profit. a dry intellectual speaking on what he observed in an empty college theater somewhere isnt appropriation; having an 'expert' on tv with a shotgun is. Edit: i will add, growing up/living in the culture for most of your life is a pretty important aspect of being able to add to it. if you grow up in NYC and move to west virgina for a week, you really shouldnt be adding to mothman lore, because you will likely be infusing NYC ideas in. I think we see this best with big production companies assuming all their characters in the shows need to wear beige and or overalls, crude homeade-looking bling, and have long unkempt hair. they take the LA/NYC idea of what someone in rural america looks like, and makes a caricature of them, then presents them as the expert.

Nah. We haven’t discovered all of American forests yet. Wouldn’t be surprising that an intelligent creature could survive deep within the forests, especially a species that can choose to be found.

Most of them are very minor variants of already existing species too. A lot of fish subspecies are being found, as well as things like snails and frogs. Nothing big and noticeable is left.

To be fair, you’d be surprised how vast and undiscovered much of the woods are, especially in Canada where 90% of the population live on the west or far east coast

Oh for sure we'd have a corpse by now, especially with how hyper-aware and extremely eager everyone is to see a bigfoot. Anyone who actually saw something like that for real while holding a gun would think "this is my big ticket!" I'm convinced that anyone who says something like "I was just too shocked to react!" wasn't even in the woods on the day they say they saw it. I mean there is statistically at least ONE hunter with an itchy enough trigger finger to take a shot at something big, furry and weird in the woods.
