I thought the inscription of Ketils Sword at the end looked vaguely like a familiar word and it seems like it could be an ulfberht sword. Not sure what the significance of it could be but its a cool detail.

Oftentimes I'll hear people saying something along the lines of "slavery in x place at some time wasn't *that* bad." Vinland Saga does its part in dispelling the myth of nice slave owners and tolerable slavery.

I mean, slavery is a bad thing, but it's true that there were very different situations. The slaves who worked in the mines were destined to a very miserable and brief existence, made of extremely hard work in dangerous dark places. They would literally kill themself of fatigue in few years or even months. And still, elsewhere, there were slave owners who treated their slaves with humanity and some respect. Sometimes slaves could get paid and at some point they could buy their freedom. The problem here is more specific and situational. As a slave owner Kjetil may be better than many others, but even a good person gets badly hurt when gets betrayed by the ones he considered close enough to entrust with his naked soul and darkest secrets. And when you get badly hurt, you could react in a very brutal way, even nowadays, with or without slavery. Kjetil was probably a bit too naive to believe Arnheid would sincerely reciprocate his affection, maybe forgetting that she was still his slave, so someone forced to be with him. The point is, even a good person could change his mind and behavior at some point if you give him good enough reasons to do so. Especially if you betray his trust. He would question his metods and decide being kind and respectful was pointless. So if the carrot didn't work properly, maybe it's time to get the stick.
@goclbert
@goclbert Год назад
@@karst1559 Obviously there were different situations and regulations around slavery in various places at various times. But in all cases the master has control over the body of the slave and has the right to enforce that control through violence. The violence and terror are a necessary component of slavery. When Ketil is making sexual advances on Arnheid that threat of violence is strongly implied if not necessarily used. What the character of Ketil demonstrates is that slave owners who did things like allow some slaves to buy their freedom were already incredibly wealthy and could afford this "niceness". But when that wealth is threatened or the slave owner can't easily replace those slaves, the slave owner will be quick to toss that niceness aside. Einar and Thorfinn are replaceable assets but Arnheid is not.
@karst1559
@karst1559 Год назад
@@goclbert I agree, mostly. But "violence and terror as necessary component of slavery" could be sometimes true only as a last resort. In ancient and medieval times the technology was way different than now. Slavery wasn't some kind of sickly hobby for evil weirdos, it was a necessity to manage and maintain a rudimental economic productive system. It means that a slave owner wasn't necessarly a cruel b@stard, but first of all a "manager". I'm sure there were always people who didn't enjoy violence, at least without very good reasons. Sure, some people would use violence and terror to rule, while others would prefer reason, respect, trust and agreements, the kind of "if you help me, I will help you, so we both are going to gain something good from this situation and try to have a better life". I mean, a slave who decides his condition isn't too bad, would still prefer to stay with his owner and have some basic certainties (food, clothes, a bed and, roof) instead of take the risk to flee towards the unknown world around them. After all there were definitely many free people (small farmers, poor citizens...) who lived way more miserable lives than some amongst the slaves. But you're right: slavery is still an awful condition and in any moment and for whatever reason, the owner could just decide to use his rights over his own slaves lives and bodies.

Beating up a woman, even if she's his slave, seems to make any man a villain, it's something that makes everything "black or white" very easy. I see few talk about the manipulative wife, who used the right words to convince the weakened husband, in a panic attack, to attack his slave, which she, the wife, hates so much. It seems clear to me that she intended for Ketil to overdo the beating and kill the poor slave. To put Ketil on the bad team only after this episode is to deny that he was already on the bad team from the beginning, and gained attention for being the least bit kind and avoiding the stereotyped villainous figure. For me, he is an excellent character with enough depth to make you think about different subjects, just like Askelad.

Yeah, Ketil is not a bad man, he treated his slaves with more humanity than most people... It's just that, since he's so kind and nice, Canute took advantage of him and then his wife, and the man was pushed to the very limits, taking it out on Arnheid, but since Snake stopped him, he now wants to take it out on Canute. Poor fucker is just so done he doesn't knows what to do but go on a rampage.

No matter how different words the wife used, it doesn’t matter here, he didn’t like the fact she tried to escape. Just like his farm he views her as his property. This episode broke loose a lot of arguing in the Vinland Saga fandoom. While almost everybody agreed that itś not okay to beat your slave there were many who said you should take Ketils mental state into consideration (him loosing everything and finally snapping). There were also many arguments about what Arnheid did wrong. While I do understand that there are many things leading to this scene and nothing is black and white it´s still not up to debate that beating a human to death is wrong. I too thought in the beginning that Ketil was a good guy because he treated his slaves better than others. But in the end you realize that he only was nice to them because he hated conflict and wouldn’t know how to deal with a slave that doesn’t to as he likes. He is afraid of rejection and of loosing so he chooses the most calm way he knows: manipulations through kindness. And I’d this doesn’t work and he sees his own failures and demise in front of him he snaps. He is not used to argue and doesn’t know anything about conflict management. His tolerance level is actually really low. A teacher would propably say he has low social resilience.

The scene with Arnheid and Ketil. Like I forget when was the last time some scene in any anime made me this angry (my blood was legit boiling) and uncomfortable. This was hard to watch. The way it was directed, the sound design, the music and the voice acting by Arnheid and Ketil's voice actors made this scene tough to witness. And this was pretty realistic (as much I hate to say it) because actual slave owners in our world would in fact do horrible stuff like this. Poor Arnheid 😢. I feel absolutely horrible for her (specially after she lost Gardar in the previous episode). And Ketil turned out to be one of the most horrible anime characters to ever exist. I hate him more then Mr Tucker from Fullmetal Alchemist BH and King Fritz from Attack on Titan (and we all know how horrible those two guys were so Ketil coming on this list is quite an achievement).
@cristalido3640
@cristalido3640 Год назад
Okay, calm the fuck down, fam... Tucker turned his own daughter into a monster for the sake of keeping his status as a state alchemist, Ketil is an honest man that got taken advantage of by Canute and his own wife (who manipulated him into hating Arnheid by using the right words) so he wasn't thinking straight, he was absolutely out of it and taking it out on Arnheid because she betrayed him despite being the person he trusts the most, to the point of telling her that his Iron Fist Ketil reputation is built on a lie. As soon as Snake stops him, he just goes to take it out on Canute by picking his sword and getting ready to fight him... This is clearly a man that has lost it after being screwed over twice.

Poor Ketil and Arnheid. . Arnheid's life is punished because of two bad decisions. 1. Gardar decides to fight for prosperity. 2. Arnheid decides to escape with Gardar. If she had chosen Ketil and told him about the pregnancy, he would have fled with her to start over and she could have had a fresh start with her second child. . Ketil's life is completely turned upside down because of Canute's goal to create a utopia through blood. (Unfortunately justified. In order to approach a just world, blood has been spilled many times in history). He comes home, is haunted by death and is almost on the verge of a mental breakdown and seeks attention from the only person he trusts. His family is a mess. His first son a cold-blooded warrior, his second son a hopeless case and a cold wife (probably a political/arranged marriage) who could not give him any warmth in all these years. He then learns that his second love is trying to abandon him to flee with another man. This was the final stroke to turn him from a lifelong pacifist into "Iron Fist Ketil". After all these events, he makes the terrible decision to take out his anger on Arnheid.

but i am pitied for gardar more than ketil from gardar point of view his action justified it not just about steel if there rival village take the all steel it was also terrified for there village yeah but nobody knows future then this turn out like this. arnheid decide to escape with garder is great choice for me it is stabilize her strong character and love for his husband and in manga she admit or realise all gardar's action is for her and his family's future. where ketil he does not love his wife because she was old and he only punish arnheid (i am not saying to punish thorfin and einar but technically they all are responsible) where he give freedom for einar and thorfin like nothing happened. i don't think he abandoned his whole farm just for arnheid and what he did in this ep yeah he was traumatized but he literally killed arnheid if snake does not stop him then act like he cared her and i was laughed when he said tend her wound me be like; what the hell firstly beat her like animal then tend her wound . and lastly arnheid where to start and where end no word for her only misery and pity.
