Funny thing is that when I originally wishlisted this game on steam it wasn't an anomaly -like but trying to be a full on strand-type game (which is why the main character has a DS-backpack.) I guess the dev saw the money for these types of games and decided to just converted it into an easy cashgrab lol.

The reason Exit 8 worked was because things are so subtle, you could pick up on small changes (and focusing on small changes also made the really big ones like the tidal wave catch you off guard). There's just too much weird stuff going on all the time in this game (are the dancing pedestrians anomalous or are they just doing a normal idle animation?)

I feel like this is the perfect case study of what makes a game a "clone" rather than just a member of the same genre or even just borrowing gameplay systems. Many games have been considered Doom clones because they share the same rendering system, mechanic set, movement feel, and progression, but once games started expanding their mechanics, changing up the setting, experimening with non-linear progression, etc., they made the jump to the "fps genre" instead. This is clearly a case of someone(s) looking at Exit 8 and thinking "how can we make exactly that, but add something to say we're unique," without the stopping to ask "Why was it in a train station? Where else could it be set? Why does it loop, what does that communicate? Why does it matter that the game is in first person?" and most importantly "How far can we take the core concept of 'spot the difference' with our own spin?"
